    Such Beautiful scenery!! It's almost a shame that NOBO hikers need to get here so early because this must just be spectacular after the snowmelt when the veg starts greening up... many thanks for letting us peer over your shoulders and take this journey through your eyes....

    Beautiful day! I'm following some guys that are a bit ahead of you, what a difference a few days makes with the snow melt.

    Is that sign at the sawmill pass junction?
    I remember coming up in 2017, and encountering a group which had turned around at the woods creek ford to the JMT/PCT. (No bridge - the suspension you crossed is 4 miles down river.)
    I camped close by worried I might have the same result. However, as usual if you can get up early to beat the days melt it temporarily reduces the flow levels making it safer to cross.
    I remember getting across easy, stoked to see the highway sign and made my way up/over pinchot into the upper basin. (The Kings watershed you crossed to get to Mather thats accessible via Taboose.)

    The Woods Creek bridge was much more fun when it had wooden slats for the deck with a few broken or missing. A feel bad for everyone who no longer gets to experience that.

    Nice shots esp of the approach. I always try to recall those landmark peaks on the ascent which has been June 4 me. So much fun glissading 👏. Crossing creeks with snow banks on both sides can be tricky. Reminder: label ur gear (name, phone #) for easier return.

      Marg & I are still rocking trailrunners and microspikes! We have crampons if the passes are really intense / icy!

    Snowy/Icy Mather Pass without an ice axe? ....yikes.

    • @larkangel6593

      I know, right?
      For may hiking i used a whippet + 1 trekking pole as my poles, plus a regular axe
      I once let a hiker who didn't have an axe use the whippet up Mather. (Keeping the regular axe for myself.
      Not ideal but better than just poles. We all made it safely.

      @MaxZomboni หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      She doesn't use it anyway. At this point she was still glissading without it. That's probably how she lost it. I have never seen anybody glissade with their ice axe on the back of their pack.

    • @RachandDanOutdoors
      @RachandDanOutdoors  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Rach was able to cross Mather Pass with just trekking poles because she’s an absolute beast. The rest of us had our ice axes ready.

    • @RachandDanOutdoors
      @RachandDanOutdoors  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@MaxZombonisometimes if the glissading is casual, we’ll just leave them on our packs. Our friend picked up her ice axe and returned it, so we’re back in action!

    • @larkangel6593
      @larkangel6593 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@RachandDanOutdoorsyou guys made it to mammoth?
      The axe isn't a measure of fitness/strength, it's an insurance policy
      I once fell sideways on whitney, sliding down headfirst. Classic land on your axe, let it catch, swing you around like a boat on anchor and came to a stop
      Another time the descent was too icy for plunge stepping, and way too fast for glissading, so I self arrest glissaded the whole way down
