And I like to not be distracted by my phone when I'm filming, and not always killing my phone battery. It's nice having a stand alone camera. Having both would be nice.
I've been using Sony ZV-1 for about 2 years now. I love the result so much from ZV-1 and it's half the price of the newest iPhone back then. However, many times security would forbid me to record with this camera (but it's ok with phone camera).

I was pretty shocked that the camera ended up as the example with completely blown highlights. Like 5-10 years ago this would be completely impossible for a phone! Regardless of what you prefer, it’s undeniable how incredible mobile photography/videography is in 2023.
@@user-wb1ox8jm8oit’s not that people don’t see the difference. It’s just that for some, the difference is not enough to justify owning a second dedicated device.
Smartphones look like they are competing until you start throwing challenging conditions at them, then they quickly fall apart. The worst thing about them is the sharpening and the harsh over processed look, as mentioned at 5:08. It's an instant give away. Then it's HDR and the ashy contrast. I would rather take light clipping but with better colours and better exposed focus subject than alien, ashy looking overall image. For photos, they cannot reproduce artificial light as softly and nicely as dedicated cameras because they stack images with HDR. Cannot match a dedicated camera's 3D pop and soft bokeh because of the lens limitations. Finally, smartphone videos always look harsh in bright sun light because they don't have variable apertures so they have to compensate by increasing the shutter speed to such high speeds that video becomes choppy looking. Stabilization and convenience is much superior on smartphones.
I’m only a very small (very part-time) content creator, but I’ve gotten almost 500 subs in the past 6 months just using my iPhone 14 pro max. I spent 3 years on a dedicated interchangeable lens camera and got 100 subs. The one thing that gets me in trouble with the iPhone is trying to shoot a specific object beyond 3x zoom, like a duck in the middle of the pond. I just notice the quality breaks down too significantly.
Okay just gotta say I got the zv1 ii precisely because I want my video creation workflow separate from my iPhone! And also I don’t want to keep setting up my phone at my desk all the time whenever I wanted to record!! Thank you for your video!!
The ZV1's images are SUBSTANTIALLY better than the iPhone at zoomed ranges where you wouldn't want to take a crappy zoomed image from your tiny iPhone lens. I use them both!
Great comparison. I recently bought a (used $530) ZV-1 after shooting a bunch of test footage with my iPhone as part of my process on whether or not to get the ZV-1. I chose the ZV-1 because I actually had it before and was quite content with its abilities for what it was. The iPhone still has a digital look no matter how much I play with it. The ZV-1 still has real bokeh as opposed to the cheesy fake bokeh in the "cinematic" mode of the iPhone. I say cheesy because I've seen many videos where the in-focus background will still randomly creep in along the edge of the subject during a shot. If you recall Apple's own demo video of the "Cinematic" mode, the subjects were not moving around a lot, which helped reduce any chance of breaking the fake bokeh. Part of what also made me return to the ZV-1, as a b-cam, was that I know I can use it for shots that don't require a lot of color grading, as well as for my TH-cam review videos. Love your content. Cheers.
I also share the same opinion about this, no matter how much I tried to configure my phone, it still got that "digital sharpness" look, even pro mode and other stuff, then I just got the ZV1 and never had this issue before, but honestly nowadays its not very necessary to be honest, most people are watching social media on their phones, so we can at least save a bit of money haha
That was true until 2 weeks ago when Apple released the new iPhone 15 Pros. The new ProRes 10Bit Log settings make the iPhone footages much more cinematic. It gets rid of that annoying over sharpening look. You can also use third party apps to get real RAW photos that look much more like a real camera. I’m a ZV-1 and iPhone 14 Pro owner and I feel like Sony missed a huge opportunity when they released this ZV-1 II with pretty much the same specs. Had they released 4K 60, better stabilization and 10bit codec, it’d be an easy choice.
great review, the iPhone nearly looks too HDR and over-sharpened 😅 I use it for sat nav, so kinda need a separate driving camera anyways - looking forward to getting my zv1 mk2
I thought the one on the right was a much better camera when the camera names weren't given. Interesting that this is a phone. But sony will probably perform better in a dark environment, for example when taking street photos at night.
Even though Sony is the best camera manufacturer out there with top-tier autofocus, low-light performance and tons of relevant AI features, ZV-1 II is not worth it. I would say they should just cancel that line. ZV-E10, however, is still an excellent choice because the sensor-size is significantly larger than any phone will be able to match, real bokeh is easier to obtain, you can get much better lens, add filters and truly start getting the semi-pro experience. What Sony needs to do is hurry up and release an APSC camera that does 4k 60fps for reasonable price then they’ll have another hit on their hands!
