Dawn, I’m really sad for you. But I also want you to know how helpful it is to someone like me seeing that a person so experienced as you can still have doubts and anxieties. In a strange way that’s made me feel a bit better about York marathon this year. Thank you ❤
Oh Dawn, my heart goes out to you. You’re a fantastic runner and earning an England vest is an enormous achievement. Enjoy your recovery and come back strong ❤
Dawn, I feel your pain. Marathons aren’t like any other distances, not like halfs and not like ultras. You have to fully invest in a marathon and never know what’s going to happen. This video created the most emotional response in me from any of the videos you two have released. Thanks for keeping it real, as these videos really help runners to see the commitment required for a marathon. Another day you might have got away with it, you just never know how a marathon is going to treat you. Keep on keeping on! ❤🙏
Thank you. 👍 Yes, one of the attractions of the marathon is the challenge. We all experience highs and lows, and at the time, it can feel very upsetting. You're right the investment to do a marathon is high, and in doing one, we need to understand that there's always a chance it won't go to plan. Sadly, on this occasion, it didn't. For me, I think if other things in my life to help me move on I'm glad I gave it a shot and am already looking to the next. 🙂👍
Running is only part of your identity....and finishing a marathon or not should not negatively impact your self esteem. You'll go again and that's how it should be. You have a great channel and you get to share your running journey with us all which we appreciate. I'd say the 11 mile walk/jog back to the car was the hardest run you've ever completed! People are interested in your journey more than your success or failures (or lack thereof). Keep the chin up and we look forward to the next set of videos!
Thank you. Yes, I agree my identity isn't defined by a marathon, and thankfully, I'm a resilient person who bounces back quickly and onto the next target. Focus is already on the next race.... 👍🙂
This was a very brave, honest and emotional video for you to make. So sorry it didn't work out for you on Sunday. But, you are a really strong and amazing runner and I hope you bounce back really soon. ❤
So sad to watch. But, not many people can say they got to wear an England vest! You had earned that right, you just had a bad day. A very open and honest video. Onwards and upwards ❤
Well done Dawn for the video. It's not easy to show the times running doesn't go the way we want it but it is part of running. Thank you for showing this side of your running journey.
good on you Dawn, takes a lot of courage to make a video of a bad marathon day, the day before any marathon is hard on the nerves, but it makes it 10 time worse when you know the body isn't 100% any sign of injury day before, total nightmare, with running & marathons there is super highs & super lows & everything in-between, I'm super grateful that I did my marathon pbs last year at the age of 59 but me personally now that ive turn 60 feel that its a whole new game, its hard for a 30 year old to run a marathon, running a marathon in your 60s is a challenge that not many people would understand unless they are 60+ rest up, keep on keeping un & enjoy your next adventures
Thanks, Reece. Yes, they do feel harder now. I wonder if that's also because I'm no longer fresh at them and also have experienced those high and low points, so know what's to come.... The beauty of the marathon is we never know what kind of day it's going to be. When it goes right, the feeling is amazing... At some point, I'll do my last one, but I now have unfinished business...🙂
@@tworunningbrooms yep its been eye opening learning interesting experience for me watching you & Johns dedication & passion as the running series have progressed, cool 🙂
Sorry to see this didn't go the way you wanted Dawn. You did amazingly to even get to wear the England vest and this is such an important and honest account, it will be an inspiration to many others as it is to me. Keep inspiring us and I know you'll be back strong, ready to take on the next challenge
Thanks, Ben, for your kind words. Yes, im pleased with my English Masters qualifications and look forward to future races in the vest. I have unfinished business...🙂
A hard video to watch Dawn. No one here wanted to see this to be the outcome of all your hard efforts. Even through your low points Dawn, please don’t forget you inspire us all. Especially for us female runners, you are showing us that running can continue and age is no reason to stop achieving. You’re strong and will be back ❤
Thanks for your kind words, Rachel. I did think about not putting it out, but running isn't always the high we want it to be... I have plans moving forward. 🙂
I was feeling for you when you went past on mile 24 where I was marshalling and you gave a signal that you weren't having the best day when I cheered you on. Thank you for your insight on this and when you bounce back from it, i'm sure it will help alot of us viewers who will no doubt have chances of similar experiences on race days. All the best & thanks again for making the videos.
I'm so sorry Dawn, you had worked really hard for this. I totally get that you really wanted to stand on the start line and give it a go despite the doubts, you had earned this England vest after all. I hope you're recovering well and will get to use the fitness you've gained at a future race soon.
