I got that dowel jig X on your recommendation a few months ago. I’ve used it several times already. As a newbie to this hobby it’s really helped strengthen my joints. Thanks, Matt!
Went to buy the Massca Dowel Jig X, ended up getting that, a clamp, and their pocket hole system on sale for Black Friday. This is perfect for an outdoor picnic table I’m building and some garage cabinets.
I've used that cross-dowel technique for decades. Never had a jig to help line things up though. Great way to add a nice look to your work, but I've always done it just as a way to strengthen the joints. Nice to see someone making a quality metal-body tool to help with the process and I will definitely have to pick up a set.
That dowel jig looks really nice. I have and use that small Suizan saw. One thing that I don't like about it is that their steel rusts very easily. If you use it to flush-cut dowels and you cut the dowels before the glue sets completely, any remaining moisture content from the glue can start to cause the saw to rust after you put it away. If you get this saw, you probably want to wipe it down with some sort of rust inhibitor any time it might come in contact with any moisture. I think even moisture content in wood itself can be enough to cause surface rust. With that said, even though mine has some traces of surface rust on it, it still cuts fine. I think it's good for flush-cutting and also sometimes cutting off small parts. I also use it when I'm cutting notches in wood pieces -- like with half-lap or cross-lap joints, and I want to get nice crisp corners. I'll first cut with a circular saw, but if my cut edges don't meet up perfectly then I'll finish the cut with a small saw like this at he corners. Since this saw is razor-thin with a very fine kerf, you can get really square corners when you finish your cuts with these, and you will have little to no required touch-up with a chisel after you cut.
Bought the fastcap tapes years ago, and they are the only tape measures that have stood with me. Everyone who borrows one loves them and asks where to get them. I also love my flat blade tape, makes measuring super simple on most wood with a flat face! Their glü bot glue bottles are amazing as well
The FastCap Lefty/Righty tape measure is my favorite. You never have to read it from the wrong direction. The same clip that makes it easier to put on your belt is on it also. The flat back tape measure is super for measuring something that isn't flat.
@@rleeingram Yep. That's the difference between having the tape in a tool pouch or hanging on your belt or pocket. For smaller jobs, I don't find a tool pouch to be helpful. Larger jobs, yes.
I love love love my METRIC Fastcap tape measures. I grew up with metric and I’ve had a hell of a time with imperial, so now I just convert and I never make errors. Love the pencil sharpener in it but also love the white circle, great for writing measurements with that sharpened pencil on it, because my mind is a sieve!!!
I’m sure you’ve heard this before but you remind me so much of one of my three all-time favorite UFC fighters, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. His look, his personality, and his humor. Great video. Thanks!
The thing is, I am not a "woodworker." I do not make plaques and I do not make furniture. I am a home improvement guy, and I am only that by default. I bought a distressed foreclosure 13 years ago, and I have spent that much time living in it and bringing it back from the dead. But what are houses made of? That's right, even your brick house had a wooden frame underneath. So all of my tools are the same tools you guys use to build your furniture and picture frames. And this guy right here, he is very helpful. Yeah, he is selling things. But aren't we all? He is selling things in a way that helps me out a LOT! That's the right way to do that!
Love your videos! The lefty/righty FastCap tape measure (the green one) is my go-to. I am right-handed but I use a tape measure the way a left-handed person would, so I was always trying to read upside-down numbers. Many measurements went awry, and a whole bunch of wood was wasted. FastCap lefty/righty was a game-changer for me.
I actually use my pocket hole jig with dowels, I have also used my pocket hole jig to make a French cleat style wall mount but with angled screws instead.
Could you please do a tutorial on the Rockler Router Bit Center Gauge? (I understand the depth portion from the bit recessing into the table... BUT I don't understand the "Centering" portion.)
I’ve been carrying a Fast Cap Lefty-Righty on my left pocket for some years. Never know which end of the board I’m going to be measuring from. Love how 8th and 16th marks are numbered. You forgot to mention that if you don’t slap a sticker on the side, that white disk serves as an erasable note pad to jot down measurements when partner is at the top of the ladder and you left your paper pad back at the saw. Use it every day.
@3:00 Matt, as for making splines... Maybe using the hole in dowel jig with a table saw fence clamp.. ( you know.. those square u-bolts cut in half). Put the bent part in the hole in the jig and figure out how to clamp it on the other end depending on the orientation of the wood. Just an idea.. God bless!
