    Hi Jon. While watching section on recalling last file/folder/partition, it occurred to me a wonderful feature would be the ability to tag an atr/rom/xex with a hotkey and populate a short table of favorites selectable from the menu. Sure something many would appreciate, that is unless a more obvious way of making own menus programmatically.

    I bought the SIDE3. I just have an stock 65XE. To prepare and create the APT partitions in a SD card with FDISK, I use Altirra and SIDE2 emulation, then write the resulting image to an SD, works great. Now I transferred all my games, sources, disks all to the cartridge and works at light-speed. Great product.

      @ChrisPatti 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eduardo, I would be forever in your debt if you'd be willing to post some details on how you do this. Whenever I get to FDISK and actually tell it to format the SD card all I can get out of it is "I/O Error 255". Thanks in advance!

    • @elkino1
      @elkino1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisPatti I configured Altirra to use an emulated SIDE2, and created a Hardisk using a VHD image. Then formated the VHD using FDISK, using a FAT16 partition and several 16MB APT with FDISK. Finally I copy the VHD to the SD with a windows utility "HDD Raw Copy Tool". Write directly to the SD from SIDE2 emulation not work.

    Does the SIDE3.1 cartridge fit the Atari 1200XL? As you know, Jon, I got weak and couldn't resist grabbing a sweet 1200XL for my growing collection of Ataris which I haven't even yet received from the sellers in United States.

    • @flashjazzcat

      You'll need to file/sand down either side of the cart shell by about 0.25-0.5mm in order for it to fit the 1200XL properly (unless you simply remove the cart shell).

    Hi Jazz, How do you get other games demos etc.. on to the side3? Ive got sd card thats already partitioned with fodlers etc.. and all is working well ive updated the loader to version 0.39 and the spartados to 4.49e on the cart but now i want to transfer a cart file ive downloaded on pc ive tried taking the sd card direct to the pc but as its been partitioned and formatted as a fat32 the pc is asking to format the sd card so im just wanting to know how to transfer a cart image to the necessary folder on the sd cart or is this something i can only do once the U1mb is installed and not on stock 64k ?

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ignore any nag dialogs to format stuff, since it'll confuse the issue (Windows insists on asking you to format the APT container, which you must not do since that would destroy all your APT partitions). Presumably your card was pre-partitioned with 3 or 4 APT partitions and a FAT32 partition. So in this case, just cancel the dialog which pops up and go right ahead and copy your stuff into the FAT partition. Job done: it'll then show up in the loader.

      And what’s the difference between side3 and ultimate 1mb?

  • @pfcrow
    @pfcrow ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm wondering how it loads disks that expect to not have a cartridge installed. I was thinking that besides the cartridge memory, you get 256 bytes at D500 if you watch the select line. If you're insanely clever, you could use a byte for bank selecting and then put all the disk emulation code there, so you could them boot with disks and just RAM where the cartridge lives. I suppose you could put everything into that D500 page and only use the cartridge space for cartridge images.

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's more or less how it works. The SD card registers remain when the ROM is turned off, and turning the ROM off is the first thing the loader does before booting the OS (whether performing a cold-boot when U1MB is present, or soft-booting the RAM-based OS when the cart is used stand-alone). In stand-alone mode (no U1MB PBI support present), the entire ATR image is loaded into SRAM, then the patched OS is installed, which has a patched SIO handler which reads 'sectors' from the image in cartridge SRAM (which is indeed accessed through the 'keyhole' at $D500-7F after the cart ROM is disabled). When U1MB is present, the PBI BIOS (4 banks of 2K ROM under the FP pack) handles ATRs, and is able to read/write them directly. Although the cart ROM is routinely disabled before running an XEX or ATR, the loader allows the simultaneous mounting of an emulated cart, so you can - for instance - boot DOS 2.5 from an ATR, with OSS BASIC XL present at the same time. When you run an ATR or XEX from the loader and there's an emulated cart already mounted, it will ask you if you want to unmount said cart image first (unless you configure the loader to always unmount cart images automatically).

    Is there a difference between the 2MB and 8MB SRAM models of the SIDE3? Also, is there anyone I can goto to upgrade a SIDE3 to 8MB?

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends if you're asking to upgrade a SIDE3 from 2MB to 8MB or a SIDE 3.1 from 2MB to 8MB. SIDE 3.1 has a few stability fixes, provision for future ECI connectivity, and provision for 2-8MB of SRAM. I'm not aware that SIDE3 has any provision for 8MB of SRAM, but Candle would be the one to check with there. I can swap the BGA SRAM chip on a SIDE 3.1.

    Hi Jon ive just got my side3 and in the meantime ive ordered the sd card with all files demos etc on from retrolemon but in the meantime i have put a snadisk 2gb card in and the side3 recognises the sd card but i cant format it or even use fdisk? If i use fdisk it keeps coming back MEMLO to high? What does that mean? Ive also download the apt toolkit so do i need to put that on the sd drive max and load it then go again?

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally you want some extended RAM on the system in order to use SpartaDOS X and FDISK comfortably. You can create a Spartados-formatted ATR if you want with a custom CONFIG.SYS on it and boot from that on D1:. See the SDX manual for examples of how to do this, but bascially you want to omit DEVICE ATARIDOS and anything else not needed in order to get FDISK to run. MEMLO needs to be at or below $2000 for most software to run, and on a 64K machine, the drivers loaded by SDX push this up too high. Definitely consider installing some kind of RAM upgrade, though.

      Yes - it's a Phi2 timing issue. Try replacing 74LS08 on the Atari motherboard with 74F08. Vendor should be able to tell you more about this, since it's a known issue. If that doesn't work, try the 'O2 Fixer': Vendor - again - will be able to explain in more detail. Lotharek's 5V PSU is also recommended. 1.5A should be enough current, but you have barely any headroom.
