- Horse photography and photographing horses can seem like the best job in the world, but if you don't know the basics of this species you'll struggle to achieve success in safety. This equine photography video is split into 3 sections for horsey beginners and covers safety considerations and tips, equine terminology for newbies and horse photography shooting tips. The timestamps for those can be found below. I hope that this video forms a great foundation for how to photograph horses in a safe and savvy manner!
It's vitally important that if you do choose to photograph horses, you do so safely and in the knowledge that these are powerful, unpredictable animals that can cause serious damage to you and others. You must keep that in mind at all times and ensure you are fully insured before heading to the yard.

One slight problem is the danger of the rear end. Usually, getting kicked, is because of surprise. The commonly suggested practice is make sure the horse knows you are behind them by talking one making noise or keeping a hand on them. Going around a horse keep either as close as possible with your hand on them. The answer to getting kicked is getting kicked very close to the leg so they more or leas shove you. If you are farther away the leg is able to get extension and acceleration and it can be inspiring.

I did have a giggle to myself about horses can move in different directions....including upwards :) and that's the kicky end :) Oh god, I have a ruptured muscle lump on my leg in the very same place!!! You know how it goes...30 years ago..."here, get on this, its perfectly safe"!! Thanks again for the video.

I shoot with a Sony a74 and have the Sony 70-200 2.8. I love this lens. I was just told by the owner of a camera store in NYC that the sigma lenses are amazing lenses and equal to Sony lenses. Much lighter and cheaper too. Just bought the sigma 35 1.4 art for lifestyle photography. He suggested the art series, said they comparable to Sony. He said with Sony we are just paying for the name. Just sharing his opinion since you are talking about the sigmas.

Thank you for this information! It just so happens that our photography club may have an opportunity to do equine photography with a local group who uses horses for therapy to individuals with special needs. Of course the staff will be handling the horses. I'm hoping we get to do this.

So glad TH-cam had one if your videos pop up! Spent all day watching. I havent picked up my nikon d500 in a year...I let covid get the hest if me I suppose. But I got it out today and messed around with it. I was curious what lens you recommend for dog sports? I do herding, agility, and disc. Just looking into better lens to get the job done

@@ThatPhotographySpot I enjoy editing other people's images, because it could be in a location I don't really shoot in, or could just be the fun of editing different dogs and their colours. I have a Hungarian vizsla so it's always the same; always a brown shorthaired dog😂

Where was this tutorial when I was shooting horses last year? 😭I could never pull the ears and she was immune to everything in the book (except for horse app noises, something I found out months after the shoot lol). Oh well, never too late to learn something new. I can't wait for the next video! Will you show how you edit horse photos or would it just be the same tutorials that you use for editing dogs?
When we can shoot horses again here, there will be a full edit!

Great video! I love to shoot free running horses and would like to have more zoom for that. I'm thinking about getting a 200-600mm or maybe even the new Tamron 50-400mm. Any thoughts on that? 🙂
I don’t have either of those lenses so I can’t advise, sorry 😕
The other thing no one mention is never, ever grab the halter by the nose piece going over the top of the nose. Fingers naturally curl into a fist shape. If the fingers are in the halter the horse could throw his head back or back up. Many horse fell trapped by a person a holding the nose piece and may jerk their head up and back. Your fingers are trapped. Always reach under the halter

I only have a 50mm 1.8 that isn’t a kit lens, how will this work?
There will be a lot of distortion in the horse (head will look extra big and chest will look too narrow). It will also be too wide and probably slow for action shots. You don't want to be too close to a horse that's galloping, that's why you want that 70-200 zoom. You can still take some really nice detail shots of horse with the 50mm (close ups on eyes, muzzles, etc.) if you have a quiet model and are experienced getting up close to horses.

Yes the 75-300 would be better for proportions, even at at the 75 end if you have a cropped camera :)
