When i was younger my phone broke, i didnt know how to buy a phone at the time and got very bored.
It was that boredom that meant I had to explore other things that didn't involve being glued to a screen that led me down a path that I've not left of designing and creating furniture. Thats now turned into a job and Im thankful that Apple was too shit at the time to keep my phone alive.

Challenge your mind to the extreme. It's kind of hard, but you will find tremendous results. Start small, pick a subject, then dive deep into it.

As an aspiring web developer, this hits hard AF. It's the reality I came to recently that caused a full paradigm shift within me. Most helpful trick to me was:
I just need to do one single thing on this project per day. If I was drawing, for example, I told myself I just need to draw ONE line on paper per day.
I quickly find myself ending up doing more than just that single line after starting and it's helped me stay motivated with my projects.

Heard someone describe it as a type of 'momentum' almost like a Newton physics type thing. Hardest thing is to get the ball rolling, but once it's in motion that thing is surprisingly easy to keep moving.

    • @spiderhaz_
      @spiderhaz_ 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +15

@@ForgottenMovieGems It's described in "Atomic Habits" as the 2 minute rule, starting habits like drawing at 2 minutes or less makes the habit way more likely to stick.
This is especially true because most of the time it takes more then 2 minutes to feel as if you've made progress, so "having to stop" at 2 minutes is actually a bad thing.
You essentially flip the negative from "having to do something" into "having to stop doing something".
It's also known that the length of a habit isn't as important to developing new habits, but the number of times you do the habit is key. So you doing a line every day is reinforcing the habit more then if you did 10 minutes every week.
Can't say I'm very good at applying these principals but It's definitely interesting.

Great advice. I'm a creative writer and when I'm in the draft writing phase I give myself a 500 word per day goal. It could be complete trash but I have to put it down every day and move forward with my story. I've written 2 books in 4 years and started my 3rd a few months ago. After my first and second books, I posted them for free online, just to get feedback. Then I told my friends I was a writer and shared the overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Just on that alone, me being open and talking about my interest in writing and my limited experience with it, I was given the chance to write a screenplay for a small production company early this year. Never wrote a screenplay before but I gave myself a deadline and worked on it a little bit every day. I gave it over to the company to review it and they said they really liked it and wanted to shoot it in January.
I didn't ever expect this opportunity to ever come up but it's a culmination of small choices I made over time to sit down and write or to be more open with calling myself a creative writer. People saw the passion I had and gave me a chance, and I took it.
You can do it too, whatever your creative interest is in.

I needed this. I'm 41, I went to film school at 24 years old, I briefly worked in the industry before the big crash of '08 where I couldn't afford to live in LA anymore. I went back to my hometown with my tail tucked between my legs, in order to survive my mental state, I had to make a deal with myself that I would be okay with becoming just another consumer again, and not beat myself up for not being creative. Flash forward almost 18 years, and I have very little that I'm proud of. I've been successful in less creative endeavors such as strength training, I've been a home owner since 2012, I have a strong connection with my parents now, and I even still do video production as a career, but outside of work, I don't have any real hobbies or things to look forward to. I'm so glad I clicked on this video because it's what I needed to hear.
I only started my channel this year and slowly began to upload videos alongside my studies and working a part-time job. Creating and uploading my own short films was SO much more rewarding than the stuff I was doing during the day, no matter the grades I got or the money I was earning. However few subscribers or followers I had was irrelevant, frankly, because that one positive comment would always remind me to keep at it.
Remember, dedicating just a little bit each day to your passion will do you wonders!

I'll say one things as someone who has had a lot to think on lately do to some unfortunate events in life. Sharing can be a way for us to connect to each other, even if its just a single individual who sees it. You can still create things even if you dont share them online. Sometimes things are just for us or maybe its something you want to share with the people you care about most. Start by just creating and allowing yourself to take up space. What motivates you? What makes you feel? what is your goal? I find making small goals at first can give you a start. Write down your goal that you can obtain and set times where you can put the time into it. Keep doing it as consistently as you can so that you can motivate yourself to keep doing it. Then you can keep adding on to challenge yourself more instead of just falling apart when you cant be perfect at the start. Its your journey, not anyone elses so dont waste your time comparing yourself to others.

