Love that you’re back posting. Hope that cold didn’t last too long. I did similar two winters ago and spent a small fortune. Several Paramo items; Cascada trousers, Alta 3 jacket, Bentu plus fleece and Decathalon merino wool base layer top plus merino Darn Tough socks. Throw in a merino wool beanie and neck warmer plus Seal Skinz thermal gloves and I was ready for the arctic. All of these items were bought after a heap of research and lots of other gear that was not effective. This gear was expensive but has proved totally worthwhile in torrential rain, up to 85mph winds and total white out snow. Bring it on. I added a Thermarest xtherm mattress & a crazy expensive US -15° quilt and invested in a Crux Assault tent plus Delta pegs. Now I love getting out regardless of the weather. The dog also got a new Thermarest shorty mattress and his own down blanket and a new set of waterproofs plus thermal PJ’s. Now, going out in the winter is actually fun.
You never go wrong with a Hilleberg Tent. I have a Nallo and love it in all kind of weather.Great watch and a very nice trip. Have a wonderful weekend.
You’re the 1st to comment on it tim! 👏🏼🥇 Yeah, In a way I think I preferred the snow around the tent in the morning rather than being in a hut, so all good Thanks as always, and happy Christmas Ash 🏕️🎅🏼🏔️
Shame about the bothy Ash it looked a good camp none the less it was a good watch from my side lol keep them coming mate. I'm the same hope to do a bothy camp in 2023 never done one before. All the best mate. Sam!!
Hey Sam! Thanks mate. Yeah I think I preferred it waking up to the snow around the tent rather than a bothy, I might save it for when a rainy one is due! Happy Christmas buddy Ash
That’s some seriously beautiful scenery what a view to wake up to , shame about the Bothy but the Hilli was looking good out there ! Hope ya feel better fella Atb Col
Hi Ash, that looks like a brilliant camp in the snow! You are so inspirational! Not sure if anyone else mentioned it already, but that was actually the Rugby Mountaineering Club hut that you couldn't get into. I stayed there a few times. It's a great little hut, and is available for hire, but you have to get the key posted to you ahead of the planned visit.
Amazing Ash, can't believe we finally got snowww!! 😍 It got down to -3 over in the Arans. So beautiful 💚 so funny that you went to the wrong bothy haha 😄 xx
Hey what's up buddy ....another awesome video. we need to get you up to 100.000 subscribers you are by far one of the best UK wild campers I watch. Looking forward to the next video
Squeaky squeaky 😃 what a beautiful trip in the snow! ❄️ can’t believe the bothy was locked … gutted! It’s a shame there’s not a website or app you can go on to check which ones are open x
Hey kerry! Yeah bloody squeak, although I didn’t notice it on the hike out? 🤔 it turns out this wasn’t a bothy but a little place you can hire out. I was in the wrong valley and there was a bothy in the next one! Next time 😅 Thanks for watching, happy Christmas x
Great video Ash as always and what a Cracking Area to walk and wild camp, I did a wild a at the head of the valley some time ago now and loved it, I believe it isn't a Bothie but it's privately owned think it's a rugby club who own it'dont quote me on this but I may have read somwere that it's open for hire now thst was about four years back, but what a Beautiful Base that would make with Amazing views, Enjoyed the Video and hope you are feeling somewhat better by now, Keep Safe, Les.
Hey les! Thanks mate, and yes you’re right, they guy I met in the morning there told me the information about how to hire it. And as it turns out wasn’t where I’d planned to be, my map was on my phone and broke and didn’t have a paper one 🤦🏻♂️ I know where to go next time though! Thanks for watching buddy, Ash 🏕️🏔️
Great video ash , back in my younger day's I always used my tent ⛺️ I was never one for bothys but that's just me the kit you had was absolutely brilliant expensive but worth it my grandkids think your super brave for camping in snow (they have given me a list what they want off santa for Christmas when they start camping DD 3X3 TARP ,DD HAMMOCK, DD UNDERBLANKET ,RAB SLEEPING BAG AND THATS EACH something tells me it's going to be an expensive Christmas lol 🎄
Wow! They have good taste though Norman! Yes, you’re right was well worth the money, and that tent has kept me safe on a good few camps now so I feel the price tag is justified! Say hi to the grandkids for me! And have a great evening Ash
Well done Ash. It may not have worked out completely on what you expected but hey that is adventure and why we all do this stuff. See you in the next one!
