    Great video. I had my AX100 delivered earlier this week. Still no regrets after seeing your review. I wanted a camera especially adapted for low light shooting. It appears I've made the right choice. The advanced image stabilization of the newer models would be nice but you can't have everything. Been using a GoPro black for almost a year. Good at what it does but no stabilization or zoom. Looking forward to the full camcorder experience.

    In 2016 I watched this video as part of my camera decision making journey. I eventually purchased both the AX53 and AX100 and am glad I did. The AX 100 is clearly the better camera in good light down to well lit events. The manual controls work brilliantly and it is a very likeable camera. However there is a correction to be made on something said in this review. Like most people, you assume the larger sensor of the AX100 means better low light performance. In fact the AX53 is generally better. Why is that? - mostly because while the sensor is smaller it has less megapixels meaning the pixel size is close to the AX100’s pixels, plus the lens is one stop faster. It is also a more recent BSI sensor which also helps low light performance.
    Another thing to correct is that the BOSS system is the best available. In fact the ball stabilisation on the Panasonic VX1 is just as good. The Panasonic VX1 gets very little attention but should be considered in any buying decision. It has a wider lens than the AX53, and is slightly better in low light, plus it has stabilisation that works really well. It is also slightly smaller than the AX53, ad the VX1 is cheaper to buy. It represents better value for money.

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Panasonic has no viewfinder if that matters when you shoot outdoors.

    I'm currently also looking on the Sony AX-53 and at same time the Panasonic HC-VX1 - Would you have any comments on the AX-53 compared with the HC-VX1 ?

      I have not used the Panasonic, however, looking at specs, the AX-53 slightly beats the Panasonic in everything but still photos.
      The AX-53 has less total number of pixels, HOWEVER, both have the SAME SIZE SENSOR. So the number of pixels crammed into the same space is about double on the Panasonic. One of the nice things about the 53 is it uses LARGER Pixels, which do better at capturing low light.
      53 also has an eye piece, which I didn't think I'd ever use, however, It has come in handy on a good number of occasions when I did not want the screen light interfering,.
      Looks like the panasonic has some software features for streaming or connecting to a phone that the 53 does not. Looking at everything overall, I'd still personally go with the 53. It has been 6 years since I did this review video, I've had my 53 since this video, and I still use it regularly.
      With the improvement of phone cameras, I do use my phone a LOT more now. My only complaint with keeping up with the times, which isn't likely solved by any possible software update, on either cameras, would be h.265. These cameras still use the less cpu intensive h.264. H.265 could cut the data usage in half. One of the other reasons I use my pone more. With a specific app, I can record in h.265 at 120mbit, which is the rough equivalent of recording in h.264 at 240mbit.

    I don't get why they still worry about pixel count for still images. Just give us a sensor with 4k resolution and leave them as big as possible. We're long past the point where simply upping the pixel count is gonna make a difference to the quality of a photo. And anyone who cares about quality, is never gonna be taking photos with a camcorder! Give us the best VIDEO quality, and we're happy! And quit loading them with features we're never gonna use!

      @Open Paranormal Interesting! I am going to need to look into this further! As my iPhone 8 now has better regular (non low light) quality than my AX-53, and higher bit rate too (With ProMovie, I can film on my iphone 8 in 4k UHD at 60fps at 120mbit in h.265, so thats equivalent of approximately 240mbit in h.264 like all three of these use!) I need to find a use for my AX-53. Need to put it to more work. Sure, it's good for doing long events and what not, simpler to pull video off) but when regular video quality on a darn phone, hard to keep carrying these camcorders with me. If I can stream directly to youtube, there we go! Another use for it.

    Love the AX100. I wish it didn't have the usb cable, not needed. I pull the battery and cards for charge and transfer. Wish it had 1080p120 that the new 53 has though. I use two AX100's for 3D and the cables gets in the way. Overall, AX100 is the oldest but still the best of these cameras.

    An AX100 with the BOSS will be the ultimate camcorder. The 1" sensor provides an amazing picture. However, recording kids proved to be a challenge in getting smooth footage. I sold it for the AX53. The AX53 provides incredible smoothness. However, night or low light it sucks. The only issue I have had so for is the shoe area cracked from having it on a scorpion mount. :( Great review.

    I bought the AX53 in April and really like it. Absolutely no problems to date after filming in many different environments just to test the camera and particularly the 4k mode.My other camera is the Canon Vixia HF G30 which is an excellent prosumer model - but not 4k capable.Both have their pros/cons; but the lightweight AX53 sure makes it easy to bring along anywhere. As for the 4k aspect, I am recording it, but have not produced or edited any 4k video to watch. Just using it to 'future proof' the recordings. Thank you for an excellent review of all three Sony AX cameras!

