Jacob Marsee deserves a hard look during Spring Training. The AFL is pretty close to the big leagues and to be the MVP means he was the best of the best. About 1/3 of all AFL MVPs over the past decade plus have gone on to not just play in the big leagues but star. Like Kris Bryant. Ronald Acuna. And several more. But that also means that 2/3 might have played in the big leagues but didn't become stars.
Jacob Marsee apparently has a very remarkable AFL season but keep in mind he started 2023 in A ball. He was one of a very interesting group of promising minor leaguers promoted to AA all at once near the end of the San Antonio season run for the playoffs and he apparently did well enough for the Padres to select him to play in the AFL which itself is remarkable considering his brief and meteoric rise through the Padres minor league system.
Can he be ready for a big league audition?
It would be really surprising for a player the Padres selected out of college only a little over a year ago in the middle rounds of the draft.
It could mean that he's a very, very late bloomer or so many talent evaluators just missed on him and the Padres got lucky.

he's not really a late bloomer. Everything he's doing now is right in line with what he's done in college and the lower rungs of the minors. The knock on him is that some of his underlying metrics (like exit velocity) don't support his statistics, and that he doesn't have a lot of room for growth, but if he can translate 80% of his performance to MLB that's a solid contributor. I get why guys like Callis don't quite trust what they're seeing and want a larger sample size before he goes to MLB, but that may be a luxury we don't have.

Sure, a lot depends on trades, but, heck one of these guys, even Merrill, could rise to the occasion. Shildt has watched the AA team and has a good sense if any can emerge and play now defensively in CF and develop his bat here.
The 1969 Mets, with a bunch of forgettable players except for some young pitching greats, had a saying which inspired greatness, You Gotta Believe by reliever, Tug McGraw, dad of Tim McGraw.
That’s what the Padres need, the memory of Seidler could be enough if someone on the team can lead.

The Padres CAN go out and get a centerfielder. Just like they CAN get a left fielder, a DH, three starting pitchers, three more for the bullpen, AND some kind of decent bench for the new manager. The big question is, will there be any good? Baseball rules say the Padres must carry 26 men on the roster, they don't however say that they be any good. Then again we're used to the bottom of the order being automatic outs anyway, it's the substandard pitching we're not used to, and hopefully won't have to witness. It's not often that a padre team goes through a season without a dominant closer either. Hopefully this season doesn't go south right out of the gate. That will be up to AJ and how much the owners finally decide to spend.

You might want to check your stats.
In most of the games the Padres have won starting opening day 2022, nearly all the games the Padres have won involved the bottom of the order. I don't know if the Padres are intentionally constructed this way but aside from Manny, the Padres top of the lineup has a terrible OBA. The Padres stack their boppers near the top but the top 2 spots haven't gotten on base that often so the middle of the order is often asked to produce runs with no one on base. Kim and Bogaerts did a really nice job the last few months leading off which contributed to the late run but Tatis is a big bopper with a terrible to average OBA. Soto was the only consistent bat driving runs became a lot more difficult when Manny got hurt.
The point is, in the last 2 months of 2023, the entire lineup(except Tatis) got on base at least once per game regularly by hit, walk or error. That's 9 extra at bats at least if the entire lineup can simply get on base once per game. If getting on base with a hit even only a single, think of that as a bonus that might often drive in a run if a runner is in scoring position.
      So, think about it.
If the bottom of the Padres order hits .000 but gets on base just 3 times every game and the rest of appearances are outs regularly, is it producing? Are they any good?
If you look at the top of the order stats, too you'll find that as poorly as the Padres team generally hit, the top of the order generally responded well if the someone from the bottom of the order was on base. It's almost like the Padres should consider batting the bottom of the order first but that doesn't make sense if your best hitters are shoved down the lineup and have fewer opportunities to hit every game.

@@tonysu8860 you're welcome to any one of those guys at the bottom of the order. They are there for a reason. As far as the last 2 months of 2023, I throw that out. They beat up on crappy teams however still managed to get their ass kicked by the few over 500 teams they played. No pressure and under 500 teams doesn't thrill me with victories.

The AFL praise for Jakob Marsee is something to behold.
He's the second coming of Soto who does it all but might also play CF.
Has all the tools. Fast. Quick. High OBA. Lots of power. High contact. Steals bases. Quick learner. Don't remember saying he has a remarkable arm but God doesn't make anyone perfect.
Although to this point it's all Minor Leagues, is he the next Padres CF and leadoff hitter?

According to some reports his exit velocity is bad even for a prospect. The power likely won't translate to MLB but he's a patient hitter (shown by his great OBP) that has a good eye, that should translate.
