So it's SUPER easy to pack out knowing there's no prep for the lenses. I know what fits in my bag every single time and no longer have to play the "this one or that one" game!
Most versatile and complete range. But nothing really Art oriented without any fast prime lens. You have to work harder to have cinematic beauty shots. That's the downside.
@@heretikpapy f/2.8 is plenty fast for the work I do and style I prefer! Definitely not hating on faster glass as it very well has a place in photo and video. My third most used lens is a 14-24 F2.8, but I use it far less than the other two.
Wait I understand that you’re gaining 200 extra mm but you’re not gonna get as much light nor the creamy bokeh and is it really worth that? I mean I’m really torn between the variable aperature lens vs a low f stop zoom lens. Having used both can you give me a quick review please?

Hi Jason, great video and alternative suggestions. I own the Tamron 17-28. While it is not the best, it gets the job done. I do not own the Sigma 85 but borrowed it to test for a month or so. The Sigma is perhaps the sharpest lens I have shot wide open. Another thing I like about the Sigma 85 was how light it felt on the camera. If I had the budget, I would go all GM lenses. But for budget reasons, I went with an all Tamron line up and totally happy with the results I am getting. I had a chance to shoot the Tamron 17-50 for a few days and it is a fantastic versatile lens. The only "downside" is that it is an f4!
Ummm, I own the sigma 85 1.4 art lens. I totally agree, it’s incredibly sharp, and love it. But light? No it’s not. The Sony zeiss 1.8 is light, and has beautiful color rendition, and is sharp too. Chromatic aberration is present though. And is a bulky lens. I obviously love this focal length though. I’ve wondered about this Sony 85 for travel.
I have two lenses. Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 and a Sony 20mm f/1.8 because I mostly shoot landscape photos (and yes, sometimes you need 200 for landscapes) and my a7 IV can do APS-C 4K in video so the 20mm can become narrower need be. I’ve tried a 14-24mm Sigma but it was too wide for me. I don’t shoot portraits… almost ever. So I don’t need a 50 or 85 prime.
Currently for my a7c I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 which I use 90% of the time and love. But for the wide end, I recently picked up the Viltrox 16 1.8, which is super fun to use and has excellent quality for the price!
I have an a7c, and I'm feeling like crap about my lens choices this far. I have a Sony 50mm 1.8, Samyang 24mm 2.8, Sony 30mm Macro 3.5 (it's a crop tho), and Sony 16-35mm f4 PZ G
Now I feel better about having my 3 main lenses - Sigma 16-28mm, Sony 35GM and my 85mm 1.8.... I do have my 135GM and Tamron 70-180mm for longer shots, but the shorter ones are what I carry day to day and love using on my A7R3. Need to experiment with the super35 mode.
Interesting. I already decided to go this route before you posted this video. And I have to agree , this is the way to go.I can't afford a f2.8 on the zoom though. May go with the cheaper f4pz instead.
Atm im rocking the Tamron 35-150 which I really love specially when traveling, Yes its a little heavy but I've done 10h hike in Iceland without a problem :) I do intend to get the 16-35 GM to complement the kit. Also bought the Samyang 50mm FEII on a fluke and its really nice.
I agree with you that the wide-angle zooms are the most versatile and easiest to shoot. However, if I can only get 2 lenses I'd rather pick the 100mm f/2.8 Macro or anything similar than the fast 85mm because I can also get a macro lens on top of portrait lens in the same lens.
I just started really getting into photography, I purchased the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm 1.8 from Sony. Do you think those were good selections? I do mostly street, portrait and nature photography
I heard that that people complain about 50mm, but 85 is brilliant and I am in the process of persuading myself that I do not need 35mm 1.8 so overall decent setup. Any specific reason why primes only instead zoom?
@@KsaweryKarwacki I like the quality of pictures I get from prime lenses. I have the kit zoom lens and it turned me off. I have the Sony Alpha 7IV, the zoom was 28-70MM 3.5 -5.6. The picture quality was not great, I also don't have the funds to purchase those expensive nice zoom lenses
24-70 2.8 + 70-200 2.8 will cover most of anyone's needs. Throw in a fast and light 14 to 16mm prime and you're good to go at anything except birds and bugs. Or if you really want the 16-35 instead, just pair that with a 50mm prime and the 70-200mm 2.8. APS-C mode is meh even with the A7 IV so I wouldn't count on that to get to 50mm with the 16-35. If you're not shooting indoors without flash or you don't really need the BOK-EH, grab f/4 versions of those zooms and save a ton in both cash and weight.
