  • You’ve got the mower, now it’s time to mow like a boss! Come along and join us from uncrating, to five-hour maintenance (including the first break-in oil change), to mowing some unrecommended tall grass, to… many other things. I bought this Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro Series LT 42" riding lawn mower with the Kohler 5400 Series 18 HP engine and the Tuff Torq K46 transmission a couple months ago this year (2018) and it’s been serving me well so far. What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses? Let’s explore together and rediscover the magic of one of my favorite pastimes.

    [I have fully captioned this video]
    Intro
    After thoroughly researching the competition, we decided to purchase this Cub Cadet 42” riding mower. It has all the features we’re looking for, plus a few extra amenities, and for the price, it fit our budget just right. In my previous video, we explored various features of the mower including the hydrostatic transmission, engine, turning radius, cruise control, hour meter, and full set of anti-scalp wheels. But what I find most aesthetically gratifying is the beautiful color and bold, square design lines that appeals to the all-American prowess and spirit.
    I chose to take my mower straight from a crate. This comes from my paranoia of floor model thrashings.
    Assembly
    Assembly doesn’t take long and it’s a fun little project to work on. It just takes a basic set of tools. Attached to the rear on the seat springs is the almighty pouch of instructions and accessories. Let’s take a closer look.
    Behold, the bag of wonders. These sacred documents hold everything you need to know to get started, so make sure to take a timeout and study them well. Let’s explore a bit further to see what we can find.
    This is the oil drain tube. This will greatly ease messy oil changes, which we’ll explore later in this video.
    An extra ignition key.
    This is an adaptor from a garden hose to the washout port for the mower deck. We’ll also explore this later in the video.
    The instructions include a quick step-by-step guide for installing all those loose parts and how to finish uncrating the mower.
    Here is the engine Owner’s Manual. We’ll be referring back to this later.
    This is the associated engine warranty guide.
    Here’s the mower warranty and part supplement guide.
    And at long last, the most important and informative document, the Operator’s Manual.
    Back to work now that we have the quick assembly guide.
    There is a lot of plastic on this machine, and some of the parts take a little finessing to snap together.
    Before starting the engine, make sure to check the oil level! You must add oil if this level is low.
    In my small engines and ATVs, I prefer to use fuel that does not contain ethanol.
    Let’s crank this over for the first time and see if it starts. And it does immediately and even without the manual choke!
    I was a little confused how this comes off the crate, so I just removed the front support and drove it off. The clearance was fine and the deck didn’t hit the wood.
    The operator’s manual indicates that the tires are over-filled for shipping purposes, whatever that means. So it’s important to check the sidewalls of the tires for the operating PSI of the tire. My rear wheels indicate 10 PSI. Because these are low pressure tires, I will be using a low pressure gauge that I use for my ATVs. Simply press on center of the valve step to relieve pressure, and ...

    I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

    I got my Cub Cadet XT2 in June of this year it's a 2019 42 in deck v twin Kohler 22 hp. I can't believe I waited so long to get it. I had a 2014 Craftsman
    one cyl Brigg's everyone said they were junk. I should have listened. In 2 years the motor exploded like they said. Anyway the Cub is so mush faster than the Craftsman. Mows better, Go over the yard one time it's done. I use to spend as much time going over it as I did mowing it with the Craftsman.
    As far as the motor goes, remember , a lot is good, more is better ,and too much is just right. Your gonna love it. I have about 10 hours on it so far.
    It seems to just get better. Now I water the 2 big yards that I mow, so they will grow, so I can mow them.

    My 15 year old Troy Bilt Pony is on its last leg. All of the tires leak, and the deck has tremendous rust hole in the top which I had to cover with two license plates. I've got to the point where I'm not going to pour money in this and unfortunately it just got its last set of blades. If I can make it through this season, owes me nothing. It's 15 years old and it's been trouble-free. It's had belts, maintenance, blades, and one set of spindles. I was looking at a new one at Home Depot and saw the Cub Cadet sitting next to it. The Cub Cadet and Troy-Bilt 42in mowers are $400 in difference of price. I think the Cub Cadet is a much nicer machine with hydrostatic drive and definitely more comfortable seat. I like the extra features and I love your review. I think you just made it easier to make up my mind for my purchase.

    As a Lawnmower Mechanic's perspective, I would HIGHLY recommend that you purchase the Cub Cadet MULCHING KIT.
    This kit will contain Mulching Blades, and a Steel Lip that attaches to the Front Lower Lip of your Deck to allow the Grass Clippings to spend more time under the deck to be chopped into smaller pieces to help feed and add additional nutrients to your lawn!
    Take care in Montana,

    Great video. And yes, the oil filter from factory was torqued down to 5 trillion foot pounds. My engine is different so I have the horizontal filter. Boy was that a chore getting that off. Its so close to the frame, no oil filter wrench would fit. I had to do the trusty ol stab a screw driver through it and twist it off that way.
    But yeah, I love my XT2. Currently got the mulching kit on it. Which reminds me, I'm so late on getting her prepped for this spring. Need to do all that was in the video, plus blade sharpening.