Did you open the vent? Have the Soulo BL myself which I prefer to the Tarra I used to have which was really too big for solo adventures. The Soulo does suffer from condensation, but unlike the akto, not really an issue as plenty of space inside so you not touching the wet inner. The Soulo is just the right size, the akto being a bit cramped as can only sit up in the middle. When you come to Scotland, will not have to worry about being caught illegally camping.
Yeah, think I always have the vent open, still get condensation sometime. Not always tho, was out In the soulo last night and had no condensation at all Oh I can’t wait to get to Scotland, looks amazing up there 🙌🏻
Nice to catch up with you Ash so merry Christmas. It would have all gone to plan if not for the phone. Don't forget your map and compas. Thanks for taking us along. Cheers. 🍻👍❤
Stunning location mate 🏔️ Live and learn re the bothy ay - you smiled and moved to plan B 👏🏽 Great bag - bought the same for this winter - been down to -3 in it - toasty👌🏾 When you’re not feeling it you made the right call to head home for a warm bath/ice plunge❄️😁 ATB mate - Marcus.
Hey Marcus! Thank you pal! Yeah such a nice bag, looking forward to using it again soon. Yeah, no way I fancied another night in a tent lol Ice bath sorted me right out 😄 Thanks for watching buddy Ash
That was great, so lovely to see you back doing the happy box ticking. I think many bothies are being forced that way due to the vandalism risks, so sad. Bothy camps are my total favourite, so I’ll be waiting tapping digits awaiting that one! Thanks for taking the time to document, love the waffle. 😆
Hey Cara! Yeah it seems that way, and I kind of understand from that perspective. This wasn’t actually the bothy id planned on going to. But I’d dropped my phone and map was on that so I was in a valley too soon 😅 Thanks as always for watching, and hope you’re all well Ash
I definitely agree it's worth spending the money on winter gear makes so much difference and can come down to being safe aswell.as for pillows I'm same I've tried so many but don't want to start carrying 2 think I'll just have to keep searching lol
Yeah, if you’re doing pretty extreme weather camping it’s better to be safe than sorry. It’s should also last for years if I look after it I’ll reserve judgment on the pillow success until I’ve tried it a few more times
What is it with these Welsh camps that make it look like you're the last guy on earth! Stunning place anyway, but epic in the snow. Did the thought cross your mind to have a dip in the lake 🥶😉🏞? Great video mate👍💪🚶♂️🤘
I literally was there… until the next morning! 😅 I definitely would have had I not been ill… you know me 😅 Thanks for watching Paul, and merry Christmas Ash
It’s been a while..nice to see you back! Beautiful scenery when the sun is out, blue sky and snow covered trail. When the snow came in it looked a bit bleak..no wood around for a fire Too bad about the bothy..it did look rather warm and cozy..next time you can rent one Until the next video..have a Merry Christmas 🇨🇦🎄❄️🔥❤️
Oh wow, that will be an amazing adventure! I think my coldest may be around -7c but not totally sure. I’ve definitely done -5c that I’ve recorded! Good luck with the Everest camp! Ash
Hi Ash! Looks like you are in the wrong valley that looks more like the climbing association hut. Dulyn bothy has a green door and much bigger 👍 looks like you had a great camp regardless. Sometimes the best ones are the ones that require a bit of on the spot thinking 😁 ATB
Yes I was! You’re right. Couldn’t see where I was as I dropped my phone and my map was on there 🤦🏻♂️ lesson learnt lol But yeh, think I enjoyed the tent more for the views in the end 🙌🏻🏔️
Awww lovely Ash!! I’m so chuffed you managed to get out in the snow, it makes the amazing scenery all the more dramatic!! I feel you with the squeaky pack… did you find yourself kinda walking in rhythm with it?’ 😂🤣😂 Gutted the bothy was locked, could feel your frustration 😢 That pillow looks amazing! I’ve got a Thermarest pillow that I absolutely love and it’s worth the bulkiness to be comfy! I have the same issue with my neck/shoulder hurting if my head’s not high enough. So glad you enjoyed your night and that all your gear performed how you’d hoped it would. Feel better soon lovely!! 🥰
Hey Karen!! Ahhh thanks, I already feel back to normal, was a short lived one 😅 Yeah I hate the shoulder pain… I love hammocks as I don’t get it then, but I can’t roll around in a hammock, I’m such a bloody fidget in bed… maybe campings not for me 😆 Yeah, so stunning up there with a dusting… loved it! Thanks for watching and have a great week 😊 x
