The Sigma being properly weather sealed is a great feature over the Sony 85 1.8. I live in a very rainy location and low-key regret the Sony 1.8 because of the lack of weather sealing. It has stayed at home more often than I'd have liked because of rain. Going forward, I'll only be buying weather sealed lenses.
I have the Sigma 90 with one of Sony a7Cs and it’s a great package when you want a medium tele but also want a light and compact kit. Thanks for doing this video
The 90mm and 40mm lenses sound like the beginning of a great three-lens setup for a full-frame digital camera. What 20 or 21mm lenses are available for the third lens?
Samyang 18mm 2.8, Viltrox 20mm 2.8, both small.. Possibly apsc alternatives Sony 11mm, 15mm or Samyang 12mm f2. I also think that Tamron 35-150 and either of those lenses is great for weddings and similar. Possibly even with a second small apsc body you can buy for cheap and have apsc lens permanently ready - i think i would take Sony 11mm 1.8 in that case.
Nice, but compare with Batis 85mm ( kinda old, but I used to love all batis 25, 40, and Zeiss 55mm) with Stabilization, what will you suggest for mainly video purpose these days in 2024? Jason !
Found a mint used copy as well but really need to try it out more. It’s having a hard time displacing my Zeiss Batis 85/1.8 with image stabilization in my travel bag that houses my A7RC and A7CII. Often pair my 85/1.8 with the Batis 40/2.0 CF. Also moving over to the 24-50/2.8 G which would pair ideally with the 90/2.8. Thank you and take care.
@@lukazupie7220 From a bag weight point of view yes the single 24-70/2.8 zoom is less to carry but two lenses give me flexibility. Having the smaller zoom allows me to pick the prime opportunistically based on where I’m going and what I’m shooting. So it’s not about owning the smallest kit for me. Also the smaller lenses feel better to me when actually shooting.
Honestly it being at f2.8 at this focal length has helped with outdoor photography - now I can actually tell what was in the environment instead of having a creamy blurry painting. I’ve had clients ask me if their portraits were taken on a Zeiss or voigtlander due to the cats eye bokeh swirl, and at f2.8 it’s not RAZOR sharp, but a more pleasing looking sharpness for skin texture. At f4 and f5.6 you get the whole corner-to-corner sharpness most TH-camrs are fixated with these days, which would be perfect for studio portraits.
There is a Samyang 75mm 1.8 what its super compact (like this sigma) and very very good in my opinion. With an F1.8 it makes it perfect for travel portraits and it pairs awesome with the a7c cameras and apsc line and its also very low weight. You should try it!
My friend in Korea has that one but sadly the AF was a hit or miss in trickier lighting condition. Otherwise it’s great! Did that ever happen to you? He ended up also picking up this 90mm as well!

Oh those Sony G trios are amazing! I need Sony to make more! I have the 24mm F2.8 and love it a lot! 40G I would often borrow & 50G I always considered for the faster & better AF but since the ZEISS 55mm F/1.8 isn't that much bigger and heavier, I still go for it over the 50G. Would you be able to try the sigma 17mm f4 and sigma 24mm f3.5? I’m trying to find a super sharp and compact landscape lens to pair with the a7cr and I’m coming up short
I featured the Sigma 17mm awhile back. For the most part, it's also pretty sharp. But the vignetting and distortion can get pretty noticeable. That's the compromise for being so tiny. Sigma 24mm F3.5 isn't worth it imo since Sony has a 2.8 version and it's way lighter.
The Sigma 65mm f2 is supposed to be super sharp. I know a lot of people use ultrawide lenses for landscapes, but I use everything from 16-200+mm (but mostly between 24-105mm). Doesn't Sigma offer some wide compact Contemporary lenses to, with f2; like 20 and/or 20mm? Been thinking about that 17mm f4 myself. Landscapes are often captured at f5.6 - f8 and up anyway. Samyang also has a lot of compact and fast primes.
A7c is my main camera atm, funny to see it celebrated for once lol. I think it's great, grab a couple of the rokinon f2.8 series of lenses or the Tamron 35-150mm and your good with a all around powerhouse. But God damn does the viewfinder suck.
Hey Jason thank you! Your videos are awasome! Please came to Brazil to make some videos here! I'm now using ZVE1 and sony 28 2.0, 40 2.5 and sigma 90 2.8. Amazing lenses. How nice. They are so fine, soon I will buy a second body, another ZVE1 for sure!
