    I run a stack of Crown XLI series. They're class A/B, weigh a ton and sound great. Over 300 watts per channel for $399. Lots of people use the xls series which is class D and love them too. I have a Monoprice Monolith on the way so we'll see if it sounds different or better.

    I use 3 Behringer KM750 amps and might even expand to two more. They are solid amps and bought them off sweatwater for like $225 each. The cooling fan is one speed and has some people complaining about it, but my rack is 20ft away and isn’t any louder than my projector behind me. I like the industrial look of all those two channel amps stacked up!

    I find it interesting that audiophiles (as opposed to cinephiles) nearly universally claim there’s differences between amps (sometimes significant differences), yet home theater enthusiasts nearly unanimously claim they hear no difference.
    Imho, there actually are some differences, but it’s mainly related to two things:
    -noise floor
    -transient response
    We are very good at filtering out noise (at least to a point), so we may not notice a fairly significant difference in noise floor. Also, it’s difficult to do a direct comparison with matching volume levels.
    Transient response can also be difficult to evaluate, and we have to acknowledge not all of us have the “golden ears” necessary to hear these distinctions.
    Audiophiles also tend to be two channel aficionados and it’s easier to hear distinctions between amps, especially with high quality music (home theater content is often of lesser quality, though there’s lots of poorly recorded music also)
    My thinking is it’s best to choose the quietest and most powerful amp possible, since sound quality suffers greatly when amps and speakers are pushed behind their reasonable limits.

    • @puttyputty123
      @puttyputty123 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it is because there is so much room correction going on as well as sound just being part of the experience. I am not so picky about home theater stuff as I am about my two channel. Then again my HT is nowhere the SQ of my two channel setup. That there is no difference in amps is some of the more incredible things I hear from "that side".

    It's only when I started a shield all my cables that I really noticed how much my noise floor had been reduced! Most people don't even realise unshielded cables are more to blame for noise than any amps or AVRs.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We’re you able to measure the noise floor? Curious how much difference it made.

    • @totalplonker824
      @totalplonker824 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Being 2-channel music lover... I've always being a stickler for unwanted noise, that's part of reason why I've use a audiophile grade power conditioner and when I moved to a AVR, still didn't have a problem with any kind of noise, it's only when I added surrounds and heights that I started to become aware of this signal noise noise (only faint but annoying) so obviously that was telling me it was the cables, mainly the cables of length. Got to remember unshielded cables act as antennas for attracting radio frequencies and the longer the cable the better the antenna! Probably explains why the noise floor was drastically reduced when ever I disconnected the heights and surrounds 🤔
      Well anyway after I shielded all my speaker cables, my noise floor was approximately 50% less (no measurements, ears only) and then after I've shielded all of my HDMI cables and purchased some high-end shielded power cables the noise floor had been reduced by another 10 to 15%. I expected I was going to have to shield my ethernet cables as well but the noise floor has become so quiet the only thing I can hear is the fans coming from the freezer department of the fridge, which is obviously located in the kitchen🥳
      I posted a short 3-minute 2-channel sound test video, and I think you should be able to view the power conditioner and cables.
      But if you can't I'm running an arcam avr20 with matching 4-channel power amps...

    I've had 3 amps: Crown XLS1002, OSD XA5180 and a Buckeye amp with NP252 and NP502 modules.
    The buckeye amp is the only one completely silent. And it's lightweight! The OSD amp sounds great, with little noise but it's super heavy at 50+ pounds for a 5 channel amp. The crown amp was also good but way too high of a noise floor for my liking (granted it was the entry level model).
    For me, moving to class D with those hypex modules, just for the weight/size reduction alone is worth it.

I know Youthman used the 8015 (or 8012) to power his full system and that cost $3,200 back then. Sadly it's $4k and comes with a 3 year warranty instead of the 5 years that Monolith and Emotiva offer.

      @@Youthman Yes that why I used past tense.
      Solid choice!!! how much does the 11X weigh?
      For me, I don't own a dedicated home theater, I have 2 living room 5.1 systems that are used for all kinds of media but they get so much use, it's not even funny.
      I'd love to see an audiophile grade 7.1 in the $2,000-$2,500 range with a toroidal transformer from Monolith and Emotiva that can fit in my cabinets (that last part is very important😁)
      I'm getting by with several Marantz 8000 series AVRs which are epic especially bi-amping the front Left and Right.
      Btw, I know you've tried a lot of things but have you bi-amped?

    Good day Mr. Y!
    On another subject, I need your advice with speaker wires please... Up to 20 feet, it's not too difficult to choose a necessary wire gauge for speaker cables... it's more the long runs that are questionable. Therefore, I need to install a 65 to 75 foot run to my rear height Atmos speakers... is 12 gauge OFC cable sufficient for my in-wall installation? Is 10 AWG better for this length or will 10 gauge diminish the quality of sound on the highs (mid-range and tweeter)... your advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards, Perry

    One thing that was not mentioned with the Pro amps opposed to home theater amps is operational noise. I have my home theater equipment in my actual theater, Pro amps have fans that produce a lot of noise, some mods can be done to reduce this but this is the main reason why people don't go Pro/Commercial if they have the equipment nearby to their listening position. However with those fans comes greater power output as it can cool the amps more efficiently. If you have your equipment in your room and not in another room going non-pro is most likely going to be the way to go.

    LCR - Hypex is a king of power & clarity, or hi-end A/B class amp (depends of your money)
    Surrounding - that is a big problem for all i think: low cost amps - not enough power.
    Subsystem - only professional amplifiers or their replicates from China (we all know that we are talking about Sinbosen etc)

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just curious if you would be able to hear a difference in clarity between two amplifiers.

    • @GregBenedict
      @GregBenedict ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Youthman There are two primary ways that I can tell the difference between amps. 1) If a drummer hits a snare hard or a gun is fired in a scene, does it physically impact you? It's how quick the leading edge of a mid-bass note hits. Slew rate is a pretty good indicator of a quick reacting amp. 2) How well does it control lower frequencies? Does a kick drum stop immediately or does the woofer continue to move a bit longer? You may have a hard time picking it up with single notes, but it blurs the sounds that come immediately after it. If you are rolling off your home theater speakers, it may not come into play.
      Secondary ways would be high frequency roll off or mid boost from a tube, and a bad power supply that just sounds a bit like an edgy MP3.
