So glad Apple didn't dump the iPad mini in this year's refresh. I bought one yesterday because I think it's great for reading. And, with the Apple News+ subscription, it's all the better.

I just picked up a Mini 5 with WiFi +Cellular.with 256GB. I also picked up the Pencil and a Magic Keyboard. I have been doing real work on it all day. For broad stokes in PowerPoint it is great to get a rough draft, the screen size fades away after about two hours. This will be my main rig for everything and jump on the laptop when I need to use web-based apps that are not touch friendly (Jira for example). This really plays well when on a plane in coach. I can work even when the jerks in front recline ALL the way back at take off. I saved some money, but took portability as the value for me. This is not the first time I have worked iPad only from a mini (I did it for two years before), but in 2012, I switched to iPad only and did that for over 4.5 years.

I upgraded from an iPad Mini 2 which I’d had for almost 4 years to this iPad Mini 5 and am completely blown away by the speed of this thing! Everything just pops up instantly. The screen is gorgeous and this review never mentions True Tone which adjusts the color intensity to the ambient light. I don’t mind the larger bezels because I’m used to them from my previous model. Absolutely thrilled with this thing!

Reasonably sized bezels give you gripping space. Very narrow bezels is a disadvantage from a usability perspective.

I have to disagree with you on the "old" design language. I prefer this design, the fingerprint scanner and the fact that the iPad mini 5 still has a headphone jack. I wouldn't buy the iPad mini 5 if it had the new design, but I will certainly buy this one.

Being using my iPad mini 2 for around 5 years! I’m buying the iPad mini 5 for sure. This is the best size for me: reading scientific papers, books, taking notes, creating mind maps, using it during the classes I’m teaching, etc.

I want bezels so I can hold the device. Not really bothered about edge to edge screens or Face ID. I’ve had the iPad mini 4 since it came out & just bought the Mini 5, it’s such a handy device to use on the go with cellular for GPS & mobile data. Phablets still don’t quite fill the gap for me & the Mini 5 is the ideal size. It’s a niche iPad nowadays but I fit the niche. I was so glad they updated because the Mini 4 was slowing down but I disagree with the reviewer it was still perfectly useable. They did the right thing in keeping the classic look but just updating the internals to keep the price down.

  • @rkneegordon6316

Actually everything you mentioned that was bad, is the reason it’s only $399. The form factor is dated, but reliable an cost effective. Bezels? Get over it. It’s a fashion statement that adds zero usability to the mini. Fast charger? They will wear out the battery “faster” and force you to replace your mini sooner, then you’ll complain about how much the battery sucks. The camera? You have an iPhone X , use that camera because it’s way better. The mini’s camera is for convince, not professional photography. All in all what you’re paying for is what Apple put inside the mini, which is what’s important..
    Thanks for another great video.
    Peace.

Just bought the Mini 5 after having two Mini 2 ipads and the difference is amazing. This sucker rocks in speed with no hesitation in doing anything. Nothing bums me out more about buying a product lags when you ask it to do something. Well NOT the Mini 5. Personally I like the older design. I was a bit annoyed my folder from the Mini 2 didn't fit the Mini 5 but only an extra $10 to fix that. Also, it drives my demanding DKI drone software with no more cpu resources messages and video lag.....a truly great product

When Apple announced the new iPad Mini, I immediately listed my 2016 9.7 inch iPad Pro on Ebay for sale and ordered the new Mini. My previous iPad was the iPad Mini 2 (which I gave to my daughter when I bought the Pro and she is still using to this day), and for the 2 1/2 years that I owned the iPad Pro, I found myself missing the smaller, more portable Mini. When I realized I could use my existing Apple Pencil on the new Mini 5, I was sold. Factoring in the money I got from selling my iPad Pro on Ebay, my out-of-pocket expense for buying the new Mini 5 (256gb, Wifi) was only around $200. I'm okay with the old school look of this device.