Or make that line better than they have done it, really bad it dosn´t even have 4K 50p in Europe. I have the original ZV1, and at my holiday i used my Samsung S22 Ultra more to making video because the ZV1 stabilization is very bad years after Canon. and only 4K 25p in Europe make it not smoth when you walking around and filming. And the ZV1 have not the best colors straight out of box when making videos, should even improve here to.
Didn't mention the most important thing to me. Transferring the video file to a SSD card or other device (for video editing, etc.). Iphone takes a lot of time to transfer either by uploading to the cloud or transferring to SSD.
Apple wants you to use airdrop. Keep you for using iPad or Mac Os. Biggest problem is when your video file over size, the file even can't be found on your PC. It take me a month to find out how to fix the issue.
Great video. However, I'm not that impressed with the Sony ZV1 Mark 2. The only reason you should get the Sony ZV is to separate it from the iPhone camera roll.
Hard not too cheat…but I preferred the right most often. I’m guessing it is the iPhone, but hope it is the Sony. Updated: I was correct 😢. One point to emphasize for either is their portability. IMO not having to lug camera gear when out for a hike or in an event is huge unless you are their to do,some professional work…which 99% of people don’t do. And social media like TH-cam is very forgiving when it comes to image quality. I’ve seen studio video done with the ZV 1 II vs an A7s3 and could not really see any appreciable difference, though some of that may be great editing.
That is definitely on a per camera basis and depends on your use case. Not being able to see yourself without accessories can be more of a pain to frame yourself and I often found personal mics on iphone have been finicky. I would argue gh6, x-s10 or some older flagship cameras are better value unless you need the smallest possible camera. For smaller sensors, the image quality is usually worse and since smartphones usually have better processing it makes sense until you start using larger sensors that have less compromise.

Hi ! Thanks so much for this very informative video, would you add any further information / change your opinions for people considering using the ZV1 for instagram shorts or tik toks? I am leaning towards the iPhone more as it looks like it’s a lot easier for editing, thanks very much!
The blur can be adjusted in cinematic mode to reduce the artifacts around the edges. Try it, you'll be surprised. F8 to F7.1 seems to be the sweet spot.
Totally! I’ve messed with that a bit but by the time you’re at f8 or so, you definitely aren’t getting that same shallow depth of field you may have been looking for. Very cool that you can adjust it after the fact though!
@@dunnadidit Yeah, I've been using some 3rd party apps that apply the background blur better than the apple version. It's getting harder & harder to justify buying cameras. The real competition for this camera will be the iPhone 15s in a few months... which will likely be even more amazing.
This was such a great video! I wanted it to be a SLAM-DUNK in favor of the ZV-1. Somehow, I was sure I knew which camera produced which pictures, but I was wrong. My ZS100 has a good zoom and much stronger flash, and I absolutely hate the iPhone / iCloud / iPhoto workflow. For that reason I greatly prefer shooting with my ZS100 with SD card while on vacation. The iPhone flattens the mountains with its wide-angle lens which takes away your chance to brag about your big beautiful mountains. I'd like to see such a comparison with a compact APS-C camera. Does the choice become clearer? Is it worth the upgrade from the ZS100 and do I still get a good zoom...?
I agree with you, vacation and special events i use my Panasonic DMC-TS5. Takes much better pictures, they look "real" and i have better zoom and when i take the picture and look back at it, i can zoom in and see the detail much more crisp where as my phone, as i zoom in, it gets blurry. Today 99% are using their phone as their primary picture and video which is sad to me, i rather use my point and shoot, i may look out of place and people look at me and im like, well at least im not part of the collective where all you idiots are using your phone, im using a real camera that takes real pictures 😂
I almost instantly recognized which one is which especially during the window scene. The dynamic range, zoomed image clarity and skin tone are the biggest differences.
As a Sony camera user, I could tell you straight away which one was the Sony and which the iPhone. Doesn't say anything about the quality, but it looks like I have an eye for... ;)
The iPhone doesn’t have a 50mm f1.8 tho… nor 70mm f1.8 with a 1 inch sensor. I’m gonna make a TH-cam video after buying this camera competing iPhone 15 Pro Max with it for both stills and street photography.
Excellent video. You forgot the flippy screen lets you shoot with the Sony using the same sensor vs. selfie video using the front facing camera sensor on the iPhone. Wish you had compared the front facing camera on the iPhone and the ZV1M2.
I'd guess left is Sony and right is iPhone. There were burnt out highlihts on the left and shadows were brighter on the right. And the right one generally looked like it had wider dynamic range indoors which I assume is from the iPhone achieved by software.