Great effort Dawn! Lovely to catch up with you guys at the Redcar Half, where you looked so strong. Not every day is '"your day", especially so with marathons. Look forward to your next adventure. 🧡
Thanks, Steve. Yes, the highs and lows of running... We cherish the good days and move on from the bad, hopefully learning a thing or two along the way...🙂
Thanks for sharing the running challenges as well as the successes. A hard video to make I’m sure but appreciated. Admiration for your resilience in looking forward 😊
Thanks, Lisa. Yes, it was difficult, but I felt that those who were tracking me or who had supported the journey should know how it went. I always try to remain positive and take away the pluses. I've done that and am now focused on my next goal. 🙂
Oh Dawn, I’m absolutely gutted for you, what awful timing for a flare up, thanku for making this vlog it couldn’t have been easy, it just wasn’t ur day, but it will be, I know it was an important occasion for you but you have banked the training and ur day will come - all the best Dawn - keep on keeping on ❤
Dawn, frustrating, gutting, annoyingly, upsetting are all words you use but you summed it up at the end. Keep on keeping on and inspiring us lot to run too.
Sorry to see this Dawn and now exactly how you feel. I had the same at my first masters marathon and ended up walking jogging last 12 ish miles as could not find the sweep bus. Life goes on and wishing you all the best in the future 🙏🏼
Oh Dawn, I'm gutted for you! It has been such a positive training block for you. You made it to the start line (more than me this weekend!) and hopefully there will be a new start line for you soon!
Thank you so much for making this video - I could see how hard it was for you and I hate it that Chester Marathon didn’t go right for you 😞 it weirdly makes me feel a bit better about the races I’ve done that haven’t gone how I hoped they would and knowing it happens to everyone at some time helps me. I'll keep on keeping on and will carrying in tuning in to your channel 😊
Oh, that's really unfortunate. What a tough break! I'm genuinely sorry . I haven't been following your videos closely lately, except for the updates on Strava. I have seen the sessions you've been tackling, and I thought you were in great shape. It sounds like you were, but that day just didn’t go as planned because of the issues you faced. Kudos to you for pushing through despite those challenges. I really hope this doesn't shake your confidence in marathons; I find them to be such a captivating experience. You mentioned in your video that sometimes the mind can be a tricky thing. I truly hope you stick with your plans for Brighton next year, and don’t forget to sign up for London GFA, as the registration opens today!
Thanks. I'm pretty resilient, and although this one was not good, it's not put me off. 🙂 I'm not signing up for London GFA, but I look forward to Brighton. 🙂
You did the right thing, giving it a go and the right thing stopping when you did but the options you were given were very poor, I'm not sure what I would have done in that situation. I had my worst race ever at the end of September. You are not alone, Dawn. It was hard seeing you struggling but other runners will learn from this so thank you. Keep on keeping on! 👍
Thank you. Yes, the options were not good. I thought there may be another option of a lift back somewhere other than the sweep bus, but no. Luckily John was out on the course on his bike and was not left worrying at the finish as I didn't have a phone on me and even if I had done it would not have worked as there was no signal the whole time I was in Chester. 😅 If I'd been an emergency, I would've got attention, apparently. I'm so glad I wasn't!! Anyway, yes keep on keeping on. 🙂
Hi Dawn, I saw you and John just after you’d stopped I think, on the loop before Holt. As you say Marathons are tough and starting with only one fully functioning leg is a big ask. All the best with your recovery and reflect on the fact you qualified for England Masters rather than one bad day at the office……👍🏻
Randomly came across this video, as a novice runner who has just got into doing 5km park runs (very novice). This is a great video, I'm sorry your sciatica played up. your comment "I'm down, but not out." is very inspirational, the video was perfectly edited. You've gained a sub, thanks for highlighting that not every run is destined to be completed, even as well as experienced runner.
Thank you for your kind words and for subscribing. I'm glad it has helped you to see that running does bring lows, and it is most definitely okay to make a decision to stop if that suits you and your circumstances. Running is wonderful, and I absolutely love doing it. The lows do help to really appreciate the good runs. Hope you grow to love it as much as I do. #keeponkeepingon 🙂
Excellent video on a difficult run. Kudos for showing the lows as well as the highs. Remember you’ve banked the training, you feel the benefits in future races. Keep on,keeping on Dawn
Thank you. Yes, I felt it was important that folk see what it's like when it doesn't go right. I've had a good year til this, so it's just one to put in the running low bucket. I'm on with new plans...🙂
The road marathon is such a brutal event. You made the most logical decision on the day but it doesn't dimish the frustration. Hope recovery goes well and that the next steps forward become clear.
