You are the one who showed me Shou Sugi Ban techniques now I’m opening a small business! This Koolaid trick is badass!! And cheap! Gonna have to try it...TY AGAIN 🙌🍻
Dude my wife showed me this on her tick took. So I introduced her to your TH-cam channel. She is a first grade teacher, I am going to burn some boards and then her kids are going to use Kool Aid to stain them after words the will trace their hands and write their names on them. After I Finish them they will give them to their parents. Thanks for the inspiration.
Been making ebonizing acetate with vinegar & steel wool and all kinds of ingredients for many years! At one time, I had maybe 30 bottles brewing on the shelf!
Have you tried mixing with vinegar to darken the color? The darkens after some coats of bleach and may have a different result on the darker wood with the cool aid.
Since I saw the video, I've been wanting to stain my kitchen island with the cherry Kool aid. Do you have pictures or a video of your project with the cherry stain?
DUDE!!!! I totally wanted to like this video, but you didn't do a taste test and lick each board before you cleared them! I can only give you 2 thumbs up on this one. Mucho thanks for all the stank on this one!
Came across your video about dyeing wood with kool-aid. My question is after applying the color ,could I clear coat with Thomson clear seal. Thank you for take my question. Edwin
Just curious, what do you do with all these color sample boards, after your videos? Is there a "cool, creative rainbow wood scrap upcycle spectacular" video around here somewhere?
Hi, great video, I'm planning to paint my garage door too, but the color will be different.. how did you apply the paint in between doors? Did you open it by slices and paint the in between or just simply don't apply paint I'm between? Thanks
When using alcohol, I think you have to mix with water first because the dye will dissolve in water and then you mix in some alcohol. Idk, alcohol _might_ make the water evaporate quicker but water is certainly a necessity, at least as a carrier.
I've got 2 bottles of RIT sitting out in my shop just waiting on the temps to go back up to the point I can feel my fingers after 5 minutes. Texas doesn't do cold well...at all!
What if you stained them first and then charred them? My thoughts would be that they may take on more stain. In my mind charring the wood first may release some resins in the wood that may inhibit the saturation of stain to a certain extent
Very cool. I'm guessing the pigment wouldn't have much UV strength so maybe this isn't good for outdoor applications. Not sure though would definitely appreciate a follow up on how they hold up
I would like to see the blue compared to lime flavor. And do you think it might get a bolder color if you spread the powder on the board first then went over it with a water on a sponge?
Quick question, how long did you let this dry and did you have any issues with it being tacky/sticky? I just did an ax handle this style and it’s been a few hours and it still feels real tacky
Hey brother love your videos, have been doing some experiments with food coloring and koolaid as well and I have noticed or didn’t notice if you did but did you try using vinegar with either? As my lovely and so brilliant girlfriend pointed out that they suggest you use it when dying eggs and I was actually surprised that it did make a huge difference in the color grabbing the wood, 🤣🤣🤣 but would love to get some feedback if possible. And the shirt is when you got me as a lifer because I have that shirt as well and it’s my favorite shirt to wear on the rare occasion that I go out to places that are very peopley!!! Keep doing what you do brother definitely diggin it!!!
I am a fiber artist and dye with all kinds of things including kool-aid. The reason you need vinegar is to change the pH so that the dye is accepted. Eggs and animal fiber need the acidity, wood is naturally acidic and does not.
I asked him and he said slow burn as I recall he told me you can sometimes put a bit of heat on the other side, not a burn . But sometimes it will draw that warp out . Go back and watch some earlier stuff he covers it pretty well.
The reds are my favorite. Just because red is my favorite color. However the lemonade and the orange are just perfect. They make the wood warm like a new species of wood versus being colored.
I watched both vids dye and kool aid. In your opinion what we’re more vibrant? I’m thinking dye but probably a lot easier to tell in person. Please let me know. Bumps
Ooooh yah!!! Nicely done, my friend. Back to your stank roots. I'd be curious to know if there is a difference between raw mix (packets) v the bulk Kool aid that already has sugar added. I ask bc if you were going to do a large project with Kool aid, buying 59 packets sounds crazy (*next video idea)
Well that settles it i guess...first hundo profit goes to the restorer ! BTW Nick I had to send back those black flasks, must have been a bad batch...lids wouldn't un screw without channel locks...gotta reorder...things happen
Most grape flavored drinks including grape Kool-Aid is based off the flavor of the black grape which is a very dark shade of purple that can look black at a glance
I ordered the magic erasers. Darn good price for a 50 ct! Kool Kids drink Kool-Aid, with Shrooms!! I ordered my huge 20w 2/1 bundle today with extenders etc. Burn baby burn!!! Shoot the floors on fire! 🤣
I'm curious how the mice would like chewing on it? Yes Nick I live in a rural area and them chewy bastards don't need a fruity invite. But i like the grape and the orange. Maybe the poly would shoo them away. Keep warm buddy 41 expected tue. So goodbye snow.
@@BuildDadBuild I'm still not sure. Maybe if you covered all sides they usually come outside in.unless you hear them your unaware till damage is done. Got lucky this yr only caught two. For all the folks that think peanutbutter is the best bait try some cream cheese much stickier and they can't leave it alone. Klinkies Nick
Sorry, but im going to have to put my 2 cents in here. Any kind of food dye, or koolaid is not going to hold the color for very long. I find fabric dye works much better. The uv rays tend to make color fade fast, unless the product has uv inhibitors in it. Such as fabric dye, alumalite, etc. Hope this helps save someone from the misconception.
Sorry man.. I appreciate your enthusiasm and all but I can’t take it. It all just became a bit too obnoxious after about 2 minutes of it. I do wish you well though... Later
No worries brother. All kinds of folks here! LOL If you're interested in this technique, check out Inspire Woodcraft's earlier vids, or For the Love of the Grain. Cheers

I'm going to lean towards the food dyes over koolaid, personally. Thanks for doing the experiment!
Word!

