  • How to Install TrueNAS Scale on an Asustor NAS Drive - Step-By-Step Guide nascompares.co...
Not all Linux servers are built equally! If you are new to the world of private server storage, you might have heard about how “everything runs on Linux”. Now, that is not exactly true (with many other platforms out there with their own building blocks), but Linux still continues to be the dominant platform that most software we regularly use is built from. Network Attached Storage (NAS) is no exception and most new or relatively inexperienced NAS users can be separated into two clear categories. There are those that want to get their hands dirty, spend sensibly on a DiY system in order to take advantage of community-built platforms such as TrueNAS Scale (the Linux version of the popular TrueNAS Scale FreeBSD platform), and then there are those that are happy to pay extra for the system to arrive prebuilt, but also know that the software that it comes with can be a little more restrictive. However, it is NOT impossible to have the best of both! Today, I want to show you how to turn the remarkably affordable NAS solutions from Asustor (easily the best Value NAS in the market right now, even when the 2022 range is pretty well hardware equipped with NVMe, 2.5G, Embedded Graphics CPUs and more) into a linux based TrueNAS Scale, ZFS Powered, NAS system. It is considerably easier than you might think, is very easy to reverse and allows you to have the full customization and freedom of TrueNAS Scale, a prebuilt 24×7 designed server system and all whilst still getting exceptional value for money for the hardware. Cool right? Let’s begin the step-by-step guide.

What use cases would benefit from TrueNAS over the manufacturer supplied OS?
For example, is the memory footprint of TrueNAS larger or smaller than ADM?
Or are there useful programs not included in the manufacturer's app store, but available through TrueNAS?

It's about more control over the hardware I think.

I have 2 x truenas systems, core and scale. Tried scale on my asustor flashtor 6. But went back to ADM. Scale is good, but ADM is so versatile, I went back to it.

I'm in the same situation, I like the idea of using plex if my network is down and using the hdmi port + remote. Came back to this video just to get to the 30:00 on reverting back to the embedded drive.

@NasCompares I have a old fx 8350 system with 8 sata ports 32 gb of ram and 2.5 gb nic would this be better than buying one of these devices for a truenas scale build? BTW I love your videos I just ran across your channel last night keep up the great work

Would just install TrueNas on the USB stick! The operating system lived in memory anyway. For security simply 2x as Mirro. Total waste of NVME slot and its speed

So, I have a BeeLink AMD 5600k mini pc and 3x 4TB SSDs lying around, from another project. Can I put these together for a quick and easy and free NAS? The one downside I have upfront is that the mini pc doesn't seem to expose additional SATA ports, so I will probably be relegated to USB 3 connections for the SSDs, still worth it and would TrueNAS be a reasonable OS for this?

Any recommendations on how to get the fan to respond to the temperature? I tried this previously and had trouble with the NAS getting hot. Also, the LCD for the Asustor becomes useless (continuously displays a boot message). We need a few more hacks to make this really viable but it otherwise works just fine.

isn't the lack of ECC ram an issue?

hi maybe you can help me. I have the T6-423 from Terramaster. I would like to install Truenas but I have a problem. The installation was no problem. But the BIOS does not remember the setting for UEFI NVME Drive Priorities "Enabled". When I reboot I can't boot from NVME. Do you have a solution?

You mentioned ‘installing an ssd in one of the drive bays’ .. if possible, could you direct me to some further information. I;d like to setup the system with dual 8tb drives for archiving and 4xnvme for video editing and working drives.. worse case scenario, I would use 3*8TB drives and could use the 4th as you described…
