My husband was in the military for the GI Bill and I was in college and working, too, when we married. We both had newer, reliable cars and ended up min a one bedroom apartment. We had a good bed and dresser and were gifted a brand new dining room table with four chairs. However, other than a television, we had no living room furniture. We used two folding lawn chairs. We refused to ask family for help and no one offered us anything to help get us started. God, we were so young. These kids are lucky.
It looks very homey. So comfortable and cozy. Who wouldn't love to sit there and chat, watch the football game, or even quietly read a book. It's gorgeous Sherry!!

@hemahaw1 I agree. Mom and Madison created some good memories and hopefully bonded. I hope Madison isn't one of the "entitled" feeling kids that truly don't have the slightest concept about living at or below their means, because they've never had to "make do" or "go without" as previous generations have had to endure. Some may have gone through the "Great Recession" but not the "Great Depression" both of which were extremely tough to go through. It developed a wonderful sense of gratitude and a resilience with extremely creative solutions on how to "get by" and a good part of the time, learn to be thankful for "a roof over your head, a bed under your butt (even if it was a mattress full of straw on the floor piled with old blankets for a pallet), food in your stomach (even if it was the same food EVERY meal) you at least weren't going hungry, a pot to pass in, and a window to throw it out." Which in those times, especially the "Great Depression" was considered being well off. It's kinda scary to wonder what would happen if the kids that didn't experience either Era would do if that or worse were to happen again, with their feeling of entitlement fully ingrained. Even though my kids grew up lower middle class, meaning sometimes it was paycheck to paycheck with needs met but no room for wants, even they didn't have it hard like I did having only one working, uneducated parent, a disabled, stay-at-home mom, whom both had lived through the Great Depression and had no way to better our lives. But as kids we didn't realize we were living a good deal below the poverty line because we had both parents raising us, food, a house, bed, clothing and shoes so we had no idea that we were poor. Once we got older, like high school and especially college age we learned then that it wasn't like that for other families and desired to do more for ourselves and our children and Grands. But no matter the income level growing up as long as your parents weren't wealthy, all kids figured out there were people that had it better than they did and worse than they did and there was gratitude taught at any economic level cause either parents or grandparents or both had survived the Great Depression.
This style brings in a feel of cozy. So many interesting pieces and areas to keep the eye moving. Lucky couple to have you Sherry and your creative talent.😊
You did a fantastic job, (I knew you would) and I love how appreciative they both were. It is very hard decorating someone else's space, but you seem to have nailed it.
Oh, Sherry!!!! I adore the room!!! I could not imagine having such a "finished" looking room at their age. Heck, I am almost 69 years old, and I still don't have such a room as this! Oh, how blessed they are to have you in the family!!!
You created a wonderful room that looks like its been collected over time. I'm sure they can't wait to come home to this cozy space. You worked your magic again.
You did such a beautiful job. That was a great idea for a Kleenex box, I’ll have to remember that. You have a handsome son and beautiful daughter in law.

Everything looks professionally decorated! Amazing that nothing was new or expensive!. Be proud. Kids give your parents a brunch as thanks and show off to the other 3!📞👩🆗🙈☺
This is beautiful and so surprising that young folks would be drawn to this style. I'm an old gal and I would be very comfortable in those surroundings. Great job.
Wow Sherry! You hit the mark! It looks so comfy and homey. Looks like they’ve lived there for years, and curated their finds over time. Yet you were able to raid your basement, utilize what they had and hit the the thrift stores to pull it all together. How wonderful for them!!! Win win! ❤ Oh and I think my favorite is the houndstooth chairs. It’s no wonder why you saved them all this time! And that painting was a gorgeous steal and addition! Comfort at its finest!
Oh, thank you, Bren! I was actually really glad to move some things out from my basement. I hope to get the storage room a bit more organized, so I can show it in an upcoming video!
When my husband and I started out we had donations from family and finds from local auctions and some we brought from England. A lot of the finds came from the estate of Pearl Hutton, she is still in our lives 40 years later as my daughter wanted them for her place. They may be over 70 years old but look good with the new bookcases from IKEA. We never achieved the wonderful ambiance that you created. ❤
I have a "finish house" but you can come in anytime and decorate for me. It keeps evolving and I am always changing my style. I love your combination of new, thrift, and unexpected.
The room turned out beautifully! So professional and curated. It only needs one thing, a rug in the middle to ground the space. I hope Madison and your son appreciates the fabulous and professional work you did for them. They are indeed fortunate!❤
I agree, a dark rug in the middle of the room would lend itself extremely well to the original inspo photos that Madison had, particularly since painting the walls is likely taboo.
Come on, kids, show more enthusiasm! I would have been squealing with delight. Sherry, I don’t see how you made everything work, given the mish-mash of items. Wow! What an impressively lovely room.
Thank you, Donna! I wish I could have had a big reveal, but the kids are living there already, so they saw the room’s progress throughout the week. But, I agree-they could have shown a tad more enthusiasm! 😜