Great suggestion!
Thank you! This video is exactly what I was looking for. Just finished the wood furniture on my AK in dark cherry, looks fantastic!!

Yes
Just curious, what do you do with all these color sample boards, after your videos? Is there a "cool, creative rainbow wood scrap upcycle spectacular" video around here somewhere?
Nope. But there’s a huge pile of them in my shop. 🤣🤣
Quick question: is burning it necessary? Or can you stain it after sanding a piece of wood?
You can...but how cool is that? LOL
It does dye the wood, but it's usually much lighter in color.
Cheers
How much water did u use for each one and did u use the whole packet ?
Whole packet and a half cup of water.
Hi, great video, I'm planning to paint my garage door too, but the color will be different.. how did you apply the paint in between doors? Did you open it by slices and paint the in between or just simply don't apply paint I'm between? Thanks
My garage doors aren’t painted.

Great experiment dude. I did a similar test with RIT fabric dye, much more intense color, but like the Kool Aid, does not mix with alcohol.
I could never get RIT dye to work well...
Cheers

How ya been, buddy? How's the spray lacquer perform over time?
For small projects like this one, it works great. Larger pieces I either use Halcyon or something I can put in my paint sprayer.
Cheers
What if you stained them first and then charred them? My thoughts would be that they may take on more stain. In my mind charring the wood first may release some resins in the wood that may inhibit the saturation of stain to a certain extent
Might not do it much good. These dyes would probably decompose/burn from the heat.
Try it let's us know what results you come up with thanx
Unfortunately the dye doesn't penetrate deep enough. I've tried it in the past and the burn and brush removes the dye completely.
Cheers
Didn't believe it would work, looks awesome.
Thanks, Joseph!

What setting do u have ur restorer on? Max? 2? 3? 4?
Whatever is right below max.

@@BuildDadBuild thanks!
Very cool. I'm guessing the pigment wouldn't have much UV strength so maybe this isn't good for outdoor applications. Not sure though would definitely appreciate a follow up on how they hold up
If I was going to put it outside I'd look for a sealer with a good amount of UV resistance.
Cheers
Have you tried to blend any of your dyes with boiled linseed oil? Thanks - Steve.
I have not.
Cheers
Would you be willing to do a video on unburnt wood
I have done some in the past. The dyes don't really take to unburnt wood as well...
Cheers
Do u have to burn the wood or can I just put the color on the wood
In my experience it’s a lot lighter if you don’t burn first.
Thanks for the info
Great work Nick I like the Orange one but they all look great thanks for showing us this never knew you could do that with Kool-Aid 🍻
Thanks, Mo!
I would like to see the blue compared to lime flavor. And do you think it might get a bolder color if you spread the powder on the board first then went over it with a water on a sponge?
Not sure. Good idea though.
And I bought a bulk variety pack that didn't come with any green ones!!

What kind of alcohol do you use?
Isopropyl
The correct terms are "Hey Koolaid!" And when he comes through the wall its "Oh Yeah!".

Hey KoolAid Man! They called for him and he showed up.
Koolaid for your wood. I never would have thunk it!! :-) I love the Cherry and strawberry! And the Orange - my my!!!
Nice Nick!
Be cool to show the rests of the Kool-aid vs the other tests you've done, all side by side (i.e. unicorn spit, leather dye. Etc)
Interesting...hmmmmm
I love the look of your dyed wood. What do you do with it after it is dyed? Thinking about how it would look lasered?
Hard to laser as the surface is no longer flat...
Cheers
I really wasn't expecting those results
Me either. At all. Even in my research I found much lighter results.
Cheers, brother!
awesome experiment, im gonna take this on some pyrography/wood buring art. see if it adds something to it!

Quick question, how long did you let this dry and did you have any issues with it being tacky/sticky? I just did an ax handle this style and it’s been a few hours and it still feels real tacky
Dried overnight. Not sticky the next day.

Question I know water and moisture not good for the wood// should try to do a long board and see if it causes to make a rocking chair
Usually the heat from the torch takes out plenty of moisture so the dye is really not adding all that much.
Cheers
How do you keep the wood from warping when torching it? Every one of mine warp.
I asked him and he said slow burn as I recall he told me you can sometimes put a bit of heat on the other side, not a burn . But sometimes it will draw that warp out . Go back and watch some earlier stuff he covers it pretty well.
What Larry said!
Thanks I'll try that.
Can you do the permanent marker dye again but on burnt cedar wood, just curious on how it would look vs those you've already done.
It should look pretty similar. Cedar and pine torch almost the same.

When did you get the gun
Years ago!
What are soaking in the sub of Kool-Aid and vacuum breaker make a deeper color
Maybe...that's gonna be a lot of Kool-aid!

Could you do the same tests without burning the wood? What would happen?
The dye doesn't take as well. And who doesn't want to burn the wood!!??!