    • @KmanAuto
      @KmanAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, the AXP55 is not available in USA or Canada, at least not officially. Not saying you cant get it, but it would not have a warranty. Unless, say, you purchased it in Japan, then went back to japan to honor the warranty.
      This time around, they just gave us the AX53. They did the same with the AX33, no projector. The AXP55 is the same as the AX53 only without the projector.
      I have the projector on my old 1080p PJR-380, and it is amazing! But it also doubled the cost of the camera (At the time it was $500 with the projector, or ~$240ish without for virtually identical model). It's nice to have, but not worth the extra cost to me. Either way, I carry my old 1080p camcorder with me anyways in my camera case as it's so dang small, so if I need to project, I just patch a HDMI cable from my AX53 to the 380.

    Man, oh MAN is this a great comparison video. It made me, a filmmaker who's ready to step up to 4K, think about what I really NEED, not what would be cool to HAVE. You laid out enough pros and cons to sink a Nimitz class aircraft carrier.
    And yes, Precision Camera, Sony's only authorized repair center, isn't doing them any favors with how they run things.
    Also, that's one super-suave fedora. I trust a sharp-dressed man who knows his 4K options.
    No - thank YOU!

    i just started looking at video cameras for the first time, looking for dark settings, within the car. So the IS is pretty much mandatory. Sounds like the 53 is the best option for me. Are these the staples within the industry, or would there possibly be other brands with a hybrid type that has a better cmos like the 100 along with a very good IS like the 53. Thanks for any input.

  • @littlejimmyscumbag2551

    I don't get why people say the AX100 one inch sensor produces a better image. On the side by side comparisons I see the AX53 is way more clear and sharp, even noticing the white dandelions floating around the screen whereas on the AX33 and AX100 the sky was more blown out, the grass much duller and less detailed and overall a worse quality. Not by much, but still noticeable. Also, on the low light shots, the AX100 had noise on it. You could produce that brightness in low light on the AX53 by adjusting the manual lighting no? I would assume if you turned up the manual light on the AX53 it would produce lighter video during the night but with noise, much like the AX100 is doing on auto. The AX53 seems to be the winner on all fronts especially considering the AX100 doesn't have stablization.

      I'd spend the extra $200 and go for the AX53. It performs so much better. Low light "shouldn't" be a issue, however, the larger pixels capturing more light, can still make a huge difference. Overall improvements are worth it!

I used to shoot w a Sony fx1 .. loved it. The world went digital and DSLR. So I switched too. Dslrs take all the fun out of outdoor shooting ... we had to have a myriad of attachments on dslrs to accomplish the same thing a cheap came with out of the box. Thanks again

    Thank you, Your review helped a lot. Went for the newer FDR AX53. Realized my needs fit into mostly the auto features and found the Bigger sensor at this time isn't worth the price difference for me at this time. Add that floating lens in the 53 as appose to soft wear steady shots in the 100 was the closer on the 53. Getting a Tascam d70 4 channel and a new tripod with the money I saved. Thanks again for your review, Subscribed and looking forward to what else you may have to show us. Cheers.

      I stuck with the ax-53. generally been happy with it. Overall, i liked the 33 better, but the 53 had better low light in the end, which was important for me. really missed the built in usb cable though.
      Still, in terms of camcorders, sony is very behind right now. pretty much ditched camcorders in general for 95% of my recordings in favor of a iphone with “Promovie” app that lets me record in h.265 at 120mbit. sony still only allows 100mbit in h.264. in comparison, that means the iphone is encoding at the equivalent of 240 mbit in h.264. so over 2x the quality. for video where i don’t need the BOSS stabilization, the phone beats the living crap out of all three of these cameras.

    Perfect knowledge of three cameras and video very useful to make decisions about the 3 amateur cameras from Sony 4K. One of the most enlightening tests I've seen.
    I have an ax33 and I'm desperately looking for another camera that solves two big problems: low light and slow motion. I can not find in the three cameras, answers. But what about the Sony PXW-X70? Without the handle has reasonable dimensions to carry, excellent stabilizer and very good slow motion.

    I went with the AX53. I plan to take it to Disney World and record some dark rides. From my experience at home so far, it seems best to leave off the night mode and low lux modes and limit the AGC to reduce noise. Even with the limit, I'm hoping it will still bring in more light with minimal noise compared to my phone (Galaxy S8+). One thing I wonder though is how it can bring in more light when the phone has a f-stop of 1.7 while the Sony has a f-stop of 2.0. Maybe just the fact that the lens is bigger will make the difference?