  • @davidjackson7405

Another group that uses the Mini is pilots. In a smaller cockpit, the size of the Mini is perfect. It's great that the frame size is the same because we sink a lot of money into mounts and other ways to hold the iPad steady. The addition of Pencil is great because pilots write stuff down all the time. I've been wanting an upgrade for a long time. Great review.

I wasn't even thinking about buying an Ipad but the other day when I saw the Ipad mini 5 I thought it was just about the perfect size and combined with the A12 chip, pencil support, etc. it's just the ideal device of this sort IMO. I don't think it's "too small" and even more importantly it's not "too big" like I consider the other options. The other options are like like laptops with detachable keyboards, the mini seems far more appropriate and useful in general as a portable "ipad" type device and not an "Ipad that is really more like a full size laptop".

i still find the new ipad5 very nice. it is NOT ugly at all. what i like about this design is that the window view is square and not round (this is one thing i feel a little bit compulsive about with the new pro) oh and the reason why you can not do a split on bigger ipad is because they are heavier. so it would be a bit off balance in your hands and there would be more risk of dropping it. beside, it is very weird to use the split even on a 9.7 as you feel your eyes need to split or they need to be more spread apart! i guess once you are good at it you do not need to look at the split keyboard. and i like that i still have the headphone jack, so the big bezel is well justified. bluetooh headphone are great but if you run out of power on a plane or any public area, you are stuck without much privacy. i still love my iphone 6s plus and i have a 12.9 pro (not the latest version-that was intentional as i needed the headphone jack) and i will be getting the mini ipad 5. i will use it a lot as my little notepad among other thing. Thanks for your great review! I love it.

First of all, there are the same gestures on the iPad than on the iPhone to show open apps, change apps and close to see the background. No double tabbing needed. I only use the button to log in, that’s all....
Plus I actually still like the bezels. With this display size you will cover a lot of screen estate with your thumb when holding it in one hand in landscape. With the bezels I only cover the bezels and the whole screen is viewable. It’s different with the bigger once of course

  • @matthewsjardine

I am buying one. Here are my reasons: 1) it is a fantastic companion to the smaller iPhone (always my phone of choice), 2) it is the perfect size to do reading, web browsing on the go, etc. I don’t enjoy doing long reading on my Mac or iPhone. 3) as someone without an iPad, there is just some things you can do on iPad that you straight up cannot do on iPhone or Mac, especially regarding Apple Pencil.
The iPad Mini is right up my alley. I am a minimalist and massive Apple fan. I am a firm believer that just because a device is old or missing one or two modern features, does not mean that it isn’t a fantastic device that will make you very happy. I use an iPhone 8 and I am very satisfied with it.

I have the iPad mini 4 and am considering the upgrade for more space and updated specs. One thing you mentioned at the beginning of your video was the iPad mini4 being slow and laggy. While I've never had those experiences, the only major negatives I had were issues where I had to force-close certain apps, and the battery will be drained if playing certain games. Beyond that, using this to just stream videos or web surfing was amazing. Not too happy that the mini 5 is only able to use the 1st gen Apple Pencil though.

    • @jadyassine8484
      @jadyassine8484 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think the 2nd gen Apple Pencil cannot charge any other way than wireless charging with the iPad Pro. Correct me if I'm wrong. They'd have had to revamp the design and add the wireless charging connector to accommodate the 2nd gen Pencil, which would have bumped the price way up, far from the attainable $399 at which the iPad mini currently starts. I'm just happy they added support for the 1st gen Pencil.

New to your channel, drawn to your earlier preview on the mini 5, you run an energetic, very well composed and creative show, great! I own the original iPad Pro 12.9. I use creative apps usually, have used the Luna Display dongle to second display it when out and about (fantastic by the way - full Photoshop on the pad - you bet). But do hesitate to bring it out for size reasons. Have a mini 2, bought used, for the purpose of drone use that I never bought in the end. But always like the size and PRAYED that Apple would release a pencil usable version, hand note taking and sketching YES. WELL HERE IT IS, and yes, I'm absolutely stoked. Ordered and waiting for delivery. You hit all the positives I know I'm going to love about it. None of the negatives apply, cables, and all the old stuff for my other devices, including iPhone, apply, so this is still my world. Thanks for the great review.........