Well Sherry, you hit the ball out of the park once again! You are a gal like me. I check out the wall art first thing wherever I go thrifting! The pieces you chose were stunning! The living room is definitely magazine worthy! You are a “master” decorator in my book! One would never know that this was mostly thrift store bargains. Superb job!!
You've managed to create a room that looks like it's been evolving for thirty years. And thank heaven you didn't distress anything. I'm always stunned to see "finished" projects with thrifted items that intentionally look so beat up that I'd consider flipping them to look freshly painted.
What a transformation and I LOVE the houndstooth chairs! The whole room turned out just beautiful and I’m sure they both are so very grateful for your wonderful design eye! ❤
Sherry, you gave them such a gift with your remarkable talents! I can just picture the Christmas tree in front of the window on the bookcase wall. I hope they keep up the tradition of thrifting and remaking furniture and decor as they explore their style.

What a blessing you are to your children and their partners! I hope that young lady appreciates you like we do!! It turned out fabulous. @@CanterburyCottageif you haven’t gotten around to repairing yet… one thing I’ve successfully used to repair a canvas from the back side is adhesive-backed fabric medical tape. If you are worried about the adhesive, you could possibly use plain gauze with gesso as others suggested. If you are worried about it being too square and still making an outline, you could also cut it to an irregular edge. With that painting, it should be easy to disguise any edge lines in the foliage. :)

The room looks really good! I love decorating with second hand furnishings too. Except for my beds and sofas everything in my house is second hand. Even most of my clothes!
What an inspiring video, Sherry! It's amazing how talented and resourceful you are. It's a beautiful room! How terrific that you used your son's girlfriend's preferred colors in the room. 🧡 💚 🧡 You are no doubt the kindest mom.
I love the notion of an “ updated grandma style!” My style too. Antiques, arts, books, cabinets for collectibles, and the ever challenging problem of placing the TV so it doesn’t overpower the room are the things I put in my living room. Thanks for the video. I’m inspired.

Definitely one of your talents! I love how you can pull these makeovers together from a stash! Great details and finishing touches. Love that painting! Just a little curtain hack… let that hem out and you’ll get about 3” more in length if you want to hang curtains a little bit higher!
Hi Sherry, I love this living room. It looks like it was curated over time. The room is so cozy ! The mirror gallery is cool and the bookcases were just perfect for their spot ❤
Spencer and Madison are fortunate to have your expertise Sherry! What a gorgeous room, so inviting!! I love the book cases, hounds tooth chairs, and how you used the quilt in so many ways! Thanks for sharing 🙂❤️
Great job Sherry and Madison! Considering you have a maximalist style Sherry, you did well keeping it more open for the kids (which is likely more preferable) They are lucky to have a talented mom and "mil" to help them out😊 OH! And another reason to never throw anything out!
I'm so glad your son moved out of his brother's basement so we got to see you do this again! I love the room. I have to try to create a couple of rooms in my home over the next few months with an almost zero budget so I was just thrilled to see you put this together so beautifully. Now I'm super inspired. Thank you! 🙂
My home is mostly thrifted, and my wardrobe is mostly thrifted ...it's the only way to go! You both did such a wonderful job, must have been so much fun. Can't wait to see how you decorate it for Christmas! 😉
Thank you so much!! I need to spend more time shopping for clothing. I just hate taking the time to try things on, so I sometimes buy clothing that doesn’t fit! 😜
Sherry, i have said it before and I will say it again. You are truly amazing and your taste in home decoration is impeccable. I only wish I owned a house that you could decorate! Love your videos! You never disappoint.
Draping over the chair backs and even the lower front are my favorite easy the ngs to change for seasons. It is such a lovely shade for the sofa and chairs. Wonderful way to teach your children how to do things in a pinch. Your total expense was less than $500!😊❤