I have the 7R3 but downloading pictures to FB for example takes too long. So I have now iPhone 13pro. It’s so easy Downloading to FB for one. Sharing pictures is easy & fun. Very happy with it.
I would say that the video from the left side is from the Sony camera. I don't know! Maybe I'm wrong! But the stabilization gave me the answer! A freaking phone has better stabilization compared to a dedicated camera for content creators. The camera is better overall but not when it comes to stabilization. The phone gives you better stabilization so that you don't need a gimbal for normal vlogs. :))
@@dunnadidit but Canon had have much better stabilization than sony for years now, even a 4-5 years old Canon have better stabilization than the ZV1. I have the original ZV1, and it disappointed me because it should be better and have better colors. When comes to photos my old RX100 mk3 feels more stable when comes to results, but the ZV1 have better low light preformance. For me stabilization is very important, because i will never buy a gimbal. And just for that reason i use my Samsung S22 Ultra much more on my holiday when i did video only because the stabilization.
Great review. Thanks for comparison footage! I think that iPhone did better indoor, but oudoor Sony won it for sure. As someone who films drawing processes indoor I would love to have iPhone 14 pro then (+ ability ability to edit simple videos right away on it)
Nothing can replace a good lens. You can't magically make more light come into the lens without a wider aperture. I own a lot of mirrorless cameras, and I'm looking at the ZV-1 ii for the 18mm at the wide end, but it's still not wide enough. My 17-28mm f/2.8 Tamron lens better, but that cost as much as the ZV-1.
I crack up at how camera pros say video "appears over processed" when the "nooks and crannies" in their faces actually show how old they are! Hilarious!
I dropped My sony zv-1 at floor and broke the msin board..instead to pay $400 to fix I bought an iPhone 13 and I,m very happy, just missed the flip screen..i will have to buy an apple watch
good vid mate im new to all this but i think the iPhone is on the right let me know if im right or wrong cheers.......then i watched the rest of the vid and ....i know the answer cheers
In some of the shots the camera on the right looks better and in some of the shots it's the other way around. My conclusion, it doesn't matter which one of those two cameras you use for TH-cam videos.
1:08 at this point, I can tell the sony is in the left, because the micro jitters on the stabilization, and also before the right video shows over blue sky, iPhone some times do that; that’s my bet, I will continue watching….
Next time when you are going to ask a question, scroll down the list of comments and see if this guy responds to his comments. Clearly he does not so he is not going to answer you. My opinion is to use an actual camera or video camera HD and not a phone. But again, i am 49 yrs old and i know the value of good pictures or video so i use my point & shoot while the other 99% use their smartphone.
such a great video, i have a few trips coming and was wondering to get this or to use my cell phone. didn't want to bring my mirrorless camera. i mixed up the guesses, so looks like for me i can;t really tell the difference! can't wait to watch your next video!
The dynamic range says left is iphone, with overblown highlights (e.g. the hanging flower pot) and high contrast, but the processing and DOF says right is iphone, so the footage source is a bit unclear. It would be more obvious if you would shoot with a flat profile, and demonstrated that the camera beats the phone in dynamic range as well as everything else except IBIS and portability.
this is exactly what I was looking for. I wss thinking bout buying this camera but I have recently bought the iPhone 16 Pro. I was like wait a minute what am I doing haha

Thanks for the kind words! I was using the amaran 200x with a light dome SE for my main key light, then the lamps have aputure b7c’s in them and the background is all lit by an amaran 100x s up above, you see it all in my studio your video. And I shot it with the 35mm f1.8
@@dunnadidit Thank You So Much.
Hi ! Thanks so much for this very informative video, would you add any further information / change your opinions for people considering using the ZV1 for instagram shorts or tik toks? I am leaning towards the iPhone more as it looks like it’s a lot easier for editing, thanks very much!
Nothing to add or change. It's all about a balance between convenience, functionality and quality. If the iphone meets your needs, then thats great!
super !! thanks so much for that !
What has wider lense. ? Cos zv1 is small
Bro loving the chemex shot ullalalal subscribed 😊😊😊 great content using my phone and dji 4 ❤
Excellent comparison video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Until they can add the computation into the cameras themselves… 🤖
thanks for the info.
No problem!
Great video and fantastic comparison.
Thanks! 👍
Thank you🙏
Hey, a comparison update with the 15 Pro would be awesome if you could do it!
Photosync/LR is a better workflow
I almost instantly recognized which one is which especially during the window scene. The dynamic range, zoomed image clarity and skin tone are the biggest differences.
As a Sony camera user, I could tell you straight away which one was the Sony and which the iPhone. Doesn't say anything about the quality, but it looks like I have an eye for... ;)
Haha nice!
great video! I am still waiting for my pre-ordered zv-1 mark 2 :( sony is so slow here in Poland.
