It never was clear whether Sean's punch actually was the cause of his death or whether his dad died of an unrelated preexisting condition. You can drop dead of an aneurysm without being punished, and his dad also was a construction worker who was at work when he died the day after. But Sean thought he killed him, which explains his mental state.
