  • We had to put a new motor in our Stark Varg electric dirt bike first. Here is how it went.
    We know you wanted the next Stark Varg video to be a range test, but now that we have a complete new powertrain in the bike, we'll be able to start on the battery range test videos!

    Despite this motor replacement being an unfortunate situation, there are two things that I cannot deny about Stark Future:
    First, is their honesty. From the start, they haven't hidden anything from me, whether it be at the initial test in Spain or here as a customer.
    Second, they are on top of it. This controller fault happened on a Sunday afternoon, which was in the middle of the night in Spain. By Thursday morning, 4 days later, I had a complete new Stark Varg powertrain at my door step.

      100%.
      Things break, shit happens, it's life. Whether it be a mechanical failure or a human error, it sucks, but it happens in pretty much every industry, trade, product and service etc.
      What's important is how it's handled afterwards. And it sounds like Stark handled the situation well.
      Being honest. Not trying to cover ass / hide stuff. Covering parts that fail. Giving the right advice and information needed to perform the repairs in the event of a failure. Prompt service. Good communication. These are all signs of trustworthy company.

    I'm sure Electric Cycle Rider got a little bit of special treatment to get it there so fast. I mean the fast shipping had to cost them a lot but not as much as a bad review. This is the second inverter I have heard about going out on a Varg. Hopefully they learn from these issues and beef up the inverter/drivetrain to handle the way a dirt bike is ridden. I'm rooting for them as you can see by my name and I hope they sell a street legal version of the same bike. Or something very similar.

    I know range tests have to be the hardest content you make cause you can’t just range test it once….you have to do different levels and terrain…you think you could get us a track range test to compare to the trail??
    We appreciate the content and definitely understand that range testing is incredibly time consuming and it’s impossible to meet every persons range questions. The amount of uses people have for this bike is endless and we all wanna see our range question answered. I was interested in one of these bikes for enduro. They have been out now for a little while Seems all the TH-camrs get theirs first. The range is pretty important for people who want to go on some longer rides. Seems nobody can ride from 100% to 0% in the forest, just to see what exact range is for easy enduro riding. Maybe Stark isn’t allowing any TH-camr to do this. Stark trying to keep exact figures very foggy. The initial hype I had for stark is wearing off quickly. Marketing can only go so far. Give me a electric enduro bike that can cover at least 120km at 40hp and I’ll be interested, otherwise the current crop of ICE bikes are just too tempting.

    • @dansacco1964
      @dansacco1964 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its really hard to get a good representation of range because everyone's use is so different. By the numbers the 6kWh battery on this stark would only last 12minutes at the full 40hp. But who really does that? When was the last time somebody went full throttle for 12min with an almost stalled bike? A gallon of gasoline is 33kWh of energy. so by the chemistry alone the varg has 1/5 of a gallon of gas. But the electric drive is 4-5x more efficient. So Id say you can expect this bike to deliver at least the range/time that you would get out of 3/4 gallon of gasoline. That is a very rough estimate though.

    • @dcmotive
      @dcmotive ปีที่แล้ว

      Its alot of riding and very dependent on the terrain. I have ridden my fx for a few hours in the mountains and its down to only 60%, but Im tired and need a break. And when your tired do you really want to run out of juice way back where no one can help you out. its a tough measurement to make. I was surprised how much generation braking extended the battery life in mountains. In the flats or on a track where your just balls out, thats another story. Careening down steep grades actually charges the battery back up a bit if handled right.

    It can happen, as you said every brand can have problems with some bikes/parts so i'm not too worried (just an example, 2023 ktm sx 125 with blown motors after 2/3 hours with a broken rod....). The one think that angers me is the non-communication of stark with his customers. You had that quick responce because you give them visibility, they know the bike is good (i know too, i tested it), so they want a good image. But that's not the reality for us "normal" customers: guys that paid for the entire bike back in june and haven't see the bike yet and got always vague answers from Stark. That's not how you behave. I hope they figured prduction out as it seems they're starting making customers bike right now 😢

    People are overreacting to this issue. My Redshift & KTM Freeride both had battery and controller issues when I got on the first batch. It only made the bikes better when the issue was discovered and they warranted it. New bikes always have some kind of issues, especially a company from the ground up. I doubt you would get that kind of service from Sur Ron being an average customer on a high-end bike like this. My GasGas 300 starter kept going out and the head gasket would always peel away on the exhaust side. Turned out to be a metallurgy problem with the studs causing one of them to stretch and not hold torque. Anyway, people are just allergic to common sense nowadays.

The day was we would go on our 360 Husky's 3-4 hours, fill up and do it all again. I'm wondering if with the 80HP motor, if dialed down to 45 or so, would that last 4-5 hours at a pretty hard pace... ?

All the options we have available drastically limit my options as far as battery voltage. I prefer to have a high voltage battery, 360v nominal, using 75ah pouch cells, so it would end up being 100s1p, 360v 75ah = 27KWH. INSANE battery size for a motorcycle. I would have a range of roughly 300 miles on a single charge. I am just now really considering the Stark Varg powertrain, considering it has a nominal battery voltage of 360v and is an AC motor. Damn shame its 3500 bucks used, but my question is, is it worth it?

    Awesome. I wish electric bikes had selectable modes where you could choose between 2 stroke power pulses and 4 stroke power pulses. The reason I would like to see this is for proper traction in a given situation. Let's say a long slippery hill climb where a 4 stroke power delivery might give you better traction, you would choose it. Or in a hard enduro situation where a slow climb of slippery rock and root trail might be better suited to a mild low end 2 stroke torque situation would be selected. I think if we ever get there, that would be the ultimate electric bike !

      It's a new product. KTM Suron, every manufacturer had itt's share of problems but they would not give you the same warranty and service. You're overeating for nothing.

      He had the option of doing it himself, with continuing warranty instead of taking the MX to a shop so they could do it...

      Half of the comments about the Varg is about it being soulless and without a ICE, too easy.

  • @BERZERKERSV4

    It’s unfortunate that Stark released a unfinished product to placate their investors instead of the engineers…. A reasonably prudent person would believe that it’s not Stark’s “excellent” customer service but at this point it’s more akin to corporate damage control…

      What would the alternative be? They can't assume that every customer is an electrical engineer capable of fixing these things using their instructions. If you bought a new ICE bike and the motor quit I'm pretty sure they would do the same, no?

    A lot of big companies could learn from this. Unfortunately it seems the bigger the company gets, the less they care, and the more people are involved in every small decision. With startups, they usually have a small team of people wearing multiple hats.

    Tesla had all kinds of issues when they first introduced their cars. Ford I’d having all kinds of issues with their first model of the Maverick. Like you said, it’s a brand new company and a brand new product. Folks need to understand that when they buy the bike and temper their expectations accordingly.
