    Materials: Esterbrook 356 nib and McCaffery's penman's ink
    I got the guide sheets from John Neal Bookseller. The link to the paper is

    The paper has a tendency to bleed and only works with McCaffery's Penman's ink.

    I went to a very old fashioned strict Church of England infant school and we were taught this style of writing when I was nine years old.
    I remember copying out over and over again letter after letter until I mastered this style of writing.
    The teacher was most insistent that without being able to this beautiful style of writing you were useless and this was an era where you were judged on your handwriting skills especially in Britain.
    I'm over 50 years old, but occasionally I have to write on a board at work for presentations at work and I am always complimented on my lovely copperplate handwriting. THANKYOU to all the strict teachers I had!

      When I first started working in a bank in the 1980s I was fascinated by some of the early ledgers kept in our strong room, not only because of their age but also the beautiful copperplate handwriting they contained. One of the older staff members, an assistant manager, had similar handwriting yet he used a ballpoint pen and was able to write quite fast. It is an art and pleasing to the eye.

    Each time I watch your videos I learn something new! Your capitols are 3-units high while your ascenders are two units high (as are your descenders). That's very cool to me. What I cannot replicate though is the flourish on your opening "Th" which brings the loop of the "h" a whopping 6-units high! Drawing a perfectly straight line 6-units down the page is quite a feat sir! Bravo!

    Hello, Can you please tell me the name of the type of paper you're using? It looks like what I would call "grid paper", but I have never seen this with the diagonal line in the squares. Thank you very much. Your lettering is beautiful, truly a work of art. I wish I could write like that, but I find it difficult to increase and decrease the pressure with my flex pens to achieve the variation of line widths. I know ... practise, practise, practise. Thanks again.

Thank you

    • @scwChuck
      @scwChuck  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the video I'm using a Esterbrook 356 nib and an oblique pen-holder, both of which can be bought from John Neal Bookseller.
      Here is the link for the nibs. www.johnnealbooks.com/prod_detail_list/s?keyword=pointed+pen+nibs.
      Here is the link for the nib holders. www.johnnealbooks.com/prod_detail_list/s?keyword=penholders
      You'll also need some ink manufactured specifically for dip nibs. I find that the "Higgins Eternal" Ink and the line of McCaffery's Inks work quite well.
      I would watch some of Joe Vitolo's video's on youtube for help in leaning the script.

      i am grateful for ur reply Chuck but can i bother you again with a question? if u permit me, i would like to ask what paper would be good for inks. i want plain white paper, one that would be thick enough to not allow ink bleed. Willl a sketchbook be good for that?

    The trouble I find, is that my lines are not as smooth as yours? especially on the up/thin parts of the writing? any tips?

    • @scwChuck
      @scwChuck  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes quite a bit of practice and control to make consistent hairlines when writing the script. The most important thing to remember is not place too much pressure on the upstrokes, as the lines will tend to be jagged.

    It's a problema with my Nib, my ink or my paper? Thanks for your time !

    • @scwChuck
      @scwChuck  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you removed the varnish from the nib before using it? If not, removing the varnish by placing the nib under a match for a few seconds, or boiling it for a minute should help you write for at least a few letters at a time.

    Hi,
    And thank you for the upload of your beautiful writing skills. I have heard that the oblique makes it easier to write because you can see where you are going as you write, do you think that is fair?
    Take care.
    mrbluenun

    • @scwChuck
      @scwChuck  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t really help seeing where you are going, as much as helps writing on an angle. Since copperplate is written on a slant, a regular pen holder will make a slightly jagged line.
      This article by Dr. Joe Vitolo explains the oblique pen holder more fully.
