The force started with only 750 mem in 1835 and till india independence in 1947 consisted only 5 Bn which formed part of the civil police under the IGP of Assam. Independence of the country brought a plethora of changes & in 1947, a full fledged iG of Assam Rifles was appointed to head of force.
