- Klein agreed with Freud’s psychodynamic structure of the mother-child relationship.
But she theorized that it actually began much earlier in infancy or the first few months of life as opposed to later in life as Freud posited.
Freud proposed that the “object” or mother was mainly used to satisfy drives of hunger and survival. But Klein disbarred. She felt that the object was used to form relations that would eventually help the child form relationships in adult life.
Klein coined the term Phantasy as the unconscious and psychic activities related to the inner world of the infant.
According to Klein, infants have “a priori” images of body parts of their mother and themselves. This could explain how a newborn baby with no knowledge of the outside world is able to automatically latch onto the mother’s breast for feeding
Perhaps, Klein’s biggest contribution to object relations theory was the aspect of the splitting of the object and the self into good parts and bad parts

I didn't understand this topic from my teacher's slides but this video helped me so much. Thank you.
Same for me! I feel like I always struggled in school unless practical. Theory online though through TH-cam and self research has helped so much more
Sigmund Freud proposed that the foundational mother-child relationship develops during the oral stage, which occurs roughly from birth to around 18 months of age.
Melanie Klein, also focused on early childhood development and believed that the mother-child relationship begins in the first few months of life, emphasizing the importance of the first year.
