    I lived there for some 5 months in 1983, 4 years after the last significant volcanic activity. I was a medical student at St.George's University School of Medicine in Grenada and we were all required to spend one semester of clinical work at the hospital in Kingston. On an excursion a group of us climbed to the rim of La Soufriere where we picnicked; there was an ash dome in the caldera which smoked. The air was filled with intermittent sulfur smells and there were areas of yellow sulfur all about on the ash dome and elsewhere in the caldera. No one ventured down into the caldera as the walls were nothing but loose crumbly volcanic material and there was no clear area where you could see a way out. The concensus was that if you went in you'd have to get rescued to get out. From the rim I looked out to the sea and there was just enough haze so that you could not really see the line between the sea and the sky. A sailboat was out there and and it looked as though it was sailing from the sea right into the sky. It was magic - Iike Nod or Buffet's Jollyman. I have a photograph. A great memory.
    Some years later MTV did a short series where some people climbed into the caldera and camped overnight out on the flats aside of the ash dome. It's a wonder they were not overcome by the sulfur gasses. Bet when the wind is right those smells blow away from you. I've been told that the smell is sulfur dioxide and when it hits the water in your respiratory system it turns to mild sulfuric acid: not something you want to breath for very long. Seems they climbed out without a problem. That was then; it must be hell there now. The Vincentians were kind and charming people; my prayers are with them. May they be safe and may their island recover quickly.

      I feel it for the animals as well. They are even more helpless than humans. In disasters the focus is always on human life first, but thankfully there are people who also take the value of animals' lives and wellbeing into consideration in times of crisis. Maybe not as many as there are offering human assistance, but I send positive vibes to the animal rescue teams. May you receive the supplies and man/womanpower necessary to alleviate the distress. May ALL living beings in St. Vincent receive the help needed for healing and recovery.

People running but not too fast to get away from it. In my dreams my second daughter said mommy please pray for us please Some of these ppl who was running we're my family members. God have mercy... The amount of material that came out of the Soufriere volcano and covered St. Vincent and Barbados, plus what fell in the sea must amount to millions of tons. Which, in theory, should leave a massive void below. The crater itself never looks big enough for the amount of material that it loses. I'm curious to know what takes the place of that void. Perhaps there's a scientist out there who can explain. Thanks.

      Inside the earth is a molten semi liquid substance called magma which is melted rock, from activity of the earth moving, pressure builds up around volcanos which acts as a vent to release the pressure.theres so much magma in the earth that the space will be filled again after an eruption but with alot less pressure.

    • @fintonking7525
      @fintonking7525 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. That makes sense... Sort of!! So basically, it is a sort of pressure valve that opens up when the pressure build-up from the moving magma gets too high. Sounds logical.

The weight of the ash has caused the roofs of houses to collapse inward, huge rocks has destroy property and bridges, closest to the volcano.

"A humanitarian crisis is defined as a singular event or a series of events that are threatening in terms of health, safety or well-being of a community or large group of people." This situation is a volcano erupting (natural disaster event) and that that event is displacing a large number of people, harming countless domestic and wild animals and livestock, and more.