  • @rwprime1
    @rwprime1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video - thanks. My problem is kind of specific. Besides family, pets and all the usual, I love shooting RC planes (flying) and for that, you absolutely have to have a viewfinder / eye piece, preferably one that can be adjusted up. When the planes are on the ground I like to shoot them there as well with a walk-around. Secondly, I need a nice manual focus, preferably a ring around the lens and I can't be going into some menu to set it to manual every time I stop and start recording. Thirdly, I need big time zoom. Now, if you buy an HD camera, you can get 50x, but these 4K seem to be around 20x what's up with that? I'd even like to screw on a telephoto lens once in a while. Lastly, I can't spend an arm and a leg. Look, I'm just a retired old man that wants to shoot model airplanes on the weekend now and then. Why does it have to be so hard? Why does it have to be so expensive? Just adding an eyepiece takes you from a $158 Sony CX405 up to a $900 Canon G21 just for an eyepiece on an HD camcorder Geeessshhhhh! That's basicaly a $750 eyepiece! My 4K choices seem to be the Panasonic HC-WXF991K coming in around $800 and the Sony FDR-AX53 ditto. Black Friday is in two days and everybody has that 405 for around $158 bux. There's just no way you can zoom in on an RC plane going around in an oval (some fast / some slow) with that 405, I'm almost positive. There's no eyepiece, so you're going to have the sun and glare on that little screen and it's going to be impossible to see the plane. Appreciate your thoughts. Oh, years ago, I did all my shooting with one of those VHS-C cameras and it had the eyepiece, big time zoom and manual focus when needed. Gosh, I enjoyed that.

    Guys says he doesn't like refurbished so he buys open box. Open box, by definition, means the buyer returned it and it's been passed right on to you. Maybe it was returned because it was a lemon. Refurbished means that it's gone back to the factory and fixed and then gone through a complete inspection process much more rigorous than when it was first manufactured. I've bought a ton of refurbished items including cameras and laptops and never had a problem. Heard lots of complaints about open box including right in this video!

    great presentation, but curiously fopr something SO thorough, I did not hear mention the only thing I was saw immediately as the improvment from the 33 to the next gen 53 and that is greater optical zoom from 10x to 20x, a full doubling. also along w/ this is what sony calls 'clear image zoom' - the 523 has a longer C I Z than the prev models. it wd have been nice for Kman to also comment and assess this - both the lens / zoom detail as well as the comparative differences.

    Great video. I now know that AX100 has the better picture. Stability is the issue, of course, and I'm told that in AX53 the BOSS doesn't work in filming 4K. This doesn't make sense to me as BOSS is in the camera suspension, right? No one seems to mention this in reviews. This is critical for me in choosing a camera. Thanks.

      Boss word great in 4K. intelligent active (digital) stabilization does not, but not really needed anyways.

    • @susandietrich7162
      @susandietrich7162 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So the lens case still moves within the camera frame (structural) ... Intelligent active stabilization... software on the AX53, yes? And does the AX100 have comparable software. My question is: when walking across the room, filming someone, which camera will show less shaking in 4K... AX100 or AX53? That's something that deserves to be addressed singularly online as many are frustrated (link to accusation of Sony misleading consumers - sorry about the long URL..) [ www.sonyrumors.net/2016/01/27/sony-misleading-with-ax53-4k-handycam-balanced-optical-steadyshot-claims/ } and not having answers. I appreciate your expertise.

    • @KmanAuto
      @KmanAuto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lens and sensor are all floating on it's internal Gimbal inside the camera on the AX53.
      Stabilization Modes:
      Off= BOSS system turned off, and camera will not do any stabilization. Best for Tripod use.
      Standard= BOSS System Turned on (Floating Lens and Sensor)
      Active= BOSS System ON, + The camera crops some of the image to perform digital stabilization
      Intelligent Active = Same as Active, however, adjusts automatically accordingly and you loose MUCH MORE of your image for digital stabilization.
      Off, Standard and Active are available when shooting in 4k, Intelligent Active is available only in 1080 or lower resolutions due to the extreme loss cropping of the image for the digital stabilization.
      The difference is night and day between the AX100 and the AX53 in terms of walking while recording. Turn on the camera app on your phone, and walk across the room, thats what the AX100 will look like in terms of stabilization. The AX53 (And 33) with the BOSS system, would be CONSIDERABLY better.

