Best car made. Simple and economical. Hope it gets some love. Mine has 345,000 km

@M S try to get it to 500,000 km. Mines still considered a baby with 240,000 kilometers. Easily be able to do twice that

One evening, my wife came home fearing there was a critter in the bowels of her 2009 Matrix. I raised the hood and was looking around. She came up and joined me in looking around the engine. At that moment, the sizeable rat that had hitched a ride from her work parking lot came up from behind the intake cover. Rat gave her a big shock, and her scream did the same for me.

Was that Matrix made in Cambridge, Ontario? Ones that come out of that Canadian plant seem almost indestructible.🇨🇦

@Jeff Winter yes, they are definitely pretty indestructible. I have a 2006 Matrix base auto 1.8L engine, it's still considered a baby with only 240,000 km, I plan to own it for at least a decade more, it will easily be able to do twice the mileage it has now. Maybe even 3X more. These cars are just so well made, if I take care of a basically indestructible car, it will be a match made in Heaven. Putting new Akebono brake pads on it tomorrow 👍.

After I retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2002, I started a small hobby, to make extra cash. This "hobby" I speak of is buying junked dirt bikes and refreshing them to sell. I've noticed that most of the time these units suffer from lack of routine maintenance. I see the same thing with this vehicle. Just look at the dark contamination in the brake/clutch reservoir.

If you take off the "Bernie" sticker, that would probably clear a lot of the trouble codes.

Very harsh there, the customer may have neglected it, but is paying to have it inspected, fixed, and IS then giving it to a friend. It's not like it's been left rotting in a field, it's still in good condition, was probably garaged, so easily forgotten about, out of sight, out of mind.

@Kevin Meraz 90 percent of Toyota's in the junkyard with less than 300,000 kilometers I have found it was either from a collision or Lot-Rot like someone above mentioned. Otherwise, I've seen them go 5,6,700,000 kilometers vertually trouble free

I had a rat in my car, These was a whole heap of snail shells around the engine bay. Who knew that rats eat snails. I didn't until then.

This is why owners should allow for the Toyota old seal automatic lubrication system to take effect

"She said it is barely moving." My 2006 5 sp manual Matrix is in perfect running order, and while driving it too seems like it is barely moving 🤣... All 125 HP pushing that 2900 lb vehicle. Joke aside, I do wish it had a cable TB over the drive by wire... I hate the lag and especially the rev-hang. Not to mention the clutch and shift feel are terrible.

I have both 2003 and 2004 Matrixs with manuals. These first two years of production have a different way of controlling the cruise control and the engine has a more old school throttle bottle system with more solid throttle control.
I went to the junk yard to find a good use parts car, but only 2006 manual was looking great. Then checked the details in my Toyota Matrix repair manual to discover only the 2003 and 2004 years have this more manual controlled system of speed control.
The 2006 Matrix looked really good in condition and it had brand new but rusted rotors. Drove to pick a part on window, so the motor and tranny had got the car to pick a part. So there may have been a brand new clutch in the car, it only suffer front drivers side damage.
So an older Matrix might be up your alley.

Have you changed a transmission solenoid in a 2004 Matrix? Approximate price?

When my Corolla got an engine transplant, the throttle body that came with it would stick, so I had to put the one from the bad engine and problem went away.

Hi Peter…Thanks for sharing this awesome matrix. Question: is possible in this condition to “wash” the engine compartment? How can be done? Greetings criss

That Matrix has a bad case of "Lot Rot." A condition caused by sitting unused for way too long.

It’s surprising (maybe not so much) that people can’t even figure out to work the throttle lever by hand to get it unstuck.
You’ve got to pressure wash that engine before getting in there and getting exposed to those toxins from the rodent droppings.

I would hit under the hood with a power blower or vacuum to remove the loose junk, followed by a hose down with a garden hose to remove the corrosive rodent urine. Don't power wash under your hood, since water can get into electrical stuff, if moving at high enough velocity.

@Bill Simpson finally! Someone like you actually has common sense & knows what to & not use a pressure washer. Unlike a lot of other people. Hats off to you, good work 👍

Ah, was wondering what happened to you today. Case of the Mondays no doubt. As always when we hear of a rats condo, protect yourself from the dreaded hantavirus sickness. Worse than corona. Protect your breathing. And also wear gloves. If you decide to wash the engine bay, protect your mouth and eyes and breathing from the list and possible splashbacks. And from the reviews online, if you use the coin op car wash down the street to this shop, beware the owner man of that self service car wash. Doesn't seem very friendly.

The minute that car gets used and heat is applied to the engine: every gasket & will leak such as water pump, head gasket, heater core and many other parts plus probably brake calipers and rear drum brakes will stiffen up and stick along with a.c. clutch seizing up. Add mice chewing thru wire harness damage also.. Unsafe money pit in my opinion.
