Killer rip on the 85, used to sail Lanier 30 years ago on a H16. Quit work anytime the wind blew. In Oklahoma now, we got some wind.. got another 85 H16 this year, terrorizing the waters again at Lake Meredith. Only sailboat there. We're learning a ton from your videos. Thanks man, you're welcome here anytime
I went to buy an old H-16 a few months ago, I was on a budget and was offered a 1976 Blue hulled a Tequila Sunrise boat for a good price. I drove 3 hours and found an original owner fully covered and stored indoors! the boat had great upgrades and a nice trailer. The owner GAVE it to me!!!!!!! I am about to replace all the rigging and ready for summer!
Liked that reverse method and the "unwashed, straight out of storage" Cat. lol Would love to see more of you finding and restoring old Hobies and the problems you see.
Nothing on the internet can compare to sailing a Hobie 16 in a strong wind. That goes for windsurfing too. Lots of young people don't know what they are missing.
Bought my Hobie 16 in 1972. Sail # 1959 ! Lime Green hulls, Regatta Blue decks, light blue trampoline. White sails . Christiansen rudder blades unbreakable. I installed a main roller traveler and remote jib traveler control. Dual trapeze setup. I single handed it a lot . Sold it for more than I bought it for in 1977. Bought a Tornado 20 that year .
One of my favorite videos to date! Major respect, sailing the older Hobie cats is furthering the sport! Challenge: get out in the Atlantic on an older Hobie next
Back in Greece look up Lake Feneos Doxa .its in the mountains behind Zilocastro .A reservoir surrounded by mountains . Went up there with my Laser and all the other Lasers and Optimists from Kiato Sailing club one Easter . The wind came from nowhere then disappeared, then hit you from 180 degrees to previously 😂talk about throwing you out of sorts!
AhhHaa & wooee indeed .. a powerful thoroughbred ..always dancing on the edge of disaster ..ie sometimes somersaults ..but a BLAST .. always thought could have been 6" longer.
Always entertaining videos. Awesome. I have '76 Hobie 16. This is a great reference video and has given me some motivation to get it out again this spring. Haven't sailed the last 2 summers.🍻
I saw some 19s! Cooking that goose! well done, man... "The wind chill is effective" I bet the cold water face shots hurt at those speeds... been there 😅
Joe came to America and headed straight for a lake in Georgia to sail a 40 year old boat? Interesting choice there, a bit random lol, But I really hope you enjoy your visit and can’t wait to see where you end up next, safe travels!
I would never doubt your judgment! And honestly nick probably represents the vast majority of small cat sailors in the states, so hopefully you’ve inspired them all to get out there and give it the breans!
Maybe because I have the same vintage white hobie 16 …..with same colour sails….but this was my favourite video of your to date.!! Could be the mic you were using too, could hear you perfectly.
Love your channel! My dad and I owned the 18th 16’ ever made ! We raced it in Fleet 1 in Dana Point. I remember one time when Hobie Alter saw it, he chuckled and said that it was extra heavy because they were still trying to figure out how much glass to use (or something like that)….. I guess that’s why it always seemed slower than the other boats. Hull was blue and yellow with solid white sails and a sewn on 18. Hull was actually stamped “16” on the upright holding the trampoline…. We had a great time with it, good memories. 1982-ish if I recall correctly.
Looking at getting a cat. One uncle has a blue hulled Hobie 16 with tequila sunrise sails, and dual trapeze. Another uncle has a 1988 Tornado 20 with dual trapeze. Both have trailers. My only issue is im 295lbs and ill be doing the majority of sailing with a second person. Which would be the better boat? Im leaning towards the Tornado.
I put the main traveller out far enough so that I can sheet the main in block to block - jib traveller goes out maximum if the main traveller is out at all.
Welp…. Put that out into the uni and what do you know. It popped up for sale! I am now the proud owner of my Parents 1974 H16. Has some spongy spots on top each hull unfortunately.