Consuming should only be to support a creative life. It should not be an end in itself and entertainment. I realized this when I became homebound with a digestive disease. I was having a more meaningful life creating to share with others than when I spent most of my free time socializing (shopping and eating out).

Felt like this so much, quit my job to cycle Italy and document it. Getting somewhere now, slowly. Being a consumer has never been easier, so easy to fall into the rut, if you're unhappy, you just got to wake up, stop going through the motions and make an effort to do something different. Figuring out what to do is always the hardest, you can spend forever thinking about what would be the best for you, the most profitable, the most sustainable, but you just have to pick something and make it right. It won't feel right from the start, but you'll feel better for it.

*I HAVE 2 CREATIVE "JOBS"* this is my advice, set yourself a tiny daily minimum and NEVER NEVER miss it - even if what you produce is crap...!!! Crap is INFINATLY better than nothing.
When I wrote my first book I set a daily minimum of 1,500 words and very often the first 750 - 1,000 would be terrible, but I would get into the flow and write more than 1,500 and maybe 500 made it into the final edit. Its not important that everything is amazing, its important that you DO SOMETHING - cos it _might_ be amazing...!!!

I agree with everything but posting and sharing your work on social media. It feels egotistical and inauthentic. Post it in the real world with no name. Just art with no ego that breaks someone’s routine and makes them smile, laugh, or think.
To get the feeling of progress, keep many notebooks and take the time to reflect on your work. It’s a huge confidence booster

I’m a life coach, actor and comedian and my mission is helping people heal through humor. I started finally getting out of my own way and creating comedic videos and characters and posting everyday and the act of doing that regardless of the outcome has been freeing for me and gets me creating other things. Playing and creating is the way out of most of our issues! Great video! 😊😊😊

A few days ago, I was thinking about what I want to change in 2025, and this was EXATLY the sentence that came to my mind: Consume less, create more. I am so done with only living to work to accumulate unnecessary stuff, consume reels until 3 in the morning and be passively washed over by my environment, instead of actively deciding where my life should head to.
Be active, you are the creator of your own story. Consume less, create more.

This video came at the right time. I have had a youtube channel since 2016, but I have never committed to posting videos. I have about 300 subscribers and a few music production tutorial videos that went well, but I never saw it as my "thing", I felt like I wasn't good enough to pursue it. If I were posting videos all these years, I would certainly have thousands of subscribers, but my consumption of yt videos, reels, etc. prevents me from pursuing my "dream". But everything is changing, minutes before I was making a list of goals for my channel and I hope to achieve it. Greetings from Brazil.

Thanks for reminding me. There are so many distractions in the digital world that I forget what I really need to do to be happy. What stops me from creating are expectations, when I should just create for the sake of creating, like as a child. The consuming amplifies this since a lot I consume is "better" work than mine, which sets the expectations too high.
It's easier to enjoy the high quality work of others than to go through the pain of being "bad" until reaching that quality myself. What would completely fix this is forgetting the quality and just enjoying the creating. The quality would be a side product and not the goal, which comes by itself with time, or by accident. Paradoxically, the more I think about this even in this merciful sense, the more I'm afraid of creating, since the problem is thinking about it at all rather than just being free of thought and enjoying the doing.
This is why one thing I disagree just a little bit about on this video, is having the goal of sharing and improving. Because those set up external expectations (e.g. monetary or social value), which often create fear and unnecessary uncertainty of ability, and lead to the inability to create. Although, if you are able to forget these external pressures and the expectations are purely internal without the egoistic mess, the goal of improving and sharing could be useful and might improve efficiency.
    Good subject, good video

  • @CollectionOfTheTimeless
    @CollectionOfTheTimeless 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Creating is also internal. Presence has depth. Once you're mindful, you're aligned with the present moment and you're not driven by desire. You're then truly creating, reflecting what's important, and what is right within that moment.