Yeppp... After I have traveled to a lot of countries and tried at least 10 different lenses with my hybrid camera (Sony A7IV) I would say the 24-70 is just not it, kind of overrated, its good if you can bring only 1 lens (I own a Sigma 24-70), but I barely use it... if you can do 2 or maybe 3. I would say my go to is 16-35 f2.8 GM and Tamron 70-180 f2.8 so I cover a lot from wide to telephoto range. I also bring a prime, the 35 f1.4 GM for casual walk around or low light scenarios. If I know that I need an Astro lens I replace the 35 with the 20 f1.8 G, but the lighter is your backpack the better overall experience is.
😂 I’m the complete opposite Zoom is 24-70mm f2.8 Prime is 35mm f1.4 70mm at f2.8 has plenty of separation; and wide lenses need a wider aperture for same result, hence the f1.4 and for a low light lens, I’d prefer a 35mm 1.4 over an 85mm 1.4
13mm and 24mm primes on ASPC. Wide, fast and light. Great if you don’t mind cropping into your 24mp image from time to time. Mild tele is tempting however…
A minimalist approach.... I can see that. What's the point of having lenses... that we hardly ever use? Thanks. Being just a hobbyist... I started idealizing zoom lenses at first.... Then I noticed that most of them were so slow... f/4, f/5... and unusable in low-light situations, they tended to collect dust inside, and most delivered softer IQ pics than primes. So for now, my ideal Trinity of lenses is a 28mm prime- wide, a 50mm prime- normal view and a 85mm prime- kind of telescopic... all at f/1.8. Rarely do I need to shoot specifically a 53mm, 37mm, or a 74mm shot... You get the point. - If I get into weddings, may have to invest in a macro lens... and a remote possibility would be the 200-400mm or a 70-200mm long zoom lens... We'll see.
if i had to choose only 2 lenses to use it would be that 16 - 35mm f2.8 and 70 - 200mm f2.8 i love my 70 - 200 and use it a lot and i also have that 85mm f1.8 but find myself using the 70 - 200mm way more. and when i use my 35mm prime often feel like needing wider lens. and ive actually been thinking about buying that 16 - 35mm f2.8 GM II
@@s1dew1nd3r4 i actually use it quite often, while it does affect the image quality a bit, its not really that much. pretty much every time when i need that extra bit of reach and getting closer isnt an option, ill happily use it.
On a recent trip to Thailand I had the a7cII with 12-24 f2.8 and the 24-70 f28. As well as the RX100vii. I ended up only using the RX100 and the 12-24. The former was when I wasn't really going out to shoot something specific and the a7cII when I was specifically going to shoot stuff.
For me, it would be zoom lenses. The Sony GM 24-70mm F/2.8 and GM 70-200mm F/2.8. As much as i love my 85mm and 135mm Portrait lenses, they are just good for portraits. With my zoom lenses, i can shoot any environment even if the bokeh is plain haha.
@@ramenkingfilms8537 That's a great set. You'll love the 70-200 GM-ii as it comes in handy a lot. Im hoping to add the GM 12-24mm to my collection in the future.
Really cool video - had never thought about the lenses like you pointed out with turning the camera body into APSC mode it gives the lens a dual focal length, cracking! Iv never shot Sony before, iv had fujifilm XT1, Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera, Canon 7d and a Canon M5 - im currently inbetween systems and weighing up what to go with, im thinking of giving Sony a try, the 7d with a 70-200 was so fricken heavy compared to the others whilst the M5 was so fiddly and small for my hands, Fujifilm at the time lacked a choice of lenses with next to no third party options - considered MFT too but im not sure about the quality of MFT images there appears to be some strange sort of noise throughout most of the images iv seen. If you are using a 24mp in APSC mode though and only getting 10mp, surely that is going to be a hinderance to your picture quality?
I'm planning to buy a sony camera this summer. If I I buy an a6700, I'll go with tamron 50-400mm and zeiss 55mm. But If I buy a full frame, let's say a7iv or used a9ii, I'll go with the same tamron lens but with zeiss 85mm
My two lenses of choice: The Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN and the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM. By adding a Sony 20mm 1.8 G it would be complete and good compromise between weight, speed and performance.
Mine favourite two are the 1.4f Samyang 85mm and 35mm. I leave the small Tamron zoom, and sigma 17-24mm at home. I still need a 20mm 1.4f though… once I went fast prime, can‘t go back.
Ey yo Vong, can you make a Quickie Wiki comparison of 10-18mm apsc vs 16-35 FF comparison please? Don’t care about the image quality but want to know about the distortion. A 10mm crop is equal to 15mm FF field of view but is still a 10mm cropped and not a true 15mm FF. the reason why I ask is because of the sigma 10-18 2.8 solution I bought for my a7iv wide angle 4k60. The thing weighs like a feather so I’m packing that with my 24-70 2.8 and 85 1.4 sigmas.