As a multimedia device, this is my preferred size, for one-hand reading or video watching. Don’t really care about the bezels, I’m going to wrap that baby in an Otterbox (the only kid-proof case). Interesting to see if this would replace my bullet journal, with the basic pencil capability.

I bought mini 5 due to the price for note-taking and reading.. I would rather to wait until the price for ipad pro to drop so much so we can buy it. I can give mini 5 to my little sis. I refused to spend 1,000 on ipad. I'd rather to get sony A73, instead.

Great review! I was on the fence about this one, but decided to finally pull the trigger on the iPad Mini 5 Silver WiFi version a week ago. No regrets except that I wish I had gotten one sooner when it was released earlier this year. I have the iPad Pro 11 inch, but considered it a bit large to take on a trip. I love the iPad Mini for its smaller form factor and portability. Best size for media consumption, gaming, and browsing the net on the go. The specs are outrageous for what it is (matching that of the bigger iPad Air 2019) and will receive software updates for many years to come. Love the brighter screen and the Apple pencil (Gen 1) support. Yes, it is an older design, but I don't mind as it still has a headphone jack or bluetooth. I ended up getting a gold version for my mother as an early birthday gift and we really enjoyed using our iPad Minis on a trip this past weekend. Should Apple update the Mini design next year to resemble the Pro line, it will definitely have another hit in its hands, especially for those who love to travel.

How much space does iOS12 take up on the Mini? My dilemma is that the 64GB model may be a case of "making do" but the 256GB is definitely waaaay more storage than I need and the price difference between the 64 and 256GB models is pretty steep.

Bro. Love your video, but you got one key piece of info incorrect - You can absolutely do every swipe gesture on iPad Mini, iPad Air, and any other iOS 12-running iPad, even if it has a home button! Just swipe up and pause for multi-tasking, swipe all the way up to go home, and swipe up and over to switch quickly between recent apps. You don’t ever need to touch the home button except to unlock or activate Siri!

Gesture navigation? All iPads have that swipe up to go home and also the same swipe to hold multitasking as the new iPad pro’s/iPhone X line. Otherwise, I enjoyed the video.

  • @alanbio
    @alanbio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's weird not having gesture navigation, since in my iPad Pro 10.5 even still having the home button, now I do everything gesture based.
Swipe up fast to go home
Swipe up slow to show the task bar
Swipe up till the midde of the screen to open recent apps
Swipe a little up and then to the side to switch apps.
Why would Apple not standardize these gestures in all iPads in lastest iOS?

I picked one up yesterday. I was looking into a kindle dresser since I was really tired of using my iphones smaller screen to read books/comics, and my surface pro doesn’t have the app support (browser kindle is the worst to anyone in the same boat as me). I actually didn’t think anything of the iPad mini until the other day when I figured, hey, it does what I want it to do, at the size I want it to be, plus a whole bunch more. Yeah, I also agree it sucks that it doesn’t have the cool new design that my iPhone X has, but for something I just got to be a ereader/light media device, I don’t really mind. It fills a role in between my phone and my power tablet/laptop really nicely. It’s not too crazy powerful, but it’s powerful enough to do anything I want to on it.
I donno if I would use it as a iPad Pro replacement, but of all the ipads under the pro line, I think this one fills the biggest void, even more than the more expensive air version.

Do you also use the Apple Mail app instead of the third party Gmail or Outlook? Curious to learn if you are all in the default Apple Apps. I even deleted my Google Maps App and am using Apple Maps and I am happy. Let me know how many default apps you use Vs. third party and why. Thanks for the great videos. You Rock 🙌🙌🙌

Hopefully youve used it long enough to realize IT DOES have gesture support. All iPads running iOS12 and newer have the same gestures as the iPad Pro, my guess is bc Apple new they would have iPad’s with the classic design for quite some time. Don’t believe me? Swipe after reading this.
You literally do not have to use the home button at all unless you want to scan your finger.
