How I Upsized A Bodycon Dress | Coolirpa

  • In this video I upsized a bodycon dress to fit my aunt! The chest fit perfectly but the skirt was too tight.
    For everyone asking: I sewed the sequins using a regular needle that came with the machine (my aunts machine worked fine and my machine had no problem but it might be different for you). And since the dress is stretchy, I sewed with a zigzag/stretch stitch. If your dress is not stretchy then just sew with a straight stitch. I didn’t need to remove the sequins before sewing. I also sewed the triangles on BOTH sides of the dress, not just one side lol. Hope this clears up some things!
    My aunt's sewing machine I mentioned:

      You could also test the amount of stretch that your fabric has and use a diagonal to measure an equal stretch on both sides, fold on the side and cut or, cut individual pattern pieces by shoving both pieces (like shoes). the 2th one is only when the pattern or colour won't change direction.
      Lots of love

    You always show how to take a bigger size and make it into a smaller size. This was amazing to show the opposite! It is so hard to find a perfect fit when ur a plus size because there are so many different shapes. This just shows that plus size doesn’t have to wear boring or plain. We can feel sexy too!

      S R agreed in the fabric match, sometimes I’ll do a solid block as a design feature for up sizing my clients. I do a lot of bridal and I often times have had to upsize a bridesmaid that fit pregnant before the event, but after the dresses were ordered. For that I just pray that one of the other girls is short so I can have hem leftovers. Lol

      I thought this too! Thought maybe an alternative could be to use a solid block fabric of rose gold sequins, or even if that was tricky, another option could be to order a second dress to use (but in some cases would be pricey!)

    • @alaskacosplay
      @alaskacosplay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that’s brave indeed. A yard of fabric if stretchy can make a basic bodice with short sleeves or be an overlay to a structured bodice. If its a non stretch, its gonna be a massive bow with tails and it’s probably gonna have stiff interfacing with wire to make the bow stand on its own.

    • @nimeryaspawnbrd1049
      @nimeryaspawnbrd1049 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      a tip that helped me a few times, it's easy to do, maybe not so easy to explain in a youtube comment...
      if you can't find such a perfect match and don't feel like color blocking, opt for a fabric that looks matching enough (i.e. same hue, no sequins, or a shade of the hue, as in an ombre effect, long story short: a different fabric that can look like part of the "original" design, so that the final work will seem "on purpose" instead of a last minute alteration) and realize a sort of train in the back
      it's easier than it seems, basically is the same technique shown in the video: you cut the wedge as a very tall trapezoid instead of a triangle, and insert it to give more room for curves
      but instead of inserting it in the side seams, you gather it a little on top (not too much: you always want to avoid bulks and puffs in plus sized dresses) and insert it in the center back
      it can be done with two or three smaller wedges, for a more elaborate look
      I hope it makes sense and helps :)

    Bless your sweet heart! I too find the worst part of buying plus sized clothes is that the models' bellies are usually flat as a pancake and in real life that can be far from the truth. So it's really tricky. A person can't always go up a size or the top might be too baggy. So you've really helped a lot with this common problem!

      @@TheCookieArt From what I understand, sometimes those models are a smaller "plus" size, or a fashion plus size, and wear padding to get that "plus size silhouette." e.g. padding a size 12 model to a sz 16 shape but in an hourglass figure way. There are definitely articles on this that are googleable and will probably have more knowledge than what I vaguely remember from an article I read a while ago.

    You nailed it! I didn't realize until you said it that a lot of plus-size fashion is just an upsized version of the design meant for a much different body shape.
    No wonder I never felt like store bought stuff looked good on me. My shape (plus size apple) wasn't considered in the design.
    I always felt something was wrong with my shape instead of thinking why aren't designers designing for my shape?

    • @slbarbieri1725
      @slbarbieri1725 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Because plus size bodies range where we all put on weight differently. Bigger or smaller boobs, wider or bulkier hips only at the bottom, tummy rolls or round pooch, big butts or very flat butts, just big thighs or just heavy legs all the way down. It's a big range! So designers just design for an average.