Sorry this happened Dawn. Have a hamstring injury with exact same symptoms having to take a break from running just as i was making real progress. So frustrating and upsetting as i feel my fitness slipping away. Hope you get back well again soon. Loving the videos, inspiring me.
Brave running Dawn, well done for even starting. Hopefully you’ll soon be back out there. 🤞 It’s so difficult with these conditions that you think have gone quiet but always return eventually. A blip in the road, I’m sure you’ll be back before you know it. Take care though.
Oh Dawn this broke my heart to see you upset! You worked so hard and wanted it so much. I definitely think the pressure on yourself, especially with TH-cam watching, contributed to the DNF. This reminds me a bit of Ben and Mary Bridges from This Happy Messy, story after their Boston marathon. You are such a talented and experienced runner, a real inspiration and role model for women, I am sure this will make you even stronger athlete and coach. Can’t wait to see you back loving to run and race. Thank you for putting the video out, I know it must of been so hard, but it is so relatable, running is a b**ch. Look after yourself
Thank you. Yes, at times, running stinks. 🙂 When it goes right, it's amazing and brings such highs. When it goes wrong and after months of dedicated training, it does knock you. Thankfully, I've always been quite resilient, and after initial and immediate emotional response, I have looked at my year as a whole and seen such positivity. My plans are already on moving forward. Thanks for your kind words. 😊
How you coped with an 11 mile walk back I do not know. You must have gone over the disappointment of the day a thousand fold. You've worked so hard to achieve your goal, so much time and effort. I really feel for you. You're a star runner and I know that you'll be back running in no time at all. Stay strong.
Thanks, Steve. The journey to the finish wasn't the best... I did ask a few marshals along the course if there was a shorter way back. Sadly not. I still got back before the sweeper vehicle, so I'm glad I didn't wait for that!
BIG BIG HUGS Dawn keep that chin up girl, running as you know is for life my lovely you ran the race offered to you on the day with all the extraneous issues that runners experience.
Dawn, I really feel for you, these are difficult times. I experienced pretty much the same at London this year and I was gutted. But of course we get over these things and now I’m back running as well as ever, you will be soon too.’ Keep on keeping on ‘ has never sounded so true!
Aww Dawn was so sorry for you as I can tell how much the England vest means to you. You are amazing and so inspiring, relatable and brave for posting this video. I look forward to seeing you smash out your goals in the future. .
I've had my fair share of bad days. It's so disappointing. But I think of them as framing the good days. With out the bad, there would be no good, just the same. Friday evenings only exist on account of monday mornings. You'll be back, and your next success will be even sweeter because of this. I remember seeing you and saying hello. PB today for me, but I came in the last 300 at Copenhagen mara with a field of over 10,000 runners😂..
Gutted for you. You had an amazing training block, and i enjoyed following along. I'm a little ypunger than you, but you inspire me to what is possible as O get older. Even though I'll never have the talent and abiliy that you have, it shows we can still keep performing well regardless of age. Don't suppose you have considered Yorkshire Marathon? Not the England Masters race you wanted, but could perhaps reward yourself with a good marathon whilst still benefitting from your training.
Chin up Dawn - we all have great and not so great races. I’ve done what feels like the walk of shame twice due to extreme cramp - but it’s made me stronger, more determined and indirectly made those races somewhat memorable (when the dust has settled). Onwards and upwards, speedy recovery!
Good effort Dawn ! Still a great video and Good footage from John. You've had some great results already in 2024 I'm sure you're around of that. Chester's not the easiest to do with a niggle with those 13 or so rolling hills. You could always do what I did a couple years back and jump into the Yorkshire Marathon in a couple of weeks (was a disaster for me though 😂 )
Hiya Dawn so sorry it didn’t go well for you. I said hello and told you that you looked good for a 3:30! Hope you come back stronger and England masters again! It’s an achievement in itself.
