Spool pins can be intimidating to learn at first but with practice and paying close attention to what the lock is telling you they can start to become quite easy and you will start to enjoy them. At some point, you will start to feel security pins are easier to SPP due to their heightened feedback than standard pins.
Just remember to follow these steps, and practice, practice, practice, and you will be surprised to see what you can get open in a few months down the road!

Hey i just order some picks and I have a old deadbolt I wanted to learn on but after gutting it I learned all 5 pins have spools. Would it be fine learning on it or should I go buy a standard pin lock to learn first.

Yeah most spool pin guides out there just say "sometimes you will end up dropping pins but that's okay" and they don't go into detail of the true binding order, so I really appreciate this video

Even though I am a veteran picker with over 10 years of experience,I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for putting together and uploading tutorials like this,because when I first got into the hobby/trade(2005-2006) there was VERY little useful/easy to understand information pertaining to the subject online and due to that it took me longer than it should have for me to get the fundamentals down pat.For instance the first book I every purchased "The Secrets of Lock Picking" by Steven Hampton,was loaded with all sorts of misinformation(e.g never explained that there was a binding order and just said to pick from back to front)and while the info contained in the MIT guide to lock picking was accurate,it was quite lengthy and verbose,and presented the theory of how a pin tumbler and picking works in a manner which made them difficult for me to grasp

Outstanding explanation here. You have a great understanding of how they work and the way you share this is simply fantastic. Keep up the good work. I must say, when I first started picking, those spool pins really got me frustrated, now that I understand it I find them very easy to deal with. Like you mentioned here, slow down and figure out the binding order.

What a great video. This is the missing link between everyone and fast pickers. Its a memory deal, I always thought it was only picking skill/tension skill honing. LPL always goes 1-6 front to back every time... Hows he doin that? I was "not sure what was holding me up right now"? but I think you nailed it

Yet another great video. I was wondering where I could get a tention wrench for top of key way . I have seen many on ebay and not one had one in. I have a few locks and am struggling getting tention wrench in.

Very well presented! As a noob I’ve heard a lot of the terms but never really knew concretely how the spools could effect the picking progression. Do you have an equivalent lesson on serrated pins? Thanks!
John Mccormick My Lock Picking Home School is a progressive lesson and unfortunately I haven't got to serrated pins yet. :(
But what helps most is lift one click at a time and move on to the next binding pin. They are easy to overset and are much harder than spools.
Check out my video on reverse picking though, if you have a lock with all serrated they can be easily taken advantage of.

It is something you have to learn as you are picking the lock. There is no great way to figure it out a head of time

when you change the pins do you also change the binding order or is it constant? is it related to the pins or the case and cylinder?

I startet with lockpicking some weeks ago (but would inform my self and watch lockpickinglawyer, bosnianbill, locknoob ect for a long time now and already bought some good stuff from the brands sparrow and multipick. But never had the time to practice
But now thanks to corona i have the time!) finally bought some locks and now iam triyng to open a lock every day

my question is: given, * i will pick this lock only once. (maybe a challenge lock, maybe forgot my key in the house) * this is the first time i am going to pick this lock. how should i proceed to establish a binding order? can i establish a binding order? (given this is my first time picking this lock?) thanks for sharing.
Marty Hastings you can but it takes some time and a lot of mental note taking. For example you need to know which pin you are hitting when you start to drop everything and you need to realize everything up to that point may have been correct and you'll start to experiment until you know which pins work and which ones don't.
Ok so if I pick a lock and note (or remember) its true binding order, what would I do with that information?
If I repeatedly pick the same lock then it will make it quicker each on subsequent attempt, but why would I be repeatedly picking the same lock?
When you practice picking locks it is not best practice to always pick the same locks because you do not want to develop muscle memory. So, I would not recommend always picking the same locks. But learning the true binding order is helpful to get you through the lock you are on. Imagine you are trying to pick a high security lock but you are having trouble getting it on video. You will probably end up picking this lock 20 times before you can catch it on video. This is where this can be very helpful.

Zachary Lagler mine can be quite temperamental but then you see some people being able to rake it even using top of the keyway tension somehow LOL