How fortunate for them that they had such an expert with so many extra items to give them to use and help so much to bring that room to such a wonderful finish! I love that Madison has such great tastes too and seems to like DIY herself. Sherry you did a great job and I am sure they are so appreciative, as I know when I started out it would have been a dream come true to have someone like you to work on my space. Such a pretty space!
Sherry this room is absolutely stunning. What an awesome job you’ve done. I’m sure your Don and his partner are over the moon having this room to come home to each day. All my life I’ve wanted a room like this and I can never manage to get anything like this no matter how I decorate it. They are so lucky to have you and your expertise at decorating. You’re a great mum and mil. My mother in law ( Ivey had 2 ) would rather have criticised me rather than ever offer any help. You’re amazing.
I know your not Madison's mother-in-law(yet), but your are the dream mom-in-law. You aren't just nice for your son's sake, but you seem to welcome the young ladies in with an abundance of kindness & love. Sharing your stash of decor & furniture probably blessed Madison so very much. What a great example of an older lady coming alongside a younger lady.
I think it's a lovely room. It's not matchy-matchy and it feels like a warm retreat rather than a showroom. Perfect.
I think it is the color scheme. Hard to get excited about these colors, i think

IF this IS the "Grandma" Look then "Grandma's" Got Cash, Class and Style. Everything in the space looks New and Interesting. How Wonderful it must be to have YOU as a Mom and Designer. WOW 👍
Totally agree with you on gallery walls! What a lovely room
Thanks, Karen! 😊
Again, I cannot believe how creative and talented you are. You absolutely amaze me! Seriously, I cannot believe how great you are!❤❤❤
You really hit one out of the park on this room! Love it!
Thanks so much 😊
Ok.This room is PERFECT! So stylish, so cozy, and so full of visual interest. You are literally the mother / moths in law we all hope and wish for!
Love this video
Dang I was looking forward to seeing Spencer too. We wish them lots of fun, happiness & love in their new place ❤
Thank you, Nancy! He is growing a mustache, and it looks bad, so he didn’t want to be on camera! 🥸
Those are two lucky kids to have a mom like you to put their living room together. It's beautiful! It's a warm, welcoming, comfortable room now.
Oh, thank you! (Hopefully, Spencer reads this!😜)
I love the look of that room. It is so pleasant and relaxing to look at.
Oh, thank you, Shelly! 😊
I love the notion of an “ updated grandma style!” My style too. Antiques, arts, books, cabinets for collectibles, and the ever challenging problem of placing the TV so it doesn’t overpower the room are the things I put in my living room. Thanks for the video. I’m inspired.
Me too - I think that encapsulates my own style lol
Really beautiful, looks like a fall color palette 😊
They're lucky to have you doing this for them. I hope they appreciate it!
Room is gorgeous...complete transformation !!! I hope they realize how lucky they are to have you Sherry(fabulous decorator & your stash)! I love the mirror wall and the chairs you contributed. Great job as always ! 😺
Thank you so much, Hope! They are really happy with the makeover and are ready for me to decorate their kitchen next! 😜
This is absolutely gorgeous, Sherry. I hope your son and Madison appreciate all you have done for them. It just shows that you don't need a lot of money to have a classy finish🌷
You're always up to a smashing room transformation! Spencer and Madison are so fortunate to have your assistance in completing this cozy transformation. Well done, you!
Thanks so much, Brenda!!
Definitely one of your talents! I love how you can pull these makeovers together from a stash! Great details and finishing touches. Love that painting! Just a little curtain hack… let that hem out and you’ll get about 3” more in length if you want to hang curtains a little bit higher!
You did a great job on their new living room! It looks so cozy!
What a blessing you are to your children. You've used your skills in both of their homes now and they do not look like first time homes. Well done!
Hi Sherry,
I love this living room. It looks like it was curated over time. The room is so cozy !
The mirror gallery is cool and the bookcases were just perfect for their spot ❤
Thank you so much, Mary!😊