      @BigfootDadExploresMontana  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      BuNcH007 - 😂 If I could have thought of that line about the oil filter torque. I was in a conundrum because that's the trick I like to use too, funny enough, but I was trying to imagine the fallout I may have had during the video. But I do that with my truck's oil filter from time-to-time.
      Yes, time to prep for Spring because the time has arrived! Good luck, happy mowing, and thank you for the great comment!

      Hi, John - I'm glad you enjoyed it! That's exactly what the video is for - hopefully a useful tool. That way the water gets trapped in the deck and acts like a washing machine. You'll know it's working when the grass starts spewing out the side as a green slurry. Give it about 5 minutes until the water runs clean and underneath that deck will look alot better.

    There is absolutely no need to use premium fuel in your engine, Kohler calls for unleaded regular and that's all it needs. There has been a lot of testing and its been proven there's no advantage to using premium in an engine designed for regular 87 octane. I absolutely agree with using 100% gas if available in your area, you should use it, that alcohol mix is garbage, it degrades rapidly, attracts moisture out of the air, and can damage your fuel system if left in it. I've never had a problem leaving 100% gas with fuel stabilizer sit over the winter. I have one of those big string trimmers on wheels, due to having back surgery it hadn't been started in 2 years, it was stored with stabilized 100% gas, this week I got it out, started on the second pull!

      Hi Bigfoot Dad. It didn't seem to be too bad of a wobble to me; perhaps, I'm missing something. If so, It doesn't seem any worse than my Husqvarna. Bigfoot Dad, The damage issues got resolved with Cub Cadet, today. I called this morning (I didn't realize they are available 7 days a week). Other than having to wait on hold for 25 minutes, just to speak to someone, everything went smoothly. The rep was very accommodating, as he didn't request any damage photos. He simply asked how he could solve this for me. I mentioned the damage to the specific parts
      (all cosmetic); and, he is sending new parts via, UPS Ground. I then, removed the mower from the crate, set it up; and, it seems to be working perfectly, so far; however, I did notice a very strong plastic smell, after running it for about 10 minutes. Did you notice this, on yours?

When the stock blades were toast, I put Gator mulching blades on it, which I like. The oil and filter I change yearly with 10W-30. The washout port I never felt was worth a damn, so I never use it.

I really look forward to any future videos you perform on this awesome machine.

    Great video. We just purchased our first riding lawnmower yesterday and it’s the same as yours, thanks for answering all the common sense questions I had but didn’t have to ask. 😂 I remember when I was young I knew a friend from church that had a landscaping company and he would spray all the bottoms and painted areas of his equipment with WD-40 he said it made it easier to clean and stuff wouldn’t get stuck to it anyone have any thoughts on that. At 11:34 looks like you have the front wheels raised - what mount point did you use when jacking up the front wheels?
    Thanks again

    • @BigfootDadExploresMontana
      @BigfootDadExploresMontana  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, +AdvancedIT - I used the front hanger bracket for the stabilizer bar. There is probably a better way to do this and I suppose this could damage the bracket or cause alignment problems if it bends, however, the bracket seemed beefy enough and I was careful during the process. Hopefully someone can chime in for the best way to lift the mower. For the back end, it's so light that I can simply lift it by hand and place on jack stands one side at a time. Hope that helps!

    It appears we may have the same model. Mine is the 2017 version. Would you be able to take a few pics/short clip of the carb and governor linkages? Mine tends to sputter want to stall out with the PTO engaged after its warmed up. I replaced the entire carb system with OEM Kohler parts and it works better, but I believe something along the linkages is missing or incorrectly connected. GREAT VIDEO! Thanks Bigfoot Dad.

    In my experience, to use a washout port properly you need 2 things:
    1. A decent amount of water flow - most have this - I bring it up because in the country we don't have city level water pressure. AND
    2. You need to park the mower on a flat concrete surface like your driveway. Lower the deck all the way down to the concrete. This mower has a wheeled deck, so you cannot get the deck flush with the concrete, which is its own, additional problem.
    But if you can SOMEHOW create an area where the water cannot just immediately fall out of the mower deck but instead the blades are swirling it some before it gets to the side exit, it will wash the mower deck out. And leave you a soupy green mess all over your driveway. Cleanup that requires a cleanup = bad.
    In conclusion: Washout ports are a terribly flawed design that has no actual USEFUL function at all, except the HOPE it creates in a potential new buyer. It's why NOONE bothers to even try to use one.
    So, in my experience, I bought a Lawn Mower Jack. Much faster than removing the deck to do things like blade replacements or deck cleaning.

