That hull is already gorgeous, gotta love those Bristol cutter curves, well done. I wish you the best for the continuation, I know how long its gonna take you before getting it wet but I'm not telling you! Lol. Patience, hard work and money, then some more money and oh did I said it? more money Lol
Haha yes it takes a lot of all those things and lots of money indeed. We just keep working away, earning money and spending it faster. We love the Bristol cutters and hope our boat will look as glorious as those when she's finished.
Gartside has such a great eye for a lovely line. If you are going to spend all that time, effort and money you may as well build something beautiful. The late Philip Bolger, who designed many quick and dirty boats of simple shape aimed at money, talent and time limited amateur boatbuilders, cautioned prospective builders that a simple, easy to build shape, such as a flat bottomed sharpie, saves time only in the building of the hull underbody. Everything else (deck, interior, rig) takes the same amount of time and costs the same whether the boat is a crude shape or an elegant one. Judging from what you've done so far, I'd say you are making a boat that will outlast you, which is a good thing. Kudos!
Hi Henry, thank you for your comment! We agree with you all the way. We are affectionately cursing the beautiful shape of our boat at the moment as we just started to lay the second layer of planking against the hull. Those beautiful lines and curves make it a bit tricky sometimes but goodness it looks good. And you are so right with Philip Bolger's quote. We always told ourselves, the hull is not much more than a third of the overal work so saving time there is not really worth it in the end. We love admiring her lovely curves and wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you for the words of encouragement!
"Good on you!" This was what kept rolling through my mind listening to all of your explanations in your intro! You are both CLEARLY clued up and have actually done so much of the necessary 'homework',... before making a start and in my opinion your approaches to this whole huge project are spot on correct! Btw I just noticed your channel through seeing 'Smithy's' interview, who I also had not known of before. This is awesome. Bristol Pilot cutters are my favorite style of boat. It may be because I'm from Bristol and I did my Day Skipper course on a pilot cutter. I'd love to see regular updates!!
Huge undertaking, that is a huge job for 2, especially since you were complete newbies at the start. When I see people like this it makes me realize how humanity has achieved so much, how we've gone from spear chucking rock apes to the moon, it's people like this with an idea and the front to have a go. I've just found your channel and am starting at the beginning - your boat looks beautiful, and I'm looking forward to following along. It touches me just that bit more as I lived in Bristol for 20 yrs until 2019 - a unique place, for sure, and I used to love my walk into town through the boatyards. A really inspiring aspect of your situation is that you're both out at work 3 days a week to fund everything - it's somehow more relatable, and encouraging as I pursue my own projects whilst also working part-time. Enjoy yourselves :)
Tasmania, wow, I am sorry I thought you were in New Zealand. No worries! I am terribly excited about your build in that cold molded builds are from that ancients and in America there are only a few places were folks strive to duplicate such fine workmanship. I am eager to witness your build.
I cannot wait to see the next VideoIf I ever get the opportunity to build my own boat this is the construction method I would choose. I'm a carpenter by trade and find this very interesting.
Just found your channel I have been watching Leo and three other boat building and restoration projects I don’t know why TH-cam didn’t recommend your channel you would think they would have, but anyway watch your last 5 videos decide to watch from the beginning
Just looking at her profile, you know she's going to be gorgeous! So glad that you decided to log the progress on TH-cam, and just from watching your intro, I knew I'd be subbing - looking forward to seeing the progress. Well done!
Just watched y’all’s video and I immediately knew it was something I would enjoy watching more of. Please, if possible record more of your work/progress. I’m sure once others find your channel they too will enjoy it. Just from what of seen she’s beautiful, y’all are doing amazing work, especially for someone who has never built a boat. I’m so happy y’all’s channel came up. Thank you for sharing and God’s speed.
Oh that's so kind of you to say! Thank you for that lovely comment. We're working hard and hoping to show another episode soon! Thanks again for your words of encouragement, very much appreciated!
I think you two are completely off your rockers, my kind of people. People that aren't afraid of taking chances. I like pilot cutters one of my favorite boats, the only thing that bothers me about what I've heard so far is that you didn't start this channel from the get go. Looking forward to binge watching these videos till I catch up! to wherever you are right now. cheers.
Hi Matt and Iefke, So excited to hear your boat is designed by Paul Gartside. I meet Paul at the Wooden Boat School while taking his Yacht Design class. Since then we have become good friends. He is an amazingly gentle and knowledgeable person. He sure draws beautiful boats. Is you boat the "40ft Pilot Cutter, Design #217"? My next build is going to be a Gartside launch, Design #125. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Bob
Hey Bob, yes she is design #217, with a few differences to the original design. We have kept tanks engine etc in the same place but the rest of the below decks has been re designed by us and obviously above deck with a smaller cabin and wider side decks. We find it more important to have a clear open deck that is safe. So nice to see the progress of the boat! I think it amazing what you are doing and it is very impressive! Good luck with the next steps and I'm looking forward to the next video 😁
Very excited to see your progress. I would say good luck but you two have such a great attitude and you are great on camera, I am sure you will be successful.
Good on you! (I'm not from Oz/NZ/TAz, but thought I try the language!) Now that Arabella is afloat, I need a new boat project. Have you seen KnotFINNishedyet, and Tally Ho?