😁❄️👍 hi Ash. Great video despite not going as planned. But no complaints on the camping setup with cracking gear, plus hille 👍👍😁 hope your much better now and already planning or done another adventure.. The Sumner heatwaves seem so long ago now 🤣😁
Don’t they just Mike… won’t be long until they’re back again 🥵 I have one to edit from a couple of months back still, just been super busy! Thanks as always for watching mate Ash
excellent vid ash, im back over their this weekend hoping for snow, not hiked or wildcamped for a couple of months so i know its going to kill me, not sure im looking forward to it or dreading it, not long had covid so struggling for motivation and fatigue is low but im gojng to give it a go, dan
Thanks mark, stunning wasn’t it! Yeah I love the Rab stuff, never had any insulating gear from them before but was impressed 👌🏼 Thanks for watching mate Ash 🏔️🏕️
Dropped my phone just before Xmas mate. Wanted the same for a screen as they did for a early upgrade. Very annoying. 300 quid down, but all the info on the old phone is stuck.
It might not have been as comfortable, but it shows that you can still have a "comfortable" night if you have the right kit with you. And you bagged your first "camp in the mountains in snow" with the bonus of "in a tent" and the handicap of "man-flu". 😜
Lol, yeah when you put it like that I’m hardcore 😅🏔️🏕️ was so nice waking up with those views, I’m kinda glad I didn’t stay in the bothy now lol Thanks for watching mate Ash
Nice one Ash pity about the bothy being locked but I think it a better idea to run them the way they do some of the bothys up in Northumberland get trashed so booking and paying for it especially if its got wood and cooking equipment setup for you is even better saves you carrying it all in atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Hey jimmy! Thanks mate. It turns out it wasn’t the bothy I’d planned on going too 😅 I think I preferred waking up with the views in the end anyways Happy Christmas mate Ash
Yeah see this is one of many reasons why the idea of a bothy just doesn't appeal to me somehow - I'd be gutted! Anyway, bothy is at best a 1 star house, but a Soulo is a 5 star tent👌. Sorry to see you weren't feeling great Ash, I hope it didn't linger too long? I've been after an Ascent 900 for about three years now, but I just wince at buying another 200 quid plus sleeping bag. It's only a matter of time... great vid mate, and a stunning valley. Cheers and all the best for Chrimbo! Rich 👍
Hey Rich! Yeah, I’m not that keen really, just would have been nice to tick off the list… next time! 😅 Yeah, can’t beat the soulo can you! I was as snug as a bug in there that night. 100% recommend the 900 too, but I feel ya… so much money! 😬 hope all is well mate Ash
Dude you're well to lared up, I mean I'm a bin man and all I ware for work is a cheap synthetic base lare, work trousers, cotton t-shirt and a high-viz bomber jacket with the sleeves opened ¼ (they're removable) and 3m thinsulate gloves and a buff/rasta beany and I still get a few small sweat patches. Personally I like hot tenting in the winter it's mad effort but there's nothing like a sauna in the woods and a proper slow cooked meal
Yeah I was well overkill, the hoodie was too much 😅 I had to put the coat on tho for waterproof… I’d love to do a hot tent! I may well look into a stove soon 🙌🏻 thanks for watching buddy Ash
@@AshOutdoorsUK granted I've got this crazy idea of a hot tub in the woods made with a copper pipe coil in/around a fire in either a builders bathtub or a lined hole, now I might just be a little odd but it'll happen one day and it'll be lush AF
Yeah, I felt rough man 😅 was glad I went though, loved it in the end! It’s the soulo mate, heavy and expensive but for me, worth its weight in gold. Especially in bad conditions 👌🏼
lol you put me to shame pal i did me first ever over night cold camp last night with hammock etc in local woods, and you are where i would of preferred to of been buddy, fair play to ya mate, i had the luxury of a camp fire though 😉
Hey mark! Ahh ya can’t beat a camp fire on a cold camp. This is my 1st snow camp in the mountains so I was pretty excited to be fair, loved it! 😁 thank you for watching mate Ash
As it happens, you were in completely the wrong valley! In the next valley you would have found the Dulyn bothy, which is near Melyn Llyn and Llyn Dulyn.
