    Man, your videos just keep getting better and better. That intro 😂. On the technical side, I saw other videos explaining the pros of having a dedicated processor in how much detailed and precise the sound was, but was unaware that using external amps with an AVR also would improve on that aspect. I thought it would just provide more power output. This was indeed, as always, as informative as it was entertaining. Well done 👍

    I picked up the Emotiva BasX A3 and it made a difference to my front sound stage. Now the sound better matches my 92-inch screen with a 4K HDR image. The Ambiance of sounds such as the jingling of keys, the rustling of leaves, and the wind blowing through tall grass is impressive. The front stage of sound also sounds more dynamic and a foot closer. Lastly, the side speakers now blend better with the fronts. I JUST ordered the Emotiva BasX A4 to power my side and rear surrounds (don't tell my spouse).

    If you do indeed only have a 5 channel setup then you should select the pre amplifier mode. Even with pre outs being used the internal amps in the AVR are still engaged, with the pre amp mode it actually turns off all internal amps and might provide even more separation. Just something to try, anyways great video. You sir have earned another subscriber👍

      You don't have any load connected to the internal amps, it's just an open circuit when you're only using the preouts. How is the receiver gonna send any power to the internal amps and how will you get any more separation?

    I totally agree. I thought my Denon 4700h would be enough for my 7.1.2 system. But adding the A5 is amazing. Use the AVR do the processing (Denon is excellent) and Emotiva for power.

      As far as the Emotiva, now that I’ve experienced supplementing an AVR’s power with an ext amp, I’m a big fan of alleviating as much of the AVR’s power as possible.
      So yeah, I would get the A7 to power all speakers, to allow the AVR to just be a processor. Sharing the load like that opens up everything and power distribution is fantastic. 🤘🙌

    Having a similar setup, you do not have to set 5 chanels and surround back and you do not have to configure the front speakers to preout. It all happens automatically, even while choosing 5 speakers only without configuring preout for the front speakers

      I read that the preout is always active on all channels. However, I wonder if not explicitly configuring the preout channels will affect the sound processing algorithm (if that’s a thing). I don’t know how AVRs process and distribute sound hence my curiosity.

    Here's something to try: Open up the Onkyo and find where the internal amps are, then from there you can find the preamps, then from there, wire an RCA female connection to each channel, then connect the emotiva to those and see if you get the same sound quality you found with the Denon preouts? If this works, it would definitely beat spending a whole grand on a new avr.

    Great video. I'm recommending your channel going forward.
    I've been stuck in trying to decide between a couple of BasX amps to run my 5.1.4 (A3 along with the A7) or just biting the bullet and getting the Monolith by Monoprice 9-Channel amp. The Monolith is obviously more expensive (considerably), but I can't shake the thought of never having to re-buy an amp. And having the amp power all in one box seems like a much easier solution. More power, plus balance XLRs in case I ever decide to jump into the pre-pro waters.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliments! And yeah…such is the dilemma with home theater. Since you seem to already have that goal in sight to get separates some day, might as well go for the investment of a Monolith 9 channel amp.
      Although since the latest BasX line seems super popular right now, I bet resale value will still hold its value for a long time. So you could maybe have a future plan of 1) budget amps 2) preamp 3) monolith amp? And use the proceeds from selling the BasX amps to help buy the monolith. Something to consider. Although the A3 is sold out right now. Everyone wanted their hands on that!

    • @stevencouto3025
      @stevencouto3025 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ealanosborne I think I overthought my plan. I was going to bring in the A7 first and then add the A3 once it became available to run my front stage (with the A7 running my surrounds and 4 atmos (90w per channel)). But that setup would have cost me $1200 USD. It would have also left the amp on my Denon 3600 being unused and 1 output on the A7 that would have been unused as well.
      Now I'm thinking a combo of the A3 and A4. $1000USD. A3 for the front stage (140w per channel). A4 for Atmos (100w per channel). Receiver for Surrounds (105w per channel). That combo gives my surrounds and atmos "more power", makes use of the receiver amp, has no unused channels on either of the BasX amps, and would be $200 cheaper.
      That seems like the better plan.