    • @kierafinneke5828
      @kierafinneke5828 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Kory's World I think there ARE designers, but there’s also Chairmen, CEOs, CFOs, and others who have such a negative view of things and don’t think about the end goal - even from a business perspective. So, practical designs that would look gorgeous get axed in favor of shapes that would look better for a size 1-3 becauseeee the people deciding these things aren’t designers and have no idea what the heckers they’re doing but still want to be overly involved and make decisions based on what they’ve always done instead of taking a “risk” that would more likely than not work.
      Really, it’s just bad business. But I ain’t the only one who’s said that and I won’t be the last 🙄 I mean, this was like half a yard of fabric more it wasn’t even expensive??? Idk. I just don’t know. Designers need to stop being suppressed.

      For arms, consider under arm gussets. Basically adds a square of fabric into the under arm. This is a super popular historical method of garment construction that has fallen out of favor, but is really useful. Hardest part is fabric matching - using a different complimentary fabric (CF) can make it look more intentional, particularly if one incorporates some oft that CF to other parts of the shirt/dress (along the hem, collar, add a pocket; something to make that fabric look like part of the design).
      This pattern uses 2 triangles such that sewing becomes straight seams, but can also be done by adding a square.
      www.elizabethancostume.net/smockpat/sewsmock.html
      There are also videos if you google ‘how to add under arm gusset’
      If the shirts have seams down the back, you take them in along those (or create seams and take it in down the back). Taking in is almost always easier than letting out - due to fabric matching.

    • @peachymanaangel
      @peachymanaangel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sleeves are tricky, increasing the biceps is one way to do it, look at how they adjust for muscular arms. Or as others have commented under arm gusset (best altering of a store bought garments), or making a bishop sleeve which will have gathers at the top of the shoulder. I understand your struggles I have very large arms, and smaller rounded shoulders that making fitting sleeves into proper fitting armholes next to impossible. If you want to make your own you shirts, you can look into drafting your own pattern from measurements. I did this for a skirt, it’s the only base pattern I will use now. Good luck!

    this was an awesome video! love seeing how to make something into a bigger size because I find it's a lot harder than making something into a smaller size. also I really appreciate how respectful you were of your aunt, like thanking her for letting you make this video. it's great to see family being courteous to each other

    • @SherylFZsmom
      @SherylFZsmom 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for making this. I'm constantly having to resize certain parts of my clothing because if it "fits" right in one part, invariably it is too tight, or loose in another. I pretty much don't buy dresses because of this. Thank your aunt, too. Its much easier to see the changes on a real person than an illustration, or just being told. Lucky her to have a niece to help her rock that dress. awesome.

    • @katherinejoan9566
      @katherinejoan9566 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always found it's harder to downsize something than to upsize it lol because for upsizing you do some variation of this technique (finding fabric can be tricky but I've never had problems looking online) but downsizing you have to work with what's there and make sure the lines of the garment don't get crumpled when you gather or dart. And don't get me started on working around sleeves. AAAAAAAH.

  • @LindaKaizer
    @LindaKaizer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Wow, that was quite a difference. I really like these kinds of videos. Making a clothing tighter is a lot easier to improvise than expanding it.

    Wow, what a difference she looks gorgeous. Good on her for wearing a bodycon dress, I know a lot of plus-size women that are very self-conscious of there body. I'm really happy you did a plus-size video because most women that are plus-size don't like their body's. You are encouraging all those women out there that they can still DIY clothes to make them fit to how they like it, help them feel happy with your body and make them just beautiful.

      PLEASE DON'T!! It (involuntarily) promotes fast fashion and that's really bad for the people making it in terrible conditions, for the environment and for people who waste their money on them!! Perhaps thrift a really cheap (evidently poorly made) garment and then transform it but PLEASE don't promote apps like Wish, Shein or any of the like >.

    May I compliment you on how you speak? You are very clear and you say every word very clearly. I enjoy that so much. You pronounce words completely. I love hearing people narrate and speak, but sometimes they mumble or they just don't completely pronounce a word so it is less enjoyable to listen to. I can follow you so easily, even though you are doing very complicated things, because of how clearly you communicate and speak to us while you show what you are doing. Thank you so much for that.

      Tricia Maestre yes the matching sequins helped disguise it well! And we didn’t want to take in or add any more to the bodice because it was a perfect fit already which is why I did triangles since the problem is mainly the legs 😊
