My Canon EOS RP Settings - 10 Things To Do Right Out of the Box

- The Canon EOS RP is a great camera, especially for the price and I get a LOT of use out of it. In this video I will walk you through 10 of the basic settings that I would change on the camera as soon as I took it out of the box. There are plenty more things to tinker with, for sure, but these things are the basic changes I would make before I started using it.

I add File Numbering and Select Folder to my favorites. The File Numbering allows me to create a new folder and begin renumbering the images at 01. I don't need the images renamed, but creating a new folder allows me to separate my images into files while in the camera. As you mentioned, RAW files can take up a lot of space and they can slow down your computer if you are trying to bring 800 photos into DPP at one time. By separating the images into separate folders, I am able to speed up that process. It also helps because I do a lot of dance recitals and sporting events. Creating new folders for each dance or each quarter allows me to search for specific images a little easier.
Cool idea!
Great video! There is one situation I’ve found the beep to be helpful - when taking photos of my 15 month old. The beep gets his attention so I can get a nice shot of his face.
That is interesting! Hadn't thought of that one, cheers!
Loved all the tips you shared.
I never thought of using the RP’s WiFi capability to connect to an iPad as a tethering system. So you check photos and show them to the client or model on a bigger screen than the camera screen.
That is so smart. I thought I’d have to buy expensive tethering software, buy another cable, etc. Could you demonstrate this in a future video of a photo shoot?
Also thanks for showing how to turn off the autofocus beep! That alone earned a “like” from me. In my case, that would come in handy for travel photos. Staying quiet and discreet when taking pictures in museums, places of worship, etc.
Look forward to more videos from you. 🎬 🎥 😎
Thanks for watching, I will add that video idea to my list!
Hello Gary,
I just purchased the Canon RP yesterday. I am trying to be more up to date with my camera equipment. I used to have a great set up, this was the Canon AE-1 35mm, complete with most lenses, then I ended up getting divorced, and as you can imagine; my complete equipment is gone!
I am trying to start all over again with a "modern" set up, so the RP did sound like a good option to me.
I found your video very informative, and useful. Thank you for making the video and posting it.
Love it! Hope you enjoy it as much as I have :)
@@GaryHughesOfficial Thank you Gary
My EOS M original has the touch and drag feature, also touch shutter.
Yes! I miss my M5
Thank you for this video :) I'm waiting for my RP to arrive anytime now, gonna check out these settings right away :)
Hope you enjoy it!
Hello and thank you for this video. I just ordered a Canon RP and an EF / RF adapter ring to be able to use my EF lenses. Coming from a 6D Mark II (I wanted something lighter and more compact), I hope not to be disappointed in terms of image quality. I am thinking of using the RP mainly with the small Canon 40mm f2.8 stm pancake that I love ...
Truly,
Philgood ...
RP is a brilliant camera. Love mine, for sure. I use the 35mm 1.8 as my travel setup. Enjoy!!
@@GaryHughesOfficial Thank you very much for your answer,
Sincerely,
Philgood ...
Didn’t know that there’s an option to add your favorite features to “custom menu” - what a great idea. Also need to try to figure out how to automatically save pics to iPhone/iPad during the photo shoot. Thanks for the very useful video 👍
You can set up the instant transfer using the blue tooth feature. It’s pretty cool, but kills the battery life on the camera and can fill up your device with photos really quickly. That’s why I don’t use it, but it is cool.
The Lp e17 battery is enough to make you avoid buying this.
thinking in getting a RP thanks this help a lot
No worries!
Great video! I just unboxed by RP and this was the first thing I watched and it was super helpful!!
Oh good! Thanks for watching :)
Excited to mess around with RP I have out on loan. I have been recommending the RP for a long time because so many poeple don't shoot video and that is where most of the price jump comes from on the higher end cameras.
I have used this for several videos and it's pretty handy for simple things like talking head videos. I filmed my R5 video settings video with it. The biggest bummer is you lose the dual pixel AF when in 4k, but it's a perfectly great portrait camera and gives great results. At the very least, a worthy backup/travel camera for any Canon pro.
Excellent video! Highly informative........
Well thank you very much!
This was a great video, so you use the RP for video? What’s your video settings for the RP if you do, especially since it doesn’t shoot in log
I don’t use the RP for video, although I have. The 4k shooting mode loses the ability to do eye tracking, that makes it tough for some things. I ahoot almost entirely with the R5 and R7 now for video. If you want something like the RP but way better for video, the R8 is a huge update to the RP :)
@@GaryHughesOfficial oh great, thank you so much
4:39 to see the option for 24P you also have to set the camera mode in NTSC (wrench menu n3)or you will just see a 25P mode available.