    I want to purchase an BasX A3...my question is will my Onkyo RZ50's preouts have enough power to drive the A3, and how do you determine the preout wattage...or how much preout wattage is needed to drive power amplifers.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since it’s a pre out, it’s taking the audio signal pre - or before - it hits the internal amp at all. So there’s no wattage involved with pre outs. Voltage, yes, but just because it’s an electronic device that runs in electricity. So the RZ50 is only sending the audio signal to the A3, which then the A3 alone powers 3 of your speakers.
      That’s the really cool thing about adding external amps to any system - your essentially relieving the AVR from having to do EVERYTHING (video switching, audio processing, powering your speakers), so you’re helping it perform better by making it do less. Make sense? ☺️

    Hey Ealan, I have 5.2.2 setup with Denon 4400h. Planning to get A3 from ur link. May I know what settings to choose to power up LCR? (Amp assign and settings to select)
    If I cannot externally power the front stage then no point getting A3. Having rp280f's and rp450c in my front stage.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can power your LCR with a BasX A3. Within the Denon's software it's a bit tricky, though. Not like how you would think at first:
      In the Amp Assign page, choose 11.1, for Floor speakers, choose 5ch+SB. Height channels choose 4ch to max out the Denon's internal amps and engage the pre out section. In the pre out section, choose Front to have your L/R speakers powered externally.
      Then go back to the previous menu page and go into Speaker Config. In there, you would select front speakers, center, 2 subwoofers, 2 surrounds, surround back "none," Front height to 2, and Rear Height to "none."
      So basically you're telling the software to assign a 7.2.4 setup, but then selecting a Speaker Config of 5.2.2. Pretty weird, but that's just how it works. :) I hope that makes sense!
      When the time comes, check out my video on Atmos configurations. I don't specifically go over a 5.2.2 setup with an external amp, but it should help.

      Hi, thanks for the reply. L/R speakers powered as you have mentioned. But I don't see an option to select center channel to power externally?
      Even if I use the pre out of Center channel, will the denon internal amps draw power for the center channel(active)?

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@balajis7719 No. Front L/R are the only pre outs in your case that need to be assigned. All other pre outs (including center) will just be "on" and ready for a signal if you plug an RCA cable into its corresponding pre out port. And since an RCA cable would be plugged into your center, that disengages the internal amp for the center channel.

    • @balajis7719

    Question: It was shown, from BasX A5 Trigger out can be connected to another Amplifier’s Trigger Input to power more 4 speakers, so from AVR like 3700h we have to connect 4 more preouts with RCA’s to the second Amp with 4 extra speakers wires connected to second amp, correct?
    And also as you know, in the Denon 3700h- there is a ‘Pre Amplifier’ Amp assign config which can shut off all the internal AVR amps- so ultimately when we connect two power amps with all 9 speakers sounding from the amps, receiving audio signals from AVR, right?

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s correct! You would just connect 4 more RCA cables to the additional pre-outs necessary. But yes, you also could just use “preamp” mode to turn all the internal amps off.
      Although I guess the only scenario you’d still need to use 2 internal amps is if you only had 9 external amp channels and wanted to process a total of 11 channels. Although in my example, I probably should’ve done a hypothetical 3 channel + 2 channel amp or something. 🤷‍♂️😄 So many configurations and possibilities!

I recently got the Denon anniversary AVR-A110 13.2 channel receiver and will be using all the 13.2 channels. Have Klipsch RF8000F as front channels. Center is Polk LSiM706. Other surround speakers are a combination of Klipsch Atmos, Kef bookshelf and one pair of SVS Prime elevation. Do I need an external amplifier to drive all these or is the receiver able to handle these? Another question, if I get the 3 channel amplifier for just the front stage, is there a way to turn off the power to those channels in the receiver so the power is distributed to the other channels or does it really matter because no speaker will be connected to those channels? Thanks.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow!!! That’s the flagship beast AVR from Denon. NICE! In answer to your questions, no, you wouldn’t need an external amp to power up to a 13.2 channel configuration.
      But, it is always a good thing to share the load with some external amps wherever possible. So if you did get the A3, and assigned it to your front soundstage, yes, that would essentially turn off those 3 amps inside of the Denon since no signal is reaching them. 👍 That’s gonna be a man incredible setup!

