I think this is my favourite of the new Red Dwarf episodes. It's a really clever premise, plus it shows that Lister isn't dumb, just really lazy, ignorant and unmotivated. He's pretty smart when forced into a situation that needs him to think his way out.

Just going to add to this, previous series audience places were booked through "lost in tv" so I'd assume it'll be the same this time if you want to monitor something.
The episode I was there for is coming up, I think episode 5

  • @painreliever83

Yep, the 'Dave' era was good time. Series X in particular always feels to me like a 'greatest hits' of all the previous seasons, you had the small-scale episodes where everything happens on the ship like the early series, as well as the high concept sci-fi stuff and the 'baddie of the week' type episodes. Really good stuff. I was also lucky enough to be in the audience for a later episode (from Series XI), so I'll shout up when that comes around and share some anecdotes from the recording.
PS I saw Kat put the gnome in their hair and the little glance to camera when Paula didn't say anything... very much enjoyed them keeping it there for the whole episode, the little scamp

There are 3000 decks and at least 569 bunks on RD, so it should be no surprise, over 30 years they would change sleeping quarters occasionally.

  • @adamcashin4021

I re-watched this several times before I worked out how the conversation between Dad Lister and Junior worked with Dad Lister seemingly knowing what Junior was going to say. When Lister firsts meets Pree he says 'I have a job for you'. Offscreen presumably Dad Lister got Pree to predict Juniors' response to seeing the video and hence was able to fully predict everything including the don't swear. The scene is hilarious so I never really thought how is this actually working the first few times; but its great that Naylor was able to write the scene in a way that made sense without needing to explain it, even though it was so funny that it didn't actually need a RL explanation

Oh man ! Didn’t I tell ya ? ! “Fathers and Suns” was classic Red Dwarf ! Craig Charles drunk acting is worth of an award ! LOL And the jokes… every one landed so perfectly, particularly the running ones of Lister forwarding ahead in his Dad’s video and Rimmer’s sexist selections for Pree… I mean you know how a Red Dwarf running gag gets predictable, trite and tedious JUST before it culminates ? Not so with these ones ! Oh and the dynamic between Lister and his Dad is so organic and relatable… and the ingenious resolution to the Pree b-story… just nothing misses in this episode IMHO… it’s why I insist that some Series X episodes are on par as any in Series I to V… easily.
The magic is BACK BABY !

  •  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +17

Fun fact: Craig Charles had the flu while filming Lister's video rant to himself, so the ill look was real.

  • @SketchyMagpie
    @SketchyMagpie 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

A subtle joke a lot of people missed (me included!) first time around, Rimmer skipped over the frame size of the new computer so wasn’t aware he was picking one that would crop out the breasts he was so hyper-focused on.

  • @SpikeMatthews
    @SpikeMatthews 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +13

This is by far one of the best episodes for plot and characterisation. The 'tough love' video conversation is sheer brilliance. FYI, when they were shooting the Drunk Daddy Lister bits, Craig Charles was seriously ill (flu, I think). I don't imagine much acting was needed for the bits where he fell of his chair...

The term "Chinese Whispers" was a the standard name people in the UK of my age (who were teenagers when RD first came out) used for the game you know as "Telephone". I don't think for most of us it was explicitly racist but it does fit in that category of "things we thought were ok in the 80s but were not".

If you were wondering about why the Medibot avatar gave you both the creeps, the actor playing the character is the same one who played the creepy orphanage director in the Doctor Who episode "Day of the Moon" that you rewatched (I assume) recently.
Also, this episode isn't one of my all-time favourites or anything, but I will give it credit for having one of the greatest Rimmer lines of all time (as per usual, it's Chris Barrie's delivery that really nails the moment):
"Are you telling me that you knew I would cock it up, so you cocked it up for me?!"

This series so far is like S3-S5. It's almost as if Rob Grant sneakily helped with the writing. That fun, antagonistic banter is back, along with their youthful spontaneity, the silliness, the fresh jokes and perfect comedic timing, not to mention their original personalities and the laughter track. It's a very different vibe to Series 6, 7, 8 and 9, which felt post-golden age.

