Back around 1980 I had an epic duck hunt on ice. The plan was for my buddy and I to take my little Jon Boat out to a sand bar type island and hunt there, because everything shallow was frozen. As we drove the 1 1/2 hour drive the wind kept picking up. It was too windy to try to make it out to the island, so we decided to hunt the shoreline. All of the land leading to the shore was private, but we could access it by putting in at the bridge and motoring over. Even the water under the bridge had whitecaps it was so windy. We drove through the thin ice slowly until it got too thick. Then we'd run the boat up onto the ice, jump up and down to break through, back up and do it again. We were only halfway there and it was getting light. We could see ducks flying everywhere over the shallows. About then the prop hit a chunk of ice and popped the shear pin. I didn't have a spare, so we were dead in the water. I noticed lots of ducks flying down like they were trying to land in the open water behind us, but our movements scared them off. I told my buddy we might as well try hunting before trying to get back. We only threw 3 decoys in the narrow strip of open water behind us and then we sat real still. In no time we were covered with ducks and got our limits as quick as we could reload. I was the only one wearing chest waders, so I got "volunteered" to drag the boat back to the bridge. The water was only about 3 feet deep where we were hunting, but it kept getting deeper as we got close to the bridge. We only had one paddle and my buddy was using it to keep the ice broken up in front of me. It had refroze after we had went through it earlier. By the time I got back to the bridge the icy water was just starting to come over the top of my chest waders and it was COLD!!! That truck heater never felt so good and my buddy offered to clean all the ducks, even mine, because I did the hard part of dragging us back in. So, being the nice guy that I am...I let him!
@@HighPrairieSportsmen Thanks. I can't tell you how many times I've had that little 10 foot Jon boat out in the ice and snow, hunting ducks and geese on public lakes. I used some 1/2 inch electrical conduit and made a framework for a duck blind that would fold down when traveling. I didn't have a dog, so I always wore my chest waders and did my own retrieving, if it was shallow enough. Every time I got back in the boat I'd drip water everywhere and it was so cold that before long I'd have ice covering the seats and the floor. But, those bad weather days were some of the best hunting I ever had. I'm old now (almost 70) and videos like yours brings back all those fond memories. I thank you so much for your efforts and I know when you get to be my age you too will have lots of good memories to look back on. Good hunting and stay safe!
I have an almost full lanyard of bands, I don’t know how many geese I had to harvest to do that, I did get one of the double banded reward bands. Goose hunting is a ton of fun. Glad to see you all harvest some geese. I really like the BlackCloud shotshells
@@HighPrairieSportsmen It takes years to fill a lanyard, but also some luck. Your shooting is spot on, which will make it easier. Hunting alone will also be useful so there are no in the field disagreements over who shot which bird sometimes politics like that can get in the way when you have 4-5 people in a blind. I also preferred being by myself that way no drama. I did know of one instance a hunter I knew was hunting geese alone, in winter and for reasons unknown, he drowned in a frozen lake while retrieving a downed goose, interestingly he was over limit when they investigated the hunting accident. No goose is worth dying over, good luck, the videos are great.
Great goose shooting I remember all my good days with high birds and you enjoy and take every day like that and it looks like a 10bore you take care out there
That was a great video! I watch pretty well every waterfowl video I can find on TH-cam and that one is quite possibly my favourite one to date. Keep em coming!
That last clip from the ice was just fantastic! I kept waiting and finally they come into view, crawling across the deck, right at the camera. Thanks for sharing!
I think you are the best waterfowl shots on YT....you continue to impress me with your one-shot kills and reserve not to empty the gun each time. Beautiful camera footage too. Great job. Kinda jealous because I used to do that on the Chesapeake Bay.
Yes. LOVE that goose content! Matt do you ever try to flag when they are a ways out? (Not that u needed to flag in THIS vid🤣👍) Also have u tried using a short reed call? I find then VERY difficult to master :( But I have an old Zink Moneymaker that’s fairly user friendly… it’s just very loud. I find it impossible to hit some of the notes I hear in TH-cam. But can cluck and honk fairly good. Just kinda frustrating to me. I know they say practice practice practice but man I just must not be cut out for it🤣 to be a great caller.
@@bobcrone6151 Yeah, I had my flag with me. Didn't need it like you said haha. I was actually using two short reeds: Zink Power Clucker and Zink Nightmare On Stage. One's more high-pitched so I like it for little geese. They do take some getting used to.
I've always been impressed by your restraint when choosing your shots! You seldom take that third shot. It's interesting to see a different style than someone just unloading every chance they get (like I do)...
Very enjoyable video watching this awesome goose hunt. Thank you for sharing this hunt. Reminds me of my early years throughout the 70’s through mid 90’s in Kentucky and Illinois. You did an awesome job son and again thank you. Very enjoyable!!!
When you're in a good spot, things fall into place like that. Good job.
Thanks!
Sweet goose hunt. Time for some pulled goose!
Thanks Chase! Cooking some right now
@@HighPrairieSportsmen have you ever made pulled goose? One of my favorite ways to cook it.
@@SomewhereInWisconsin yep, great way to cook it up.
Many snow geese were harvested by you guys. It will be the best day. God bless you all.

Their ability to shoot with both speed and accuracy is unmatched.

One thing I like about hunting solo, not that many ppl to hide. Better working bird. Also knowing the X. Great hunt.
Exactly. Lot less to worry about with movement, cover, etc
Epic day. So, inspirational.