Omg you’re right! That was the one I was supposed to go to!! Ironically I didn’t take a map as I’d downloaded the os on my phone to try out… smashed my phone so I thought I was in a different area than I actually was! Thank you for pointing that out!!! 🙏🏼🙌🏻
@@AshOutdoorsUK I actually live not far from the bothy. Unfortunately, because of easy access it tends to get abused by large groups using it as a party venue. It's a shame, because it is in a great spot.
Hi Ash, it was me in the cottage (not a bothy)! If you would have knocked the door at 7pm I would have let you in! Check out my film from my trip there: th-cam.com/video/yRPPs2jIyQM/w-d-xo.html
Hey Jeff! I’m sorry I called you john! Lol Could you send me the contact details on insta please? I’ll check your bid out tomorrow buddy! Hope you had a wicked time! 🏔️🏕️
Hello mate, yeah I had a mild cold. Felt rough Saturday morning but pretty much back to normal now today so all good! Thanks for your concern and thanks as always for watching Ash

Mate 😂 your honesty in this made me laugh - really felt for you!
Muchly appreciated 👍
Lol, cheers Carl, felt pretty ropey and another night in a tent wasn’t sounding too appealing on this occasion 😅
Thanks for watching mate
Ash
Appreciate your honesty by saying "can't be arsed" Yes, feel like that too at times while hiking. But keep going back for more as always. 😆
Thanks matt! Lol, yeah I was feeling well ropey! Another night camping sounded like a bad idea 😅

Yeah luckily it was just the screen for me, still £100 out of pocket 🙄😅
It might not have been as comfortable, but it shows that you can still have a "comfortable" night if you have the right kit with you. And you bagged your first "camp in the mountains in snow" with the bonus of "in a tent" and the handicap of "man-flu". 😜
Lol, yeah when you put it like that I’m hardcore 😅🏔️🏕️ was so nice waking up with those views, I’m kinda glad I didn’t stay in the bothy now lol
Thanks for watching mate
Ash
@AshOutdoorsUK its all about perspective
Good to see ya Ash.........Your videos are well missed.
Thank you mate, and it’s good to be back! Have a great Christmas 🎅🏼
Ash
Not much point in a locked bothy. Best wishes for challenges next year.
Indeed! Thanks mate, and happy Christmas
Ash
Hi Ash another cracking video Cheers Jc👍🏻
Thank you john! Thank you for tuning in again!
Ash
Why were the bothys locked ?