    Hello I’m in the market for an AV receiver. I have a 7.1.2 configuration with focal aria 936 fronts and surrounds of the same series. I’m currently looking out for a marantz sr6015 and not really want to go down the separates and amplifiers path. So I was wondering whether the sr6015 can power my setup comfortably or do I need to get a power amp to help it out? Thank you.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! Well, after experiencing the BasX A5, I'm always going to suggest powering some, if not all speakers with external amplifiers, to share the work load with the Marantz.
      You can definitely get by with just using the internal amps, for sure. It's powerful enough to get the job done. But you'll still get more detail and precision by using external amps with your Marantz. But you can do that down the road, for sure.
      Get the Marantz now, then maybe in 6 months or a year, get an external amp. There's no rush. Building a home theater slowly is your best bet.

Once Emotiva introduced the new BasX line, I became intrigued. I already owned the Marantz SR6015 which can drive 11 channels, but needed a separate amp for the height/Atmos speakers. So I considered the A4 for those. In the end I just pulled the trigger and decided to balance the power across the entire field and purchased 3 BasX amps. 1 A3 and 2 A4s. Like you Ealan, I was impressed with the performance upgrade. True it was subtle, but also very noticeable. I will have to go back and re-watch the scenes you mentioned in this video. • @KhaledTheSaudiHawkII
      @KhaledTheSaudiHawkII 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The short answer to your question is yes but not that much more. The higher up the Emotiva basX ladder you go, the lower power you get. The upside of going for a higher model is saving space & money. The downside is the power cap which will be especially noticeable if you have a not so efficient set of speakers. My recommendation would be to go for a modular setup. Use the A3 to power your center channel & surrounds and the A2 to power your front right & left. If you’re on budget, just get the A3 and power your LCR and if you get the A2 in the future, switch to the configuration I suggested above. And let your AVR handle the low load height/atmos speakers.
      Personally, I have the A3 that Im using to power my Klipsch LCR (RP-6000f ii & RP-504c ii). My Infinity AC fan doesn’t kick off as soon as it used to now. Before, it was running in max speed when watching movies.

      My opinion: Get the A7 for 5 channel instead as it:
      1. Has a 1000w psu allowing for "200w per channel" vs "140w" with the A5's 700w psu. This provides more headroom for each amp, especially for dynamic bursts.
      2. Larger heatsink to dissipate the heat better
      3. The logic? board is moved to the rear of the chassis further away from the amp board which may help lower and EMI between the two, and it has it's own cooling fan.
      4. You have the option to add 2 more speakers later.
      But...at $600 you're also at OSD Black A5500 (old A5180) /Outlaw Audio's 5000x pricing, and has benched 134w all channels driven by Audioholics, and has Balanced XLR inputs.

      Oof. Yikes. Tough question. According to the manual, you would first need to put it in Dolby Atmos 9.1 mode. But after that (at least according to the diagram) the external amp is only powering the rear height channels. It’s not absolutely clear if the rest of the channels are considered “always on and ready” for an external amp signal, but I would assume so? Since on the back you still have pre-outs for all channels. 🤷‍♂️
      It may be a software limitation in which when you DO use an external amp, you have to at LEAST power your Rear Heights with your BasX A5. Beyond that, I think it’s fair game. So that being said, try to power the Rear Heights, Front Left, Center, Front Right with the A5. Or even try powering all 5 bed layer speakers in the Dolby Atmos 9.1 mode…but that might mean nothing will come out of Rear Height channels? Experimentation, yay! 😄🙌

      @ealanosborne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I'm sorry, man...using an external amp only works with the more expensive AVRs with a full set of pre-outs. 😬 That's how external amps work - the (RCA) patch cables take the audio signal away before it gets to the AVR's internal amp, sends it to the external amp, which then sends the externally powered signal to the speakers. There used to be 7 channel amps that had a full set of pre-outs, but that's just not the case anymore. I do apologize that you're in this situation, but it's the truth. Either you wait it out until you can save up for an AVR with a full set of pre-outs, or maybe just return the BasX A3 and try again later when you can get both a BasX A3 and a $1,000+ AVR. 😕