I much prefer a brightly colored tape measure. I have a tape measure dedicated to both the table saw and the miter saw and there are times I have trouble finding them; however, the bright color stands out so easily found!
As a chair-maker by trade, I never liked pocket screws. The dowl-X looks pretty amazing and could open up a lot of possibilities for functional furniture.
If you lay things out right, you can touch or overlap the dowels so the visible ends look like a figure 8. Or use just one side so you get a row of teardrops going down the line.
If you use a regular dowel jig you don't have the dowels exposed. I can't see any application where I would use this worthless jig. I don't see anything amazing about it.
What is the length of the body of the Fastcap tape measure? It used to be easy to find tape measures that were 3 inches long and that made it easy to accurately measure between 2 inside corners using the 3 inch body of the tape to offset the measurement. Now it seems that most are 80mm which doesn't make sense on a fractional tape measure. I realize that we're behind the times here in the States but how hard is it to design a fractional tape measure using fractional units?
Anyone have thoughts on using the Massca Dowel Jig on Langstroth boxes (beehive box) instead of using box joints? I can't use a dado and this would be much easier for me to toss a couple dowels into the sides instead.
On the FastCap tape measure the spot where his sticker went is a writable surface, perfect for jotting down measurements. For my cabinet work, I use the FastCap flat back tape measures. It's a flat blade (no cup like regular tape measures, so measuring and marking on a board is easy and accurate. It's not for inside measurements, as the hook doesn't have the normal slippage found on regular tape measures.
The Rocker Router set up jig is missing the 8 mm shank router bits, which with CNC being so popular, are more and more common now. I'd own one otherwise. I have a Fastcap tape measure that has a center-finding scale built in. Not only is the center-finding feature awesome, it's the only tape measure I have (sadly, not even my Stanley's are this good) that matches my very expensive Starrett measuring tools for accuracy. That is, no matter how far the tape measure is extended, the distance marks match exactly the marks on the Starrett measure. Excellant tool.
Accidentally clicked on this and I'm not a woodmaker but the quality of the video and your explanations are just great. The examples and explanations clearly show you are a great teacher. Thanks for putting this video together and you've got a new subscriber.
My favorite tape measure... Stanley metal case 12 ft. No huge bulky casing you get with longer tapes and over 99% of the neasurements in my shop are under 12 ft. I have them attached to ttols and work areas in a few spots with screw-on earth magnets... under $10 at the Depot.
It's called OmniWall. It's part of a larger system, but they make just the drill holder parts with a small wall organizer th-cam.com/video/hVWSGLYduvw/w-d-xo.html
4:47 You probably already have a V-groove router bit. Put it in your collet and measure from the point to your fence. That's dead center. Then replace it with whatever bit you're using and the center of your cut will be exactly where you marked it.
I just bought a Skilsaw SPT99-11, do you have a video on what I should do first; how to check accuracy, should I build a sled, I know you always complain about the miter Guage they come with, replace the blade, etc...?
My fastcap tape has both SAE/Metric but on the SAE Side it shows the fractions. Comes in very handy for someone who grew up with basically only metric. I’ve had mine for about 3 years, my shop ordered brand new ones for some new guys and I checked the accuracy with the new ones and it’s still perfect after being dropped hundreds of times
I just bought one of these so I can start working in metric. I'm tired of wasting brain power on fractions, plus i can't count fractions on my fingers.
The only problem I've found with flush cut saws is storage. Not the storage itself, but when you do store it, if you're not careful, the teeth get damaged. But no matter how careful you are, if you let someone else use your saw it almost always comes back damaged. I really like your videos. BTW.
Howdy Mr. 731.. I can vouch for that Suizan saw. Bought one about a year ago. I don't use it too too often but mann..mann. When I need it, it's awesome and works great 👍. I like that dowel jig too. Again...using dowels don't happen much in my shop...probably cause they are a pain to do properly, but I'll definitely have to invest in that angled one.