The room looks awesome...it's simply gorgeous...great job...
Spencer and Madison are fortunate to have your expertise Sherry! What a gorgeous room, so inviting!! I love the book cases, hounds tooth chairs, and how you used the quilt in so many ways! Thanks for sharing 🙂❤️
Thank you so much, Madonna! They are happy with how it turned out. Madison would like me to help her with the kitchen next!
@@CanterburyCottage that's exciting, hopefully you can take us through the process!! You're fortunate to have such wonderful "daughters".
Wow...instantly they look like Mature, Accomplished and Sophisticated Adults! 🎉 I Absolutely ❤ the Club Chairs!
Great job Sherry and Madison! Considering you have a maximalist style Sherry, you did well keeping it more open for the kids (which is likely more preferable) They are lucky to have a talented mom and "mil" to help them out😊 OH! And another reason to never throw anything out!
Thank you so much! Madison likes vintage things and likes to thrift shop, so we’ll see if she becomes a maximalist over time! 😉
I'm so glad your son moved out of his brother's basement so we got to see you do this again! I love the room. I have to try to create a couple of rooms in my home over the next few months with an almost zero budget so I was just thrilled to see you put this together so beautifully. Now I'm super inspired. Thank you! 🙂
Beautiful! They are so lucky to have you. I love their home, especially the gallery wall. 😍
Thank you so much, Vicki!
This is right out of "Better Homes & Gardens"! I love it all!
What a beautiful room! Fantastic job! I love the hounds tooth chairs.
Thank you so much!
Looks just like a room where I'd like to cuddle up with a book and enjoy a cup of tea. Beautiful !
BEAUTIFUL! Looks like they have lived there for years and collected items over time.
Sherry, i have said it before and I will say it again. You are truly amazing and your taste in home decoration is impeccable. I only wish I owned a house that you could decorate! Love your videos! You never disappoint.
I can't wait to see your makeovers
As usual you never disappoint Sherry! You have done wonderful projects for your boys and their significant others!!
Unbelievable! I can't even fathom the ability to do that.
This room is so cozy! My favorites were the herringbone chairs. And I’m so envious of your thrift store finds!
Thank you so much! I do feel lucky to have several good thrift stores near me!
Draping over the chair backs and even the lower front are my favorite easy the ngs to change for seasons. It is such a lovely shade for the sofa and chairs. Wonderful way to teach your children how to do things in a pinch. Your total expense was less than $500!😊❤
This room looks very collected over time. It’s so pretty!
Incredibly fortunate to have you!
I love the gallery wall! This really looks like a grown-up room.
Everything turned out so good Sherry. Tthe room looks like it happened over time . I know they appreciate saving so much money
What a beautifully curated room. I had sooooo much fun watching you turn this room into a stylish comfortable place for your son and his lady.
I cannot believe you got all of the furniture in the room, I 'am loving this so,so much!!! Fantastic, wonderful, warm, inviting. You are a wonder. Oh my gosh I will never get tired of watching you do what you do so well. Again I'm watching it again! I always do anyway. You are a treasure. Bless you for all you do for your family. God Bless, Hugs to you my friend. Rebekah
Thank you so much, Rebekah! You are a true sweetheart! I really appreciate your kind words!
Enjoyed how you put such a beautful room together on a budget. All your thrift store finds and use of colour really brought the room together for a lovely living space. Bravo!❤
Thanks so much, Carol! 😊
Sherry, I can't even believe how beautiful this turned out with spending such little money!
Thank you! Madison is not afraid of doing a little work and she loves to go thrift shopping, too. I’m so happy to have a new shopping partner!
You truly have a tremendous styling ability!!
Dang, that was satisfying!!! What a gift you have for making empty spaces into cozy, charming abodes!!!
Your room makeovers are always full of creativity and come together so well. This one didn't disappoint.
It's simply beautiful and cozy for a young couple.
Thank you, Sooner Gal!
What a comfy and charming space! It looks like it had taken quite a while to curate this room, instead of a fairly quick project. Awesome job! ❤