Apparently you have to book and pay for it and they send you a key… it’s not a national bothy association one…
It turns out it wasn’t the bothy I’d planned on going too 😅 I think I preferred waking up with the views in the end anyways
Happy Christmas mate
Ash
@@AshOutdoorsUK better being outside mate happy Xmas mate 🍺🍺
Yeah, can’t beat the soulo can you! I was as snug as a bug in there that night. 100% recommend the 900 too, but I feel ya… so much money! 😬 hope all is well mate
Ash
I may well look into a stove soon 🙌🏻 thanks for watching buddy
Ash
@@AshOutdoorsUK granted I've got this crazy idea of a hot tub in the woods made with a copper pipe coil in/around a fire in either a builders bathtub or a lined hole, now I might just be a little odd but it'll happen one day and it'll be lush AF
Nice 1 Ash unlucky with the bothy 👍🏻
Cheers craig! Yeah, another time maybe. At least I know it’s usable 👌🏼🏕️
Good stuff Ash. 👍 Shame about the bothy but theres always next time 👍
Cheers mate, yup at least I know now 😅 thanks for watching 🏕️🏔️
Fair play for getting out when you’re feeling ropey Ash! What Hilleberg is that btw? I always struggle with the pillow combo too.
Yeah, I felt rough man 😅 was glad I went though, loved it in the end!
It’s the soulo mate, heavy and expensive but for me, worth its weight in gold. Especially in bad conditions 👌🏼
@@AshOutdoorsUK Yeah been looking at the Soulo. It just looked more roomy than I thought it might be. May just get it now. :-)
@@DadDoesOutdoors it’s not roomy at all mate 😅 it’s the wide angle on the GoPro makes it look bigger in there
In Scotland they have BOTHIES
Correct 👍🏼
What a shame someone locked the bothy, those things are sposed to exist to help people keep safe.
lol you put me to shame pal i did me first ever over night cold camp last night with hammock etc in local woods, and you are where i would of preferred to of been buddy, fair play to ya mate, i had the luxury of a camp fire though 😉
Hey mark! Ahh ya can’t beat a camp fire on a cold camp. This is my 1st snow camp in the mountains so I was pretty excited to be fair, loved it! 😁 thank you for watching mate
Ash
Swiss army knife screwdriver would of had that bolt un done and off dude 👍
Or angle grinder? I got a battery operated one I can take next time 😅
@@AshOutdoorsUK 🤣🤣🤣
Man flu is of course bad, but have you had Man Covid yet?
Yeah, got that in 2021… and survived to tell the tale 😅
🎶 Who ate all the pies? Who-ate-all-the-pies? 🎵 [jokes]
🤔 king Henry?? 🤷🏻♂️
Enjoyed your vid, shame you had to bug out.
Thanks Norman, it’s all good, had better views in the end! Thanks for watching
Always carry spare phone, ear plugs and bolt cutters !
😁😂 they are from now on in 😆
And carry an OS map
Rub a bit of candle wax on the squeak - that's if you can manage to hunt the damn thing down.... 👍
That’s a good call, thanks mate! 🏕️🙌🏻👌🏼
Lol
Could you send me the contact details on insta please?
I’ll check your bid out tomorrow buddy! Hope you had a wicked time! 🏔️🏕️
Bet you wont do that again bro 😂. I’m from Scotland, done it once. Took about 2 days for ma penis to re appear
😆 lol, I actually prefer camping in winter, can’t stand being to hot!
Thanks for watching mate
Why the constant mindless chatter? It's mostly brain noise and devalues your channel.
😅 thanks for watching my mindless brain noice, and merry Christmas to ya mr moose 🎅🏼
Good trekin!
Glad you found the gear that is best for you. Good Pillow
Thanks 😁 yeah the pillow was proper luxurious… worth the room in the bag and weight? …. I’m not sure yet, watch this space 🏕️🏔️
Woah. You have to pay to stay in the bothy and book on line! That’s disgusting! Money grubbing scumbags. 💀
It turns out this wasn’t an actual bothy… more a little holiday cottage. There is however one in the next valley!
Seemed like you were coming down with something probably not best being out in the cold, gorgeous scenery hope you're okay fella.
Hello mate, yeah I had a mild cold. Felt rough Saturday morning but pretty much back to normal now today so all good! Thanks for your concern and thanks as always for watching
Ash
