  • After completing a delivery to a local industrial estate in Paignton, I decided to drive through Paignton town centre and along the sea front before heading back north and home.
    Paignton - Seaside town situated on the south coast of England in between Brixham and Torquay, known as the English Riviera in the county of Devon.
    Friday afternoon - 2nd December 2011

    God I love Paignton 😂 It’s so strange seeing it when it was 2011, that a Tesco is still standing there 😂 Can’t get over that “Sugazone” has been there since 2011

    Married nearly 55 years now and we courted in Paignton in'57. She lived in Palace Avenue and I would call at a set time to the 'phone box just by the Palace Theatre. Paignton was such a sophisticated town then unlike the tackitown it has become. All holiday makers arrived on the train.

    @TransMuir65 I used to come here with my dads touring caravan when the kids were small, always loved it and always had a great time. My 1600 Cavalier used to struggle mind pulling the caravan up Telegraph hill, happy days.
    I had a warm glow when I drove through the town centre, its barely changed one bit in all those years, just wished I'd got here some hours sooner, then I would have parked up and had a proper look round.
    Thanks as always Andy... Take care :-)

    @Jobergg Yes they flash constantly, they are called "Belisha Beacons" and warn motorists that they are approaching a Zebra crossing. That line is not electrified, and Im sure only diesel powered passenger trains use it but I could be wrong on that one.

    Nice story thanks for sharing. I think what you said echos all over the country, my own town was once a lovely place to live, sadly now like so many other towns, its become rundown, empty shops, concrete monstrosities where there was once beautiful looking buildings...and so on. Sign of the times no doubt. I think it will return one day, but its a long way off from now..lol Thanks

    Yes that large building came as a bit of a shock to me, especially since I haven't visited Paignton for many years, I still remembered how it looked in my minds eye, I got quite a surprise when I saw that large building blocking the view of the sea, such a shame, more short sightedness on some planners part no doubt.

    @robmasterman Many thanks as always Mr Bob, Paignton is a nice seaside kind of town, I was pleasantly surprised myself by how many people seemed to be milling around, I half expected it to be totally dead there, due to the holiday season being over by now.

    @Bevoin1970  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @hunterxf382 Wow!! comments don't come any better than this one. seriously!. I do all this mostly for the fun side of it, but I know there are people out there, who for whatever reason don't get around & see different towns and cities like I do, so by doing this, Im taking those people along too, but from the comforts of their own homes. I always aim for good quality film/camera positions etc. so to get your excellent feedback, makes me feel I've done a good job.
    Very much appreciated
    Paul :-)

    How does the yellow lamps work at the zebra crossing at 0:52? Are they always flashing like that?
    At 3:00 you crossed a railroad, is that for diesel and steamtrains only? I could not see any power line!
    Thanks for the ride:)

    Thanks for the vid. I was born in Paignton further back than I`ll admit to, and haven`t been back for years, so it`s good to remind me of how small and fast everything is. Does everybody drive like that over there.... After 40 years in Canada I`d have hung a right on the red at Hyde Road (for the uninitiated - provided one stops at the red light first, one can make a turn into the junction if it`s clear. Something that got me a lot of beeps when I forgot and did that back in the UK several years ago). Still, it`s a reminder of what a friend had called a 3rd-rate tourist town - which got my back up. But then again, after all, it is. Sorry. Thanks, anyway, bud. Glad you can get around and entertain us nostalgicals, nostalgicians, or whatever(!). I shall search your vids out again shortly.
    (And for Bri cop65 - yup, my friends ran that store 50-odd years ago, and I`d like to know, too).

      +pwblackmore Thanks for a great post regarding my video. Its always nice to listen to tales from locals even if you do live in Canada these days. And believe it or not, since I made this film back in December 2011, I've never been sent back since, so on that note Im long overdue a return trip and an updated Paignton video. :-)

      Why don't you come back and live in the UK

    • @pwblackmore
      @pwblackmore 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Britain is small, crowded, and cities are dirty. People talk (sorta) funny (except proper Devonians!), roads are narrow and cramped, there's class system and class prejudice - and internal prejudice : the South hates the North and vice versa - and a small-minded 'island' mentality. Service is poor or begrudging, prices are steeper, and gasoline/petrol is twice what I pay. People whinge... (Aussie joke "You can tell when a plane-load of Pommies has landed - the engines are switched off, but you can still hear the whine"). Hard to imagine Britain was once Great, now everyone is working as little as they can get away with. On the plus side - the countryside is beautiful, the historicity of buildings is priceless, the quality and types of food is vast, and the proximity to Europe is definitely a plus... this province alone I live in (BC - British Columbia) is 3.8 times the area of the UK: you folks can drive from London to Rome through several countries, whereas I'd still be in the same province (and see nothing but fir trees!).

    The greatest vandalism performed upon Paignton is that stack of bricks they call a cinema. Fifty years ago one walked from the level crossing to the sea front and it was open and inviting. When you got there you were presented with a wide open expanse of grass. Ruined by people with pet fancies.

    @bibula83 At the start of the film the double yellow lines you see in the gutter /kerb area on the left, are for NO Parking! you see them everywhere in towns in england.You get fined if caught parking on them. We have wardens that check for illegal parking.
    We also get double white lines in the centre of the road in dangerous areas, meaning NO overtaking, otherwise I think just your usual normal dotted lines.
    Thanks bibula. :-)

    @silverstartrucker One of my Pet hates is bad roads, drives me nuts, al that shaking and rattling, no good for the camera mount. The only thing I noticed since I was last down there, were those raised portions they have on/across roads these days, where if you don't notice them, you end up flying up in the air, like massive speed humps, something else that I hate. Im on my soap box again...:-) Thanks Arthur

    @Corfate Yeah its ok, you get stressed out with traffic at times, your racing against the clock at other times, people give you rollickings for being late, even though its not your fault..ha ha, its a game called blame the driver... but you do get to see many parts of the country you wouldn't have seen otherwise, so overall I enjoy it. I do miss working with other people though, micky taking etc, its a lonely job being a driver. :-)

    @JKRPDM Well spotted by you, I never noticed that before..ha ha - It could well be one of those small medical walk-in centres for minor injuries and problems, quick-fix kind of injuries. You just go along, book yourself in and wait to be seen by a doctor or nurse with your ailment. Hopefully they can fix you up without needing hospital treatment, Im guessing all this, I don't know for sure... They seem common now in the UK
    Hope this helps :-)
