One I always tell students to ask: "Of your graduated PhD students, at what point did you realize they were ready to graduate?"
It establishes early on your goal and a benchmark to start with the end in mind, and sets the expectations early.

I worked at a great lab as an undergrad (honest, good funding, benefits, people were friendly and rooted for each other's success) so when I graduated and interviewed for other lab positions I had no questions at the end of the interview bc I thought most labs would be like this. Now that I've been in a 'not so good' lab, I have a TON of questions I can ask to get an idea of the PI's mentoring style, trust in their staff/grad students, commitment to their research, even things like health insurance! There are some PhD programs don't offer it!! Some of them make you pay out of pocket for conference expenses!! This video gave me more ideas, and I'm in psychology as a post-bac. Thanks you making this content!!

So helpful! I have a scheduled meet with my supervisor this week itself. Thanks for sharing such resourceful questionnaire.

I am 16 years old (a high school junior) and this video has absolutely no relevancy to my current life, however I find it fascinating! Never too early to start thinking about the distant future, though… Lol

Me watching these videos hours before my meeting with a potential PhD advisor. Thank you so much for sharing. Sometimes we are overwhelmed and scared that forgot the basis of what to ask. Fingers crossed. Thank you

Love your videos Andy, immensely helpful. Is it wise to ask some of these questions during a PhD interview though?

I didn’t find this video before my potential supervisor chat two days ago 😔 though she was very engaging and seemed passionate about her ongoing research and funds. She was also open about current situation of losing funds and assured me that it wouldn’t affect me. She was also open to me being connected with her current PhD student. So, I hope it was a good sign? Would it be okay though to ask expectations later on during our communication?

Great video! Do you think this is applicable for post docs closing their next lab? Or is the criteria somewhat different?

I'd certainly be asking similar questions for a postdoc position too.
