Amazing video! Here is a simple summary of the main steps I understood: 1. Create wireframes for existing products using Figma: - B2C (e.g., Instagram) - B2B (e.g., Rossignol) 2. Learn Figma alignment tools, components, and auto layout. 3. Learn design systems. 4. Start your personal product. 5. Build your portfolio. 6. Find a client product and go through it.
I really loved this video. I am a UX Designer in Ireland, I've been working professionally for 4 years, I have a degree in Interaction & Product Design and it's hard to find high quality UX videos on TH-cam, there is so much noise and short-cut advice on here that I feel is a bit of a scam and misleading. Thank you for creating non-clickbate, high value, non fear-driven content in this space. Subscribed!
"We really shouldn't design our life based on another person's timeline." That's something I really need to remember these days. I'm planning to start a career in UX design as a psychology graduate, and I've noticed that many INFJs are also venturing into UX design. Living in a third-world country, doing something I don't love, and being underpaid scares me. Starting in a new niche feels overwhelming because it’s such a big jump for me. I have the motivation and drive, but I lack discipline and direction. Thank you for the practical, down-to-earth, clear advice, Aliena!
Thank you for the info, but I hate that UX/UI changed to Product Design. As an Industrial designer aka Product Designer who designs physical products, makes looking for a job very difficult while having to sort through UX/UI posts. I think making it Digital Product Designer would be more appropriate.
Such a value packed video! The top 3 I want to further highlight: 1) Replicating screens: When I transitioned from a less visually focused company to one where design was key, using this method accelerated my skills. 2) Offering value when reaching out to potential clients is spot on. It's a philosophy that has helped me immensely in fostering valuable relationships within companies so you can influence what gets done. 3) Building a personal brand: It's like a secret weapon. It opened doors for me that I never expected, from landing speaking engagements at conferences to educational opportunities.
Dearest Aliena, I am a seasoned product designer from one of the Big Tech companies (hint hint: Windows 😊) I wanted to convey that you have an excellent way of presenting and mentoring , evident from this wonderful and super helpful video you created. All the tips that you gave were very relatable. You will be going places and have a golden path ahead! Good wishes from India and Seattle, Washington.
Thank you for this video. I'm 19 and i felt little bit overwhelmed today because i wanted to be a designer and i'm currently working on my portfolio and doing the UX course from google...so much to digest.
I just completed a year long UX/UI program through CareerFoundry. No luck even landing an interview after 3 months searching. It a tough market to get into right now. I don't believe the companies selling these training courses are being honest at all about how hard it will be to become a ux designer.
Hi, we're on the same boat. The amount of competition seems a lot for someone who just decided to start learning UX, but hey we're still young. One step at a time :)) maybe we can get connected 😉
It's definitely a tough competition this year considering a large influx of people started bootcamps. Connection, location, and experience are few of the highest hurdles we have to achieve. I'm not one to talk, but that's what I have deduced from all searching I have done. Regardless, I'm still eager to learn. Wish us luck!
The timing of this is impeccable! I'm completing your FastTrack UX Course this month and finally resigned from my teaching job to focus o UX for the next 3 months. Thank you so much, always, Aliena - for never gatekeeping and always sharing the wealth of knowledge with us all! xxx
i feel like i've been so lost trying to find a goal to reach for or figuring out what i want to do in general. i really needed to hear those words too. not to be too dramatic, but i teared up hearing you talk about being patient with yourself and your own process. it's just so refreshing hearing that it takes time rather than making it seem so fast and easy. thank you for sharing these words alongside some great advice for starting in ux. 🥺
I want to cry. i'm a graphic designer and last year my job (as many similar) became increasingly unstable, i had some basic background in UX/UI that i learned strictly through doing projects but nothing systematic, as when i first started my career ux/ui wasn't even a real job (in my country). I wanted to make a shift but felt like its too much too learn ,too big of a hill full of competition to tackle, but your advice was so realistic, so helpful and seems within my reach that i am just overflow with gratitude for making me feel less like ... well. Loser. Thank you for this.
Hi :) You are not a loser, that's for sure! Please try not to refer to yourself with such harsh language. Even though it can feel overwhelming with all the things you need to know and how it feels like everybody is better than you, in reality, we are all humans and we all have strengths and weaknesses. You don't need to know as much as you think you do. All those things with 'components' and all that kind of stuff are not something very important. I haven't seen a huge trend in which companies are now doing design systems and following UI Kits. Yes, they say that they are, but in reality, it's not very important. So don't feel like you need to learn all those things because 80% are even not aware that those things exist. Good luck :)
I am currently studying UI/UX design from google like you did and an additional UI design course to really upscale my UI skills. I am so grateful you made this video especially about the point on finding a client project while you work on your case studies/portfolio. Not gonna lie networking is difficult for me but I know I will get better at it. You really inspire me to create my own personal brand next year 2024 as I see there is so much potential and mental freedom to be had as apposed to the traditional applying to job boards!!