Ah dang! How long ago did you order?
@@dunnadidit 2.06.2023 😂 13 days ago.
It's nuts, I have a Sony video camera and I thought the right one was better :O
The iPhone doesn’t have a 50mm f1.8 tho… nor 70mm f1.8 with a 1 inch sensor. I’m gonna make a TH-cam video after buying this camera competing iPhone 15 Pro Max with it for both stills and street photography.
Ohh I’m talking about the ZV1 mark 1. I hate the mark 2
Excellent video.
You forgot the flippy screen lets you shoot with the Sony using the same sensor vs. selfie video using the front facing camera sensor on the iPhone. Wish you had compared the front facing camera on the iPhone and the ZV1M2.
Anyone have any advice for filming at a concert? I have both but am unsure which would get the best quality
Which one to use for cooking photos and videos?
How did i know:
- Dynamic range is terrible on ZV1
- ZV1 is shaky
-Iphone has a blue tint
I like your iPhone and Sony cam hand hold mount what is it and does it come with stick please 🙏🏻 advise model number brand and details thanks
Which editing app would you recommend for beginners ?
I'd guess left is Sony and right is iPhone. There were burnt out highlihts on the left and shadows were brighter on the right. And the right one generally looked like it had wider dynamic range indoors which I assume is from the iPhone achieved by software.
3:43 for the answer. Anyway, turn out i like the sony version..
For stabilization, I think you don't use Gyroscopic Stabilization in in post process.
Great job ✌️🇨🇦
i like the color in this video
I don't know which was is which but the one on the right is better. I'll be back when I finish watching the video. Wow, I was surprised.
Isn't post production edit solves most iphone (except cinematic mode) problem though?
Currently trying to decide between the ZV1 Mark II vs the A7IV. I currently have the 1st version of the ZV-1.
I thought the Sonya ZV1 had wifi ...you can send pics electronically?
Yeah, that’s one of the advantages to having such a small sensor I think, having insane stabilization is easier.
My 17-28mm f/2.8 Tamron lens better, but that cost as much as the ZV-1.
you said "acceptable footage", this is excellent amazing footage from both
I crack up at how camera pros say video "appears over processed" when the "nooks and crannies" in their faces actually show how old they are! Hilarious!
How about photo comparison ?
Good comparison. I have a headache already from comparing iPhone/ZV-1/ZV-1F 😬
That's the most San Francisco way to make coffee that I've ever seen.
For drawing art purpose inside my bedroom or in the coffee shop which one do you recommend? Thanks
Ahh 🤦🏽♂️
Does this camera comes with this sony tipoid as well? and does it accept a usb mic?
Easily spotted the "iphone look" of the video 😅 oversharpend and over processed 😅😅😅
Preordered, really looking forward to the low light test.
Ayee, "Zed" got that shout out! 😉🇨🇦
Haha I always get in trouble when I just say zee
I dropped My sony zv-1 at floor and broke the msin board..instead to pay $400 to fix I bought an iPhone 13 and I,m very happy, just missed the flip screen..i will have to buy an apple watch
Left: decent budget camera.
Right: oversharpened, low-quality color science, HDR trash iPhone footage I can recognize from half a mile away, heh.
good vid mate im new to all this but i think the iPhone is on the right let me know if im right or wrong cheers.......then i watched the rest of the vid and ....i know the answer cheers
Nice! How did you feel about each of the images?
In some of the shots the camera on the right looks better and in some of the shots it's the other way around. My conclusion, it doesn't matter which one of those two cameras you use for TH-cam videos.
1:08 at this point, I can tell the sony is in the left, because the micro jitters on the stabilization, and also before the right video shows over blue sky, iPhone some times do that; that’s my bet, I will continue watching….
which one you think better for wedding content creator Dunna?
Thank you. Eventually I got ZV-E10 + iPhone combination.
Hi, does this still have a 5 min. max 4k clip record limit like the Mark 1?
What camera did you shoot this video with?
The dynamic range says left is iphone, with overblown highlights (e.g. the hanging flower pot) and high contrast, but the processing and DOF says right is iphone, so the footage source is a bit unclear. It would be more obvious if you would shoot with a flat profile, and demonstrated that the camera beats the phone in dynamic range as well as everything else except IBIS and portability.
this is exactly what I was looking for. I wss thinking bout buying this camera but I have recently bought the iPhone 16 Pro. I was like wait a minute what am I doing haha
iPhone on right lol I know an iPhone shot when I see one 😂
I just got a used ZV1 for $500 that’s like half the price of an iPhone 14 pro. I don’t like holding my phone taking pictures its awkward