If you're familiar with Mark Galer's channel, he's all over the a7c and compact primes. I love the Sony Compact G series! And the Sigma i-series are awesome, as you've described. Plus, the i-series go wider and longer than the current Compact G offerings. The Sigma 17mm f4 is bomb as is this 90mm f2.8. According to Mark's math, a *compact* 135mm f2.8 probably isn't possible, but a 135mm f4 is. At that focal length, and compact for backpacking, I'd be fine with f4. For sure, if Sigma or Sony releases one, I'm in line! Thanks & stay awesome, Jason!
I don't mind a 135mm F4! I may not know all the physics that go behind making lenses but if it's a compromise that has to be made, I'd be ok with that (my back will appreciate it!) & Mark's awesome!
Took this lens out for a trip to Puerto Rico and it was amazing. I was able to fit a sony a7cii, sigma 24mm f2 contemporary, sony 35mm f1.8, and sigma 90mm f2.8 contemporary in a 6L sling and didn't notice the weight at all!!! amazing for a travel setup! if I can find one at around $400 I'm buying it!!
I traded my 85mm for this and I never looked back, sure the low light lower iso is a miss but for 90% of the time I use flash at night or use daylight for people portraits.
@@MotivationNConsistency For casual & travel, I'd go with the 90mm. For work related stuff, 85mm 1.8 but even then, I can probably get away with the tinier 90mm. 🥹
I think that Lens makers are a bit afraid to make more expensive Lenses, but if there came a 90mm 2.8 with very high optical image performance that can perform without the need of software, I will pay more for such a Lens !
Cannot believe the level of ‘uncorrected’ distortion. None of my Canon primes have that. Even my 1990 80-200 mm F2.8 L outperforms that …but it does weigh a ton. When film was king, the best lenses from Canon, Nikon, Leica and MF Fuji were beautifully made but very expensive at today’s prices. Just stuck my old 50mm F 1.8 Canon EF from 1990 on my EOS M5 using the mount converter to check with no digital correction. Brilliant and no distortion. That’s 80mm equivalent. Even with my old (expensive) sigma APO 1.4 tele converter very little distortion….. As for my mid 1990s Bronica MF primes…absolutely fantastic….and all metal including a leaf shutter. Maybe things don’t always get better with newer models….
@@JasonVong I have the Samyang 75 and it’s a thing of beauty on the a6400… I am very tempted. I’m wondering if they could do something brighter at similar size for cropped sensor. Had a bit of an experience yesterday taking photos with a7s/tamron 70-180 and my wrists do not like me me… and I’m thinking about primes and aps-c in future (although if sigma could do a sensible sized tiny 70-200 equivalent to the 18-50 that would also be nice)
The Sigma 90mm, f2.8, dg dn doesn’t compare favorably on macro to the Sony, 90mm, f2.8. The Sony 90mm does have it’s merits, (other worldly macro, really sharp and contrasty, no distortion whatsoever!, lens stabilization-ois). These are attractive features that made me buy it. Still, it’s not perfect. There is nothing compact about it, it’s long and heavy, it is not a fast autofocusing lens, it’s expensive (~$1000+ new), and it’s almost 10years old. I returned mine as it was too slow to focus, too big and heavy, and I hated the idea that I spent so much on it and didn’t want to shoot with it. Still, If you need macro, you’re probably not going to find anything better in the full frame world than the Sony, 90mm, f2.8. It is remarkable at this. The Sigma 90 wins on size and portability, cost, value, is equally as sharp with some manageable pin cushion distortion, (but completely goes away without destroying the image with in camera lens corrections), and if you shoot video has no focus breathing whatsoever ever. I am so much happier with it and it has become my favorite lens.
I have the 85 1.8 but would still like to have the sigma 90 for my A7C. It’s half the size of the 85. So when I want small and compact. This could be an option.
Ahhhhh, you got me excited until you said f2.8 🤦♂️ - and before anyone says you don’t need f1.8 or f1.4, you because less messing around with ND filters during the day can just leave the Polar Pro 6-9 on, and don’t need as much lighting gear to film interiors - would love a compact APSC 90mm f1.4 from Sigma.
I do not like Lenses that cannot perform with optical quality image quality without to be dependent of software like the Sigma 90mm 2.8, I like small compact Lenses and I hope we will see more high end compact Lenses that can perform without the need of software ! I also hope that SONY will make an upgraded SONY A7CR II with larger and higher resolution EVF and a very good joystick, SONY also need to make a "A7000" APSC Camera with their 40 megapixels sensor.
with the sound of this you're asking for G Master level of quality already .. you might want to consider that instead .. in reality, any lens will have some form of compromise, especially if you want something that is compact. you just cannot fit a lot of correcting elements in a size that is compact yet sturdy. even g master lenses have some optical corrections required if you really want a perfect-quality image, that is considering they already have lots of elements to correct various distortions asking for lenses to have zero distortion is asking physics to break the laws of electromagnetism. its quite impossible. we can get close to having minimal corrections (such as those in g master / rf-l and other premium lenses) but asking corrections to be eliminated entirely is quite impossible.