If you think about it. The way Lister could talk to himself over the video tape is because Pre was predicting his reactions to his statements. Lister could then counter react.
You could also argue that Pre didn't go bonkers. This was all her plan to motivate Lister to fix his tooth and to do something with his life, even if it meant uninstalling herself.
She manipulated everything and accomplished the job Lister gave her.

In terms of the production values, it may actually surprise you that this was filmed in three main sets the Drive room, Living quarters and a lone Corridor set that was redressed to look different. The Medical bay scenes were actually just filmed in the living quarters but with the Doctor's screen so large you cant see the set behind. Pree was just shot off to the side with a black curtain background.
Its actually an amazingly clever piece of production; and was done very much on the cheap. The episode was filmed with just the principal cast and one guest star (plus a few voice over artists) and due to a lack of location shooting it was all shot in 3 hours in a single evening.

    • @Xethian

@@Xethian Sadly not been myself, but I've seen the series-X sets in various media. Left hand side was the episode specific set (like the Trojan flight deck), then the drive room, followed by the corridor and finally the living quarters.
The Corridor set is T shaped and runs behind the drive room and living quarters. This gives the cast corners to walk round, and the appearance of depth.
In F&S there is no episode specific set other than the medical bay, which I think was just placed in front of the living quarters.

You should get to a live taping of the 2025 episodes. I heard that shooting of the new ones start in October (soon).

I'll be honest, I noticed about a second AFTER Paula did.
I love this episode, this and "Lemons" are my fav of S10. Chinese Whispers is definiitely based on a racist trope, but as a kids game I think has escaped most people's attention. I never thought about it before this episode aired, anyway.

Growing up in the 80s UK I can definitely remember playing Chinese Whispers in primary school, not sure when it changed for the better (because I've not played it since Primary School).

In the USA they use Telephone or Broken Telephone, which is certainly better as it's not loaded with implied xenophobia.

If you're interested in seeing Chloe Annatt in something else sci-fi, and if you can find it, I recommend Crime Traveller, which is - as the name suggests - a time-travel/police drama. There are only eight episodes, so it could fill a short gap in your schedule.

I remember living in Reading at the time that was being made and there were film cameras and crew all over the place near the town museum and the statue of Queen Victoria. I had to walk the long way round to Uni. Then when I later watched the first episode I realised what the fuss was about - they were setting up for a car chase sequence. I can remember watching the car on screen whizz round a corner and out of shot and thinking “hang on, that’s pedestrianised there. You’ll smash into the bollards”. But of course that didn’t happen because of the magic of TV!
I found the show to be fairly ‘meh’. It wasn’t awful, but I could understand why it never got a second series.

@@djco5782 Yes, I know. However, the picture quality isn't brilliant and I'm not sure how the Gals feel about pirated material on their channel. I mean, if they're not bothered, then it's easy enough to find, I suppose.

One of my absolute favorite episodes of the entire show's run. And as much as folks like to say Red Dwarf has no continuity, this episodes is literally built on the continuity of Lister's existence established throughout the series.
I also love how this episode demonstrates that Lister actually is intelligent if he would just try.

The thing I first thought when I heard the name "Chinese whispers" is that it's kind of a neat name for the game, since Mandarin is a tonal language, whispering it would possibly introduce ambiguity and mistakes. But I don't think that was the original meaning of the name, and it was probably created in a racist fashion, not a "wow, languages are neat" way, so I kinda bristle when I hear it.

Heh, I'm the same age as Craig Charles! It was definitely called Chinese Whispers when I was growing up, and yeah, that's totally for racist reasons. You can tell the vintage by the example I always remember: "We're going to a dance. Send three and fourpence". It's pre decimal currency, so no later than 1970, and the original line refers to the war: "We're going to advance, send reinforcements". I was impressed the gnome stayed in Kat's hair the whole reaction!

Gnome Dome. Pree Red Dwarf was current Red Dwarf and is now Past Red Dwarf... It's goid that they brought back the talking vending machines. It will become a running gag. I think the bridge section is supposed to give the ship the same feel as the Starbug cockpit and the bunkroom is just an updated version of all the bunkrooms from previous series.