Wow. A pilot cutter. I myself am a sailor in Friesland in the Netherlands. I sail a Cornish Crabber. I wish you all the best and I am looking forward for the next video. Is Iefke Frysian?. Greetings from Leeuwarden
Hi @whobers! Thank you for all of your nice comments on our videos. We try and publish a video every two weeks. So this weekend we should be putting a new one out for you. I'm so glad to hear you like our boat, I am from the Netherlands and have roots in Friesland. We lived in the Netherlands for a while and we loved watching the boats. Cornish Crabber are such nice boats!
Thank you for sharing. Few would dare venture to build a boat from scratch. She is lovely as Bristol Cutters are. What kind of timber are you using? Native wood from Tasmania?
Thank you Joseph, we also sometimes think we must be crazy but luckily we're still having loads of fun with it! We have only used native timbers for our build. All the wood is Australian hardwood. Mostly Tasmanian oak!
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Thank you. I love Tasmania. Been there once as a young man in the 90s. Good luck and have a wonderful and safe adventure sailing a boat of your dream. Cheers.
Oh well a few factors, Tas oak loves glue! It takes the epoxy well. We could not afford any other specialty timbers and tas oak is widely available for a good price. It bent and twisted quite well so overall we are happy, only down side some would think is it’s a touch heavy..
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River As a fellow Australian and a Gartside admirer too, I'm interested in your build. If Tasmanian Oak takes glue well, then the argument against hard woods doesn't really apply. Are you going to glass the outside of the hull too? One more question please if you don't mind. Paul's 40 foot Bristol Chanel Cutter was drawn with a Gaff Rig. Did Paul make the conversion to Bermudian Rig for you or did you hire a Naval Architect to do the conversion instead? I only ask because I have a dream to build a Bermudan Rigged Hannah II (design 199 I think) right here in Australia.
Ah yep we will do a couple layers of fibreglass! Next episode we start fairing the planking. Not too bad with a belt sander haha Yeah we had Paul draw up a Bermudan rig option, he wasn’t very keen on it though, wanted us to go schooner or ketchup but we like the Bermudan rig.
Where are you 2 from?? Her accent is much heavier than yours.. until I saw what happened down in Australia and the surrounding areas during cvd lockdowns i always swore that the only place i would give up my American citizenship for was either Australia. New Zealand and surrounding areas. Seems like Americans and people from down there have alot in common with the way they view the world etc
Like another of your viewers I found you by accident (no U Tube recommendation), I am often down that way and if at times you need some additional hands, just let me know,

Right, I'm in. I've a bit of catching up to do.
Nice one Mike! Welcome to the Boat by the River crew!
I'm really liking watching this project, thank you
Glad you enjoy it! We see your binging your way up slowly haha
looking forward to following your journey... Cheers - Doug
Thanks Doug, glad your following! Enjoy
Legends!!
Friend!! ♥️
I’m in to watch, from Melbourne
Oh yay! Another Australian! Cheers
Good on you! (I'm not from Oz/NZ/TAz, but thought I try the language!) Now that Arabella is afloat, I need a new boat project. Have you seen KnotFINNishedyet, and Tally Ho?
Yes we know of them, good channels. Glad you’ve found yourself another channel to stay entertained!
Cheers.
❤️ Amazing project, amazing progress, I’m very lucky to witness this ❤️
Ahw thank you Junn ♥️
How did I only just find this channel🙌
TH-cam algorithms work in mysterious ways but we are happy you did find us! And very glad you like our project!
Cool bravo
Thank you!
Is there anything more entrancing than a strong, leggy, blond, woman opening the door to the future of boatness? Keep on truckin' ya"ll!
Incredible. Pitty you didn´t film from beginning. I wish you good luck.
Yeah… it was all rather daunting at the beginning and didn’t feel comfortable putting ourselves out there until we were confident! Haha
Hi there Matt that engine box , will the engine get two hot in there
Hey, no hopefully not, we are planning on two ventilation entry’s so we can push and revive hot air easily. Atleast that’s the plan!
Nice.
Thanks James!
I thought hard woods were I'll suited to cold molding.
No criticism implied, I'm curious. Why did you pick Tasmanian Oak?
Sorry I meant "ill suited'.
Not too bad with a belt sander haha
Yeah we had Paul draw up a Bermudan rig option, he wasn’t very keen on it though, wanted us to go schooner or ketchup but we like the Bermudan rig.
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River I've noticed that in the past, Paul seems particularly attached to traditional rigs.
The algorithm has served me well.
Hahaha fantastic to hear! Cheers
Once you know the backstory this work becomes all the more heroic.
Thank you! So happy you enjoyed watching our story!
Noticed quite a few VW buses, they're worth a lot of money in the US!!!!
And also in the country of origin - Germany!
Are you planning on having patreons?
Hi Henry, we haven't thought about patreons to be honest. Thank you for bringing it up. Do you have any thoughts about it?
Where are you 2 from?? Her accent is much heavier than yours.. until I saw what happened down in Australia and the surrounding areas during cvd lockdowns i always swore that the only place i would give up my American citizenship for was either Australia. New Zealand and surrounding areas. Seems like Americans and people from down there have alot in common with the way they view the world etc
Like another of your viewers I found you by accident (no U Tube recommendation), I am often down that way and if at times you need some additional hands, just let me know,
Oh man why is TH-cam so mean!! Ah well, we are glad you found us and thanks!
Nice project looking good keep going lots of videos check out acorn to Arabella and Sampson boat company their other project TH-camrs I think you guys would fit right in that mold
Hi Sean, thank you for your comment! We watch those channels loyally, such amazing work being done by all those guys! We're not sure our videos will be of the same high quality but we will give it a good try!