@@trevourlance27 No, I have Sony GM Lenses, I want more COMPACT high end Lenses just as good or better than Sony GM Lenses ! My other Lenses are Zeiss and Voigtländer.
I don''t consider that mini. You need to use an pancake lens. The setup you have here I achieved over 5 years ago with an A6600 & sigma 56mm f/1.4. Yes, it's not full-frame, but the image it produces will be almost identical to the setup in this video.

Slap this 90 on and it's a 135mm for APSC! 😂
How's the auto focus on that thing?

Wondering how the lens performs as a macro compared to Sony's F2.8 90 mm macro
@@Cthames123 Thnk you . That was above and beyond 🙏
2 bodies for travel that is a new one😁
yongnuo 85mm 1.8 is the one I have in the cross hair
I haven't heard about YongNuo in ages! Since the good ol' days where their speedlights is the best budget option. Good times
I just use my Sigma 56mm f1.4 on my a6700. Other than that I shoot film with my Nikon F3 and a 50mm lens.
Seems like you wanna go with Fuji
I'll stay with my 85mm f1.8
Same
I have the 85 1.8 but would still like to have the sigma 90 for my A7C. It’s half the size of the 85. So when I want small and compact. This could be an option.
Wow thanks for letting us know, not sure how I could get through the week without knowing 🤷♂️🙄
The SONY ZEISS Sonnar 35mm 2.8 T* ZA are smaller and more light weight than the SONY 40mm 2.5 G.
When is the next oblivion dust video?
its has been a while for a video from you, where is your 3rd series of Cherry Blossom video in Japan?
It's not just you. Magnetic lens caps!!
I've owned this setup and it's a pain to get the lens cap off when the hood is inside. Great lens nonetheless.
You are good photographer

Smartphones are catching up with cameras that use low end lens. High quality lenses are always more important than any camera or smartphone
Is that a Sigma 90mm in your packet, or are you just happy to see me?
You will get better image quality if you use APS-C camera and Sigma 56mm f1.4. It's also cheaper
Now, the price went up again on market.
I click because of that blue anchor.
Small but so long, just like J Vong
Ahhhhh, you got me excited until you said f2.8 🤦♂️ - and before anyone says you don’t need f1.8 or f1.4, you because less messing around with ND filters during the day can just leave the Polar Pro 6-9 on, and don’t need as much lighting gear to film interiors - would love a compact APSC 90mm f1.4 from Sigma.
Hahahah I felt this same 😂
Tempting for lighter backpack...
I do not like Lenses that cannot perform with optical quality image quality without to be dependent of software like the Sigma 90mm 2.8, I like small compact Lenses and I hope we will see more high end compact Lenses that can perform without the need of software ! I also hope that SONY will make an upgraded SONY A7CR II with larger and higher resolution EVF and a very good joystick, SONY also need to make a "A7000" APSC Camera with their 40 megapixels sensor.
with the sound of this you're asking for G Master level of quality already .. you might want to consider that instead ..
in reality, any lens will have some form of compromise, especially if you want something that is compact. you just cannot fit a lot of correcting elements in a size that is compact yet sturdy.
even g master lenses have some optical corrections required if you really want a perfect-quality image, that is considering they already have lots of elements to correct various distortions
asking for lenses to have zero distortion is asking physics to break the laws of electromagnetism. its quite impossible.
we can get close to having minimal corrections (such as those in g master / rf-l and other premium lenses) but asking corrections to be eliminated entirely is quite impossible.
@@trevourlance27 No, I have Sony GM Lenses, I want more COMPACT high end Lenses just as good or better than Sony GM Lenses ! My other Lenses are Zeiss and Voigtländer.
Are you putting it on a film camera. Nope. Such silly rules you have
@@ChrisM-yq2pq No ! I just do not like products that are cheap made !!!
Saying this is so Vong...
but feels so right
51 seconds🎉😂
I don''t consider that mini. You need to use an pancake lens. The setup you have here I achieved over 5 years ago with an A6600 & sigma 56mm f/1.4. Yes, it's not full-frame, but the image it produces will be almost identical to the setup in this video.
Jason, wanna test the new 7artisans 85mm f1.8? its just 330€ :o
ttartisan 75 F2 🔥
Am i dreaming?
never seen something this short have so much reach 👀
Im sure Sigma asked you to make a review for their poorest performing lens.
Youngnou 85 1.8 передает привет.
Samyang 75mg f/1.8 230g $350
Small and long, sounds like a bad problem.
ok dan lok
