    This is part two of a series where I restore and test 3 of the old Atari 8-bit machines.
    To do that I also need to build some cartridges and test out some modern equipment on them.
    I also explore some Atari SIO to USB solution to load games from a modern computer.

    I love how you get machines that are underappreciated and rather unloved and transform them into works of computing art. This was a good bit of work, but I'm sure you feel like it was worth it. Well done!

    This was a great video. I have 2 800 XL's ad 2 65 XE's. Love them, had lots of fun. Only have one Atari joystick. The second, the plastic was very brittle, so the joystick fell apart. Thank you for this video.

    * TIP *
    15:48 For a much Faster clean whilst getting into nooks and crannies I recommend you use a Paint brush that has it's bristles shortened for the desired stiffness.
    It always takes two to three trims to get the right stiffness for me as it ensures the bristles really gets into the nooks and crannies. I even use the same brush with
    IPA to rip through what I consider a real boring chore that needs doing every 6 months or so..
    APU I dropped yo a 👉👍👈

    SIO2SD has a built-in file browser. You just need to hold the Shift button (the one on the SIO2SD) during the boot. Once it starts, you can use a joystick to navigate the browser.

    Nice that you got a fully socketed version of the 800XL. It's more common for the 600XL to be fully socketed

    It is nice seeing the Atari 8bits. You can add SVideo output to the 800xl as part of the Super Video 2.1 mod. I found 2 versions of the instructions. The one being a "webpage" version, that says it is the 2.1 but it is incomplete and stops at "2.0". The other being a pdf scan of an article. The article is complete, there is a hand written Correction on it that was written in for Step 3 for the 2.1 800XL section, where it was typed R53 it is has written in R5"2". I skipped the switch installation, as I have more Composite displays than SVideo compatible ones. Yes there are modern video upgrades, but I prefer DIY projects. I was very happy with the results.

    Tommy, what I've found works really well for rust, is to use a dremmel to remove heavy rust and then dab the area with phosporic acid. Wait a few minutes, neutralise the acid with baking soda and then finally cleaning it with IPA

      Hi! Thanks for the insight. Don't know where I could get phosporic acid, but definetly using a dremel next time.

      @@Arcticretro At least here in Australia you can get phosphoric acid from home brewing shops or hardware stores. I believe it's even in coca cola 🙂

    I think the issue with the original membrane was the same issue I had with my ZX Spectrum+, you need to untighten the screws in that general area - the added tension makes the two layers come into contact.
    Guess I can throw away my tube of electric paint as well, bought the same thing some time ago 😅

    Looking forward to the XE. I have to admit, I wanted one of those machines. I took the trajectory from Atari 400 to C-64. The 64 was great with all the software that was written for it. But when I got into programming things on the C-64 ... well, Atari Basic was much more empowering for a kid than Commodore Basic. I never did assembler on my Atari like I did on the Commodore, so can't compare. I imagine it would have been more difficult on the Atari since you had all the co-processors making the Atari do things that were done on the CPU with the Commodore. Even tho they were the same CPU the programming would be much different.

      The C64 and Atari 8-bits are about as difficult to code for as each other. The one challenge on the C64 is raster interrupts for sprite multiplexing, but that's not really that difficult. The C64 has plenty of "coprocessors" in the form of the VIC-II, SID, and CIA chips, so you're not really doing a tonne on the CPU. The Spectrum is much more of a challenge to work with as you're doing everything except managing the screen buffer with the CPU, even audio before the later models got a proper sound chip.

    The 32GB limitation on FAT32 is a Windows thing, you can format larger FAT32 partitions elsewhere (Mac, Linux, etc).

    • @Arcticretro
      @Arcticretro  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but the SIO2SD would not read large partitions

    Perhaps you already know this, but you can also test the 74xx and the 4xxx IC’s with your EPROM programmer.

    Interesting video, thank you. My 800XL has a slightly different internals, like the TV channel 2/3 selector, more ground wires between the two shell pieces, and the keyboard spring is only one item, a spring that is wider at the membrane side and narrow at the top side.
    I need to find a way to fix the key N, which doesn't work.

      The C64 of course :)