Got me that flush trim saw a couple of years ago when I was building a coffin-shaped bookcase for my daughter. I used pocketholes to join the top and bottom sections together and then plugged the holes. The cheap flush cut saw I had destroyed the surface around the plugs. I upgraded to the Suizan and now I use the cheap saw to cut dowels to length. The other cool feature of the FastCap tape measures is the temporary stop under the tape. Instead of using the push-down stop above the tape to temporarily stop the tape, which can be hard to control (especially compared to my old Stanley's), the one on the bottom is much easier to use. My problem is, I've used the Stanley's for so long, before I got my first FastCap, that I never remember to use the temporary stop underneath. Lol That dowel jig looks like the bee's knees. It's certainly not for every dowelling application, but man, talk about a strong joint.
Man! Can you make a video on a high budget break the bank tool video? Like “if you’re just starting out and money is no object these are all the tools you’ll need to do just about anything”. That would be a super fun video!
I’ve been using a Dewalt flush trim saw for a couple months now and I hate it. It tends to jump around on me because it’s a little to flexible, and I’m tired of patching up my fingers because of it. I’ll be getting that saw you showed and see how it works out. Thanks for the recommendation blue brother. 👊
Danger! 😅 I bought the first 3 items before I could get to the 4th tool on the list in this video. I’m afraid to watch the rest. 😅 Somehow it led me getting into Magswitch featherboards and fences. I have no drill press fence, no left-of-blade miter slot on Ryobi TS, and plastic HF router table fence. This video was dangerous to my wallet. But thanks a bunch!
Someday we will hopefully see some woodworking on a regular & consistent basis like it used to be. Algorithm or not, that's what brought me here & had me. Haven't enjoyed what used to be in a very long time. These types of videos are a dime a dozen now, everywhere on YT unfortunately.
Understandable. I make content for a living. People watch these videos 10x more than anything else so you're in the minority. I watch the data and see what works and what doesn't. Dime a dozen or not, these are what people want to see.
Interested in the tshirt. I found a site that sells a shirt like that but it misquotes and says “Put the full armor…”, leaving out the word “on”. Link maybe? Thanks for sharing your talent and Jesus with the masses. You rock bro!

My problem is, I've used the Stanley's for so long, before I got my first FastCap, that I never remember to use the temporary stop underneath. Lol
That dowel jig looks like the bee's knees. It's certainly not for every dowelling application, but man, talk about a strong joint.
I will check out the Massca Dowel Jig X. Where did you get your "tool wall"?
Video on the tool wall here th-cam.com/video/hVWSGLYduvw/w-d-xo.html
Man! Can you make a video on a high budget break the bank tool video? Like “if you’re just starting out and money is no object these are all the tools you’ll need to do just about anything”. That would be a super fun video!
On the stanly tapes the rubber can remove pencil marks. I bet those you showed would do the same.
The link the the Rockler router jig doesn’t seem to work. Do you have a new one? Thanks!!
Found it on Rocklers website - not sure why it doesn’t appear on Amazon (your link) anymore.
Wow think this is the video I have seen with the green door open lol .... Going to put that dowel jig on my wish list
That massca dowel jig is pretty dang cool!
And yesss those tape measures are the end all be all in my opinion so dang handy!
Cool idea 💡( dowel jig)
Love the video and love the shirt!
I saw one useful tool thanks
Another great video ...
couple great tool ideas ,keep the vids coming, always enjoy them . Thankx
Love that dowel guide by Massca. Thanks for the video.
You bet!
@@731Woodworks I don't see it on the link provided.
@@mikehuber6005 I'm not sure what's going on. I just checked it again and it goes directly to the Dowel jig page.
That X dowel jig is cool - Massca increase your presence in Canada please :)
I cant find it on amazon.
Nice Rogue Deep Dish plates! That is one expensive weight tree!!!
I want that dowel jig.
Love your channel! Been watching a lot a leaning just as much. Do you have a video that helps identify different types of wood and their applications?
thanks. Sorry, I don't have a video on that yet.
But thanks a bunch!
lol 👊🏻
Anyone using a router table a lot needs to look at the Incra LS Positioner.
What are the two holes through the sides of the tool? Even the video by the man who developed the tool doesn't say anything about them.
I’m waiting for you to show me a Festool Domino for under $30! 😂😂😂
😂😂
I would have loved to get the Massca Dowel Jig X, but the postage to Australia is about twice the price of the unit.
Interested in the tshirt. I found a site that sells a shirt like that but it misquotes and says “Put the full armor…”, leaving out the word “on”. Link maybe? Thanks for sharing your talent and Jesus with the masses. You rock bro!