I am so sorry you had a flare up Dawn. You deserved to have a fantastic run after all the training and preparation. Keep working and come back stronger. Really sorry, take care 😞
Hey Dawn , everyone who runs understands and stands with you emotionally in your disappointment . You'll recover quick we're sure . Best wishes , be well, be strong from two Dereham Runners who hail from Penistone. Helen and Martin
Unlucky Dawn I know the feeling my first London this year and I got injured at mile 10.I found I could still walk ok so a long 16mile walk in to the finish
I am sure there are so many of us that can relate to having a bad marathon experience and it can take quite a while to get over the disappointment. I am so sorry that you experienced that set back at Chester but I believe you are a very strong minded lady and will after time reflect and come back with a positive mindset. Sciatica is painful! You will have plenty more opportunities to fulfil you undoubted potential in the marathon if you so wish and I would recommend that you use the fitness and strength you have built in your marathon training to go and have a really good run at one of the shorter distances which will help east the disappointment at this time. Finally reflect on the advice you would give one of your runners that you coach, I am sure you wouldn’t advise giving up and I am sure you won’t. Marathons are touch but that’s what makes it even better when you get one right! Stay strong you wonderful lady. X
Thanks, Trevor. You're right, I don't stay down long. It's part of the highs and lows of running! I'm already planning and have some great races coming up. 👌
Gutted for you Dawn. Kudos to you for making the start line for the Marathon as I would mostly probably have bailed out after the parkrun. You can look back on a good years running with a sub 21 5K and I seem to recall you had a pretty good marathon back in the spring?
I was also at Chester, first time to the city. I really felt for you Dawn, sciatica is the bane of my life and as you say it comes and then it goes but it’s definitely no fun when you’re in the throws of it. I wonder if the ups and downs of the hills flared it up more and a flatter course would have kept it at bay more. Anyway, sending love
Very sorry you didn’t finish Dawn, we invest so much time and effort into these things but we take a step back, reset and we go again and we never give up.
Gutted for your Dawn... I know how hard you worked for this one. Thankfully one race doesn't define a season of running and you've had a stellar year... rest up and bounce back stronger!
So sorry Dawn. These things happen to the very best, as this proves. I’ll make a couple of points if that’s ok. From the outside looking in, your preparation looked meticulous and perfect so that training will put you in good stead. Always another day and another race. The pre-race nerves and anxiety are natural and I get this every single time. The pressure and expectations we feel from others and also pressure put on ourselves, fuel the anxieties. I’m wondering if that played a part in your decision to stop. Always think a slow finish, is better than no finish. If you had a 11 mile trot then think you should've used those 11 miles on the course, and then finished the final 2 miles to get medal. Regarding race strategy, 8min/mile for first 20, and going for it in final 10k was a risk, when you consider the hills in final section. Sorry it was such a difficult day but you’ll be back so try not to worry.
Thanks, Colin. When I stopped, it was at the point of the course where there was an out and back 2 miles section. I didn't realise at that specific point, I would have to get all the way back on foot. Once I spoke to the marshal a bit further on, I'd already missed that section of the course. I would've had to go back down the course to do the section I had missed. At that point, it was the last thing I wanted. But yes, in hindsight, I could've walked/jogged to the finish if I'd not missed a section of the course trying to find out how to get back. It was not an easy decision or a day I enjoyed. But as runners, yes, we expect to have highs and lows. Also, as an experienced runner myself I see nothing wrong with my race strategy for that day. On paper my marathon pace should be around 7.40. 8mm was comfortable and the strategy I chose that day was my decision based on what I knew of my training and how I felt on the day. I move on...👍
They can be great, but yes, there are certainly a lot of things that can go wrong. I'm so glad I've experienced both the good and the bad, so I know they aren't always bad. 🙂
Dawn, I’m really sad for you. But I also want you to know how helpful it is to someone like me seeing that a person so experienced as you can still have doubts and anxieties. In a strange way that’s made me feel a bit better about York marathon this year.
Thank you ❤
Thank you, and I'm glad you can see that anxieties are very much a normal pre marathon thing. 🙂 I hope you have a great experience at York!
Oh Dawn, my heart goes out to you. You’re a fantastic runner and earning an England vest is an enormous achievement. Enjoy your recovery and come back strong ❤
Thank you for your kind words. I'm on with future plans. 🙂

Damn. Marathons/running can be so cruel. You're obviously a great runner to get on the team. Nobody can take that part away. ❤
Such a shame. I feel for you, Dawn. You'll no doubt come back stronger, but what a horrendous day, as you said. Keep on keeping on ❤

It’s so difficult with these conditions that you think have gone quiet but always return eventually.
Your honesty and attitude in light of such disappointment is commendable. Looking forward to your next post marathon vlog :)
Thank you. 👍
Everything happens for reason , good luck with recovery and future running
Thank you. Yes, I believe it does. 🙂
Sorry to hear that marathon day didn't go as planned. Remember that you've had some incredible results along the way! Keep on keeping on. 🏃🏼♀️
Thank you. Yes, I'm pleased with how my year has gone in general. I am on with new plans. 🙂
BIG BIG HUGS Dawn keep that chin up girl, running as you know is for life my lovely you ran the race offered to you on the day with all the extraneous issues that runners experience.