    • @BigfootDadExploresMontana
      @BigfootDadExploresMontana  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Freight Train - I'm not too fond of these washout ports either for the reasons you described. This is my second mower with a washout port and, well, it doesn't wash out. I like your idea of using a mower jack and just cleaning it out from underneath.

    • @ainttakenanyshit
      @ainttakenanyshit ปีที่แล้ว

      You will ALSO need a new deck in a relatively short time, spindles too. These "washout ports" should be renamed - "USE FOR A PREMATURE RUSTED DECK PORT" and SPINDLE BEARING FAILURE PORT......... A "water cleaning" does not remove all of the grass and what grass is still stuck to the deck will nicely hold/retain moisture to ENSURE a rusted deck in short order with the water being a spindle bearing's worst enemy....

    I watched a whole bunch of videos before purchasing my Cub Cadet. Some were better than others but yours were by far the best and probably the most influential toward me making my final decision. There was one in particular where the guy was just getting around to doing his first oil change after ten hours (VIOLATION #1). As he removed the oil filter and spilled it all over and ran off to find some paper towels (VIOLATION #2), I saw all the scratches and gouges he had already inflicted on his machine (VIOLATION #3 AND DISQUALIFIED!)

      😂 Thanks, patdthomas - I chuckled when I read this. I'm hoping to bring higher quality to some of these videos and I do watch some of them, but usually after I have already made my own (so I'm not influenced on my content). Some of the existing videos from other reviewers are pretty good though and I still have a long way to go. Stick with me and I'll keep trying to improve. I'm always up for suggestions on how to make these better as well. 😎

    • @BigfootDadExploresMontana

      Hi, Stacy - I bought the carbureted one because the engine is made in the USA. The fuel injected one is made in China and I'd like to see it out in the wild a couple years before considering it. Don't get me wrong - we have a Champion inverter generator, which is made in China, and it's great! But the brand has been tried-and-true for many years. And the fuel-injected engines on the Cub cadet could be a solid choice too, but time will tell. I hope that helps and good luck on your purchase! 👍

  • @fcburgner35
    @fcburgner35 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I always considered CC to be a high quality machine until I got one. Ditto the Kohler engine in it. Turned out to be wrong on both counts. Pulleys misaligned caused belts to come off so I had to take the deck off and do some drilling and welding to correct the problem, engine has a design flaw causing an oil leak that smells and the paint is coming off because there's no primer. Most brands have eliminated primer so they all start to rust after a couple of seasons. I would never buy another one.

    • @BigfootDadExploresMontana
      @BigfootDadExploresMontana  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Burgner - that sounds like a terrible experience! If I had one like that, I would be extremely frustrated and disappointed. Compared this to a John Deere today and one thing that struck me was the JD hood opens 90° and gets out of your way where the CC only opens to about 45° and leaves the corners sticking down for you to have to reach and see around. If everything’s on the backside of the engine I guess it could be ok. Is it not a nuisance?

      Hi, Jese - That's a good point. When I was changing the plug last year, I really had to work hard to get it out and back in again because the hood was in the way. I almost removed it so I could see what I was doing better. So, yes, that part was a nuisance. Otherwise it's been decent to work with.

    I just bought one of these and am going to tackle all of the pre-installation tomorrow. For someone who isnt exactly a handyman, what tools will I need to complete all of the necessary installation before I can get to cutting? Thanks for your video!

    I just bought a new 2021 Cub Cadet XT1 and the manual states to not use synthetic oil until you have changed the oil at least once using conventional oil. Your original video helped me choose the Cub Cadet so I thank you for that. I love it!

    If you think the oil filter was tight. Bad Boy mowers uses Thor’s hammer to tighten the blade bolts. I called and they confirmed it’s true.

    any particular reason you did not choose the EFI version?

    • @BigfootDadExploresMontana

      Hi, Sky1 - Yes, I had three reasons for not purchasing the EFI this round:
      1) It was $400 more
      2) I wanted to compare more apples-to-apples since Husqvarna didn't have an EFI equivalent in their lower price machines yet
      3) The EFI engines Cub Cadet are using are made in China. Not that that's a bad thing, but I'd like to see them out in the wild longer and understand their reliability record first.
      That being said, I think the EFI idea is awesome and I'd love to review one. Cub Cadet- are you out there reading this? 😂 Their marketing claims that these new engines can last up to twice as long, whatever that means.
      Hope that helps, and welcome aboard! 😎

    Can you do a video just like this one but for a 2005 LT 1022 CUB CADET Mower?
