Martha Bolton has had a distinguished career as a comedy writer, primarily for Bob Hope. Her book, "Dear Bob", featuring correspondence between Mr. Hope and the hundreds of American military personnel he kept in touch with over the years, is absolutely fascinating. It was an honor having Martha on our show to promote this wonderful book.
A patriot comic was Bob Hope; strange but I took for granted his performances were written by other talents and not him. None like Bob Hope or Jack Benny these days.
Bob Hope was a multi layered topic. Bob Hope could have spoken against the Vietnam war and never did. American hero I think not. He was a world class womanizer and cheated on Delores every chance he could get. Bob Hope was a phenomenal talent but he was mailing it in by 1965. By the 1980s he was pretty terrible on tv with no real wit or satire. Horrible. Johnny Carson despised Bob Hope and he gave him nothing during his appearances on his show. Bob Hope was a terrible cheat and to ignore that is just flat out wrong. He harassed starlets and women constantly. I don’t think Bob hope staying on sidelines during Vietnam speaks well of him.