Thanks. Yes, I'm on with future plans. Onwards, as they say...🙂
@@tworunningbrooms keep on keeping on xx
they can't all be good. you will be back and better xx
Thanks. Yes, agreed. 👍
I am sorry that this marathon did not went the way you wanted to. Don’t let this bring you down. Good luck for the next one!
Thank you. I'm on with future plans. 🙂
Dawn, I really feel for you, these are difficult times. I experienced pretty much the same at London this year and I was gutted. But of course we get over these things and now I’m back running as well as ever, you will be soon too.’ Keep on keeping on ‘ has never sounded so true!
Thank you. Yes, we move on, and as runners, we sometimes become stronger from the low points! I'm on with new plans. Xxx
Ah Dawn, thank you so much for making this ♥
Yes, sometimes it's right to show the lows as well as the highs of running.
Aww Dawn was so sorry for you as I can tell how much the England vest means to you. You are amazing and so inspiring, relatable and brave for posting this video. I look forward to seeing you smash out your goals in the future. .
Thank you. 👍
Well said. 🙂 Oh, and a huge well done on the pb! 👏👏
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, it's a thought... 🙂
Chin up Dawn - we all have great and not so great races. I’ve done what feels like the walk of shame twice due to extreme cramp - but it’s made me stronger, more determined and indirectly made those races somewhat memorable (when the dust has settled). Onwards and upwards, speedy recovery!
Thank you! Yes, I'm not the first and certainly won't be the last. I have plans...🙂
Aww dawn I’m really sorry. You’ve worked really hard and it’s been great to watch. It happens…. Chin up, and go again ❤
Thanks. You're right it certainly does happen. I'm planning the next one. 🙂
Thank you! 👍 I hope you had a great race and achieved your goal. 🙂
Well done for doing all the training and getting to the start line. All hard work to be proud of.
Yes, thank you. 😊
I am so sorry you had a flare up Dawn. You deserved to have a fantastic run after all the training and preparation. Keep working and come back stronger. Really sorry, take care 😞
Thank you. 👍
Sorry to hear this Dawn, I saw you stood at the 13 mile point 🥰
Thank you. I hope you had a great marathon! 👍
@@tworunningbrooms thank you, yes PB3.39, some those hills though
Hey Dawn , everyone who runs understands and stands with you emotionally in your disappointment . You'll recover quick we're sure . Best wishes , be well, be strong from two Dereham Runners who hail from Penistone. Helen and Martin
Thank you. 👍
Weldone D you'll be back wearing the England vest again
Thank you. That's the plan. 🙂
Unlucky Dawn I know the feeling my first London this year and I got injured at mile 10.I found I could still walk ok so a long 16mile walk in to the finish
Oh, that's rubbish!
Thanks. Yes, a fair marathon in the spring and some very pleasing results for other distances.👍 We move on...🙂
I was also at Chester, first time to the city.
Thanks. Hope you had a great day! 👍 🙂
Yes, the hills didn't help as that's when it pulls most. On the flat I could deal with it more... Onwards...🙂
Very sorry you didn’t finish Dawn, we invest so much time and effort into these things but we take a step back, reset and we go again and we never give up.
Thanks. Yes, agreed. 🙂
Gutted for your Dawn... I know how hard you worked for this one. Thankfully one race doesn't define a season of running and you've had a stellar year... rest up and bounce back stronger!
Thanks, Andy. 👍 Some races just aren't meant to happen. Yes, I try to keep in mind all the good performances and move on with my future plans. 🙂
Commiseartions Dawn. You will come back stronger. Great honest video ?
Thank you. 🙂
Dawn what a hard video to make but it shows courage to show the highs and lows.
Sorry it never went to plan but you will be back I am sure. X
Thanks. I certainly will. 🙂
I'm really sorry you have to pull out marathon Dawn Marathon are very tough Sciatic Suffered that . I'm sure you will bounce back.
Thanks. I'm sure I will, too. 🙂
I move on...👍
So sorry you didn't get to finish. Sciatica is not fun. Onwards and upwards now.
Thank you. 🙂
That was a hard watch. Sorry it turned out that way.
Thank you. 👍
I hate marathons; too many things can go wrong!
They can be great, but yes, there are certainly a lot of things that can go wrong. I'm so glad I've experienced both the good and the bad, so I know they aren't always bad. 🙂