Also, stop viewing your creations through the lens of sellability.
One of my greatest hurdles in being creative is, that I have this subconcious thought that anything I create has to be a masterwork to count. Part of that, I think, is that we as a society view creativity through the lens of profit generation. Even the first compliment most people reach for is "you could sell that". I think we should start to create for the sake of creating instead.

      You are so right!
This reminds me of someone I told with enthusiasm about a comic on the internet that I found, the comic artist drew hundreds of comic pages for everyone to see for free (by the way, it was a fan comic, a "next generation story" of the original story). And this person asked me: "What's the point of creating something that you don't earn money from?" 😐 So sad!
One of my personal experiences with making art my profession was that I was commissioned to paint a picture. The theme of the picture was not mine, my imagination was honestly bored with it, I had no good ideas about how the picture should look and the picture just wasn't good enough in the end.
Follow your heart, and don`t care about followers or earn money with your creations.

You don't need to make anything life changing but if I could leave this world making at least 1 thing that other people around me enjoyed using before I pass away I'll feel that my life will have been worth living. It hurts to live everyday and continually consume and use the creations of other people having never contributed to society myself.

for the last few years, i’ve really battled this idea of creation. i recently started a (creatively leaning) uni course which has been an eye opener as to how much i actually enjoy the things i would avoid, like writing and reading, i thought those were things i wouldn’t need or that i didn’t have much to say. however it turns out that it must be necessary to visualise your thoughts rather than just keeping them as thoughts - we don’t hold the ‘good ideas’ to a higher regard in our minds, and so we forget them in the same time as the bad ones.
i think what im trying to say is that videos like these are super helpful to people who have battled this stagnation before. actually before this video i looked into buying a refillable leather notebook for this exact situation! not that it makes me more productive, but rather that i must take action for these things to start working.
this was a godsend. please carry on 🎉

The motivation I get from seeing my progress thru the time is really helping to get thru those rough patches. Stay inspired and good luck in your future project friends!

Thank you! I'm not meant to be a consumer, I'm meant to be a creator. The past 22 months of serious family matters, taking me away from my own home, meant only having moments with mobile phone camera to be creative, at least I had that.

I stayed up all night working on my Christmas video for my channel. I'm going to get back to working on after watching this and plan to post it today, Jan. 2nd (I'll probably have to crash and finish it, the thumbnail and whatnot when I wake up) but man, it's great to see more people taking life into their own hands over the past couple of years. With the internet and social media, yes there are a lot of down sides, but there are literally so many opportunities out there if you you just reach out and take them, or create the path for yourself. I made plans for myself this December to continue with some courses I bought a while ago on Udemy. Music production, math, video editing, communication skills, copy writing, business skills, learning a 2nd language...I could go on but, there is so much value out there, you just need to soak it up and use it for your creations in this world. I wish the best for everyone 💪 stay hard.

"Start small but start now." That was inspirational.

My tip for getting started with these things is that you should build a routine to stick to, but, crucially, you should base it around what you can manage on a bad day. It's very easy to overestimate where your enthusiasm for something will be after a month. By setting a low bar, scaling up when you have excess motivation is easy (and you will find yourself with excess motivation often so long as you take time to practice in ways that are truly enjoyable to you), but on the days where you're feeling out of it you don't risk a failure cascade for your routine or burning out by forcing yourself to stick with it. A lot of these things are a marathon more than a sprint, and you should really pace yourself as such. A year of moving forward a step at a time will often outperform someone who spends a month at a dead sprint before quitting.

Great message, I completely agree it's time to start creating! Planning to release a lot of new music on my guitar channel this year, and full speed ahead with the travel channel. Happy New Year 🎉

I’ve began consuming mostly (95%) music on TH-cam and the other (5%) videos like this. I’d like to start creating fully. I’ve come to many realizations the last 2 weeks because of a major family event and it’s made me rethink everything. Thank you.