    Guys, I got ax100 and it seems not strong AF (blurring, very slow) I don't know if any of a6100 or a6600 or Zv1 could match or give better image quality than ax100 because the lens in AX100 is very good.
    I understand the sensors difference from 1 inch sensor all the way to Aps-c but still the lens in ax100 is very good (if anyone knows how much the lens cost of ax100? In equivalent to sony lens?)
    Both Zv1 and ax100 is one inch sensor both same sensor but I don't know if zv1 lens could beat or same ax100 lens?
    Do you think that a6600 or a6100 can beat the ax100 or zv1 with their own lens come with the body (in term of video quality)?

    Very informative and helpful. I came here to review the AX100 with a mind to buying one for church/lecture use in crappy lighting, and your examples pretty much nailed that as the one to go for. But out of curiosity, do you know of any other camcorders in a similar quality range that are good with low light? We've been using a JVC gz-hd7e which just got retired which did 1080i, 3ccd, tripod only use but artifacts in the shadows. It's used in what was originally a dance hall kind of room so the lighting is dull and there are shadows everywhere.
    Any suggestions are appreciated. I'm supposed to take over the video recording eventually so I want to get off to a good start.

    • @KmanAuto
      @KmanAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To get any better in low light, prepare to spend 2-4x the money. The cameras do have a Low-Light mode, which can increase pixelation a bit, but does improve it. I've had very good success with my AX53 in the low light. It's cheaper then the AX100, and the larger Pixels in it allow for better low light.
      Having had experience with all 3 cameras, I'd rate the AX100 and AX53 about the same with Low light. I've done some very very nice low light shots that turned out very well. Including doing a 20 minute talk about how Tesla Autopilot radar works, from the comfort of my drivers seat using just the map light. Some Artifacts in the shadows, but considering the much poorer lighting condition in the car using a map light, it performed spectacularly.

    • @allanmowz
      @allanmowz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, apart from the AX100 and the AX53 there isn't really anything else that compares at that level? The more I look at it the more I want one for my own personal use too.

      On the review portion (Not the parts with the 4k clips) I did HEAVY processing to upscale the 1080p to 4k UHD since, I could not record the video on the cameras that were being used to review. In actuality, the PJ380, with its TINY sensor, produces a very bad picture in anything but the brightest of light.

Now, back to cameras, my budget needs to be spread out with upgrades including a new computer. I believe I must bow to AX33 after considering all you mention and not seeing AX100's used at the same price. Low light will not be more then a very small percentage of shooting and if it all actually hinges on that alone, I like the very small package AX33 offers. Should I come across some extra cash, that will be a game changer. However, I do not need the BOSS, but I will want the BOSS as I have so much gear without it. Thank you again.

      AX-53. It has served me well. HOWEVER, i realistically stopped using it for daily recording about 4 years ago. It’s now a secondary camera. My iPhone 8 and XS are now my primaries.
      I use an app called ProMovie. It lets me record in 4k 60 FPS in h.265 codec at 120mbit. That’s the rough equivalent of the AX53 recording at 240 mbit, as h.265 can yield same results in ~1/2 the bit rate. AX53 is still my go to when i will be recording with a lot of motion.

      After continuing to compare my AX53 (What I ended up choosing) to my friends older AX100 over the past year since producing this video, I have determined, unless you need the endless built in features of the AX100, the low light, and the BOSS stabilization on the AX53 seem to have the AX100 beat. With the 1.6x larger pixels, I'd rate the low light comparable. With Night Mode active (The green filter that comes on), the AX100 is superior, but in normal shooting, with and without regular low light mode, the AX53 I personally feel is equal or better.

    Btw: Sony is releasing the new AX700 with the stacked 1" sensor in December 2017... ;)
    Yepp, large sensor camcorders are rare unicorns. That's why a lot of video folks switched over to DSLRs and Mirrorless systems. Even MFT (4/3") is a much larger sensor than 1", the APS-C and fullframe sensors are taking the top spots. But: It also depends on the sensor readout and the software which video quality you gonna get... ;)
    But for most folks it's gonna be like: camcorders are easier to use if you're only shooting video...

    Hi. I just watched your video and thought it is pretty good. One thing missing on the 100 is the ability to external monitor while shooting in 4 K. This is unacceptable! I purchased the camera before knowing this. I have contacted Sony and there are a ton of others who have also complained about this. The theory is that it is this way to avoid buffer issues. But I have other cameras that run just fine with the external. And my Panasonic 1080p that is 9 years old runs the external beautifully while record in 60fps and 5.1 surround. This was a crippling development for me. And not discovered until after the 30 day return period.
    But for filmmakers such as myself, a no external monitor feature on 4K on a camera that cost nearly $2k is just unacceptable. I hoped early on Sony would patch with a firmware update. But that has since not happened... Your thoughts?