I think in the US at least that they come set to NTSC by default :)
excellent video!
Thanks man! Inspired by you
Very helpful! Thanks!
No problem!
Thank you Gary ... I just got given an RP as a gift and sadly I'm a point and press kinda fella. I really want to learn how to use the camera in more than A+ and you just gave me a lot of good thoughts. New subscriber - Mike
It’s a lovely camera, Mike. Enjoy!
@@GaryHughesOfficial thank you ... I really like it .. I mean REALLY, but I'm still very much the A+ chap at the minute and I'd like to be a bit better than that. I am not going to be a pro, or even amateur wedding photographer, but I would like to be able to use it indoors or for photographing birds etc and that's a bit of a dark art at the minute. Great gift though, I'm really chuffed with it
Easiest way to switch over is to start shooting in aperture priority. The camera still does a lot of the work, but you can start to play around with having some manual control :)
I laughed so hard at the "beep" part :DDD Anyways I can think of one possible situation when it could be useful: taking self portraits with a remote control. If you stand a little bit farher away from the camera and can't see well what's happening on the screen. In this case I culd appretiate it telling me that it's OK, he found my face/eye and I'm good to go, I can press that button and shoot :)
Good idea!
Thanks so much for sharing :)
No problem :)
Awesome - love to know what features are your favorite and how I want to set mine up when I buy this week...or next week.... when I get permission. Anyway, love the content - keep it coming. However, your link to the Portable gear comes up Page Not Found.
Thanks, Jim! I will check that link out. The Eye-AF is probably my favorite feature by far on the RP. Much improved over the original version from Canon.
Hey Gary ! I bought an initial Canon EOS RP Camera. Now from initial settings, I need to upgrade it to the version that you showed in the video. . Can you pls suggest me how to do so?
Well this video is a couple years old, you actually might have a newer firmware than this that looks different. If you don’t, you can upgrade the firmware using the Canon Camera Connect app or by downloading the firmware from the Canon site. Just Google update Canon RP firmware and you should be able to find a video on how, it’s pretty straightforward
Thank you, very helpful vid!! Subscribed
Thanks so much, happy to have you :)
I enjoyed this very much but I had a hard time getting to the correct menu area. I wonder if that could be displayed in a box ina corner possibly. But I subscribed.
Thanks for watching, good tip for next time :) I am
Always working to improve my videos
Thanks! when I use the manual settings and reduce the ISO to 100 The camera doesn’t allow me to do focus and the photos appeared very dark, any idea to fix that?
No, sorry. I think there are too many variables here for me to give an accurate answer. I don't know what other settings you have changed or the situation in which you are testing. Best bet is to contact Canon support if you are having a serious issue.
Hello, I just bought the RP yesterday and find out a problem that it’s only show MF in the AF operation in page 7 of the menu, there’s no servo or one shot there.. do you know why? Thank you for the video anyway
Did you buy it used? Have you updated the firmware? You can also reach AF options through the Q button menu.
What about the promised link to the wireless set up of the RP?
Promise fulfilled! th-cam.com/video/uibVSRbzgJg/w-d-xo.html
I’m trying to use Rp’s touch screen to set my iso, aperture and shutter speed
They should be right on the screen at the bottom when in live view mode :)
When you were changing the image quality I noticed you passed by the "JPEG" option or at least it wasn't chosen. Is this something to be concerned about? My image quality is set to CRAW right now.
CRAW is what I use, but jpegs are a good way to save space and take images that you won’t want to do much detailed editing to later. When I am just taking pictures of my kids I use jpegs as I’m not likely to spend a ton of time on processing and often want to send them straight to my phone for social media etc.
Highlite tone priority??
Can you clarify the question please?
were would I look for the instructions on my eon RP mirrorless
You can download the manual from the Canon site :)
how do I put my watermark on my photos?
You can do that in Lightroom, not sure if that’s possible in camera
My Eos RP won’t turn off, I need help. Please
Did you remove the battery?
why it is too much shaking video?
Hold your phone still
@@GaryHughesOfficial how To take hand held videos
Are you saying you want me to make a video on how to take hand-held videos with the RP? It has a digital IS that actually works really well. It crops in a bit, but it does work :)
@@GaryHughesOfficial but tell me to avoid shaking which settings and which lens I have to use ??
@@GaryHughesOfficial with camera I got 24-105 lens