Yes, next video is: what would I upgrade on this boat

Yes! I agree 100%

Wow! That would be a very cool 16 to see.
This 1984 sailed as good as a new one!
Looked like it sailed great, good job reversing it to the “beach”, rudder blades up . I’m going to do floatplane training, same concept .
Never seen that "reverse" thing before! Too cool.
Video coming soon on the topic.
Still sailing my '78 Laser. Cheers.
They built them strong back then
22:47 Hulls look as good as new after a bit of honking' and zippin'! Cracka upload, Joe! Best, Rob ^^
Thanks Rob, yes for an old boat. She certainly is as stiff as the day she came from the factory.
Good ol' lake sailing!
90 degree shifts and holes on the wind the size of Canada!
for sure, there were some big ol' shifts
Great to see you doing your thing on freshwater! I learnt in the ocean now live inland so my sailing is all about managing the crazy gusts.
I like the clean feeling of zero salt added!
One of my favorite videos to date! Major respect, sailing the older Hobie cats is furthering the sport! Challenge: get out in the Atlantic on an older Hobie next
Next time I have the opportunity i'll get out there!
The boat sure looks like she enjoyed that ride as much as you both did ! So good to see an old boat still rocking it !
They certainly built them well back then.

That bad boy got a good airing!Likin the reversin tecnique.Enjoy your trip Stateside.
Hi Jake! I love a bit of backwards.
I might make a whole backing up video.
AhhHaa & wooee indeed .. a powerful thoroughbred ..always dancing on the edge of disaster ..ie sometimes somersaults ..but a BLAST .. always thought could have been 6" longer.
Ha! Yes, slightly longer could certainly prevent a lot of swimming!

That's great. Once you're out there it's so much fun!!
That backing up trick was awesome!
We'll do some tomorrow!
Love the angles and the instructions!
Thanks!!
Indeed very good audio!
Thanks Hannie, I thought so!
I'm getting a real kick out of you in American Lakes!!!
Me too!
We sail in North Carolina and are hooked on high winds on the hobie cat!
There best way to be!
Where are you at Rucksack?
@@DialedN_07 sail on lake James most often
@rucksackcircus4328 oh wow, you're up in the mtns. We sail at Lake Waccamaw all summer. Have a good group down here
Love the pirate cat look of that H16.
Oh yeah! Hidden treasure at Lake Lanier
reversing in was cool, assume can you get some steering by moving weight back/forward on port or starboard?
Steering is limited - I'll make a video on the topic soon.
You are braver than me going out on such an old boat
I was more concerned about the temperature!
That boat can really use a pressure washer
As soon as we got back Nick took care of it. She's shiny now!
I saw some 19s! Cooking that goose! well done, man... "The wind chill is effective" I bet the cold water face shots hurt at those speeds... been there 😅
If we'd have been able to better tune the rudders I think we could have had her up to 20.
Yep, almost too cold for me!

Come to Vancouver Island.
Sooke BC
We can use my 80's hobie.
Maybe another time
Wish you came state side this summer we could have taken the old 18 out for a rip !!
Maybe next time
Joe, Love to see you in the USA. …..water temp 72 degrees, air 82 in Hilton Head , South Carolina , come visit for a ride on my Nacra 570. !!!
I'll let you know if i'm ever in the area, would love to try the 570!
46 Fahrenheit is 7.8 Celsius, pretty cold!
flippin' chilly
You might as well be in Ohio & Michigan with those temps !
Freaking awesome! Can’t wait for my first season with a similar vintage 16
Have fun!
Good old Lake Lanier. Home of Hobie Fleet 12.
great piece of water!

Wow, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
@@JoyriderTV how long is your American tour?

If you're going with more than 400lbs total. The Tornado will be better.
@@JoyriderTV copy that, thank you for the response
How long are you going to be in North America? Any plans of coming up to Canada??
For the rest of the time here i'll be in Ocean Springs Ms
Ok, make time to come up to Canada on your next North American tour.
How do you decide where to position the traveler for the main and jib?
I put the main traveller out far enough so that I can sheet the main in block to block - jib traveller goes out maximum if the main traveller is out at all.
Joe you need to make a northern swing hit up the Great Lakes !
@@JoyriderTV Thanks! Good to see what an old boat can do. Mine is a 1974 Hobie 16!
noice!
🤩
How was sailing a old girl
She was tight, heavy on the steering but still performed well.
Makes me wish i kept my dads!! So if anyone see sail #12457 lemmeknow!
I feel you.