If I had only ONE lens it would be a super zoom. Far easier and far more versatile than two of anything. Oh, yes, I've been doing that for 40 years! Currently Canon 24-240! Very underrated lens with lens corrections done by the camera for jpeg! Funnily I won a lot of photo prizes using just ONE lens. The 55mm which came with my Ricoh Singlex 35mm film camera!
Most places I just use the 24-70mm f2.8 GM(mki and now mkii). I just pair it with the 15mm F2.0 laowa. For my trip to japan and Philippines I may just get the sony 20-70mm F4. Single lenses travel. If I feel a prime portrait lenses is needed then the 55mm F1.8 as that small.
I carry the FE 24-240mm or 36-360mm in APSC mode and the very old APS-C E 10-18mm (15-27mm) that in full frame is 12-18mm (18mm if you remove the light shield) f/4 OSS Soooo small and with treads for filters or stick with any one of the Sony 16-35mm.
If you're on a really tight budget, the new Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 AF is available for Sony FE (full-frame E-mount), and it's only $158.00! Image quality is good, and the value is amazing. Another budget pick for the long end, is the Samyang 75mm f/1.8. It's under $300.00.
i'm buying a sony zv-e10, i'm a dj and i'd like to take videos mainly from the public's point of view to record my music drops. which lens would you recommend?
It’s the build quality and image quality! It has a constant aperture of 2.8 which will give you better bokeh when you start shooting more you will realise the auto focusing breathing in kit lenses is decent or just bad when compared to better quality lenses.
Awesome video thanks! Would you recommend the same 2 lens setup for an aps-c setup? If not, what would you you recommend? Any light gpu could provide would be greatly appreciated.
16-35 1.8 would be interesting too, but I would take 150-400 f4 (rumored) as the second. I have 35-150 tho so I'm already going for 3 with 12-24 and tele in that instead.
@AlpControl I agree on the 85 mm. I personnaly use 3 prime lenses For landscape : A wide angle needs to be sharp, no flare, nice sunstar, no subject separation needed. Tamron 24 mm F/2.8 is the perfect budget lens. Sony 20 mm F/1.8 G or 14 mm F/1.4 GM is needed only if focus on astrophotography (wider aperture) or architecture (wider angle and less distorsion). For portrait : A king's bokeh is needed for professionnal looking photos. Samyang 85 mm F/1.4 AF version 1 aspherical is amazing, very close to the Sony GM for a third of the price. For general purpose each time I take only one litle lens with me : Samyang 45 mm F/1.8 is incredibly light and versatile, even closer to human eye focal than a 50 mm, great bokeh.

What about sony 24-70 gm ii If you could only use one?
I switched to Sony this year and that’s the route I took 16-35 but F4 Sony and 85 1.4 sigma (from KEH,lol)
do you find in apsc mode it reduces the image quality quite a lot?
I primarily do travel and landscapes. My main lenses are the 24-70 GM II and the 70-200 GM II. Those two lenses cover 90% of what I shoot.
Currently for my a7c I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 which I use 90% of the time and love. But for the wide end, I recently picked up the Viltrox 16 1.8, which is super fun to use and has excellent quality for the price!
viltrox is amazing
This sounds like the kind of setup I’m looking for, you’d recommend?
@@adventuresofaarontaylor Absolutely, the only thing "missing" is a telephoto. I mainly shoot photo, and my setup is plenty for my current needs
I have an a7c, and I'm feeling like crap about my lens choices this far. I have a Sony 50mm 1.8, Samyang 24mm 2.8, Sony 30mm Macro 3.5 (it's a crop tho), and Sony 16-35mm f4 PZ G
What about the Sony 24-70mm GM II
best of the best for video for sure no question he is tripping lol
Now I feel better about having my 3 main lenses - Sigma 16-28mm, Sony 35GM and my 85mm 1.8.... I do have my 135GM and Tamron 70-180mm for longer shots, but the shorter ones are what I carry day to day and love using on my A7R3. Need to experiment with the super35 mode.
I picked up the Tamron 20-40mm 2.8 recently and have not been disappointed.
Hi Jason, nice review. Besides the natural light, what key-light & modifier did you use to shoot your talking head video? Looks great
I use the 12-24 and 85 1.4, as a 2 lens setup (no gimbal use though)
Sony G 50 2.5 y Sony 85 1.8
If I know that I need an Astro lens I replace the 35 with the 20 f1.8 G, but the lighter is your backpack the better overall experience is.
do you notice much of an image quality drop if you shoot in super35 mode?
Great video. Just fyi brother Penultimate means “next to last.” I had the issue with one of my videos a few months ago.
Nice! These are the lenses that I have coming in the mail soon (along with the 50mm sony 1.8)
Just got the version 1 16-35mm for $1K and I absolutely love the lens! I agree with this video. I can do 99% of what I do with that combo alone
Had it for some months. It's too heavy and bulky. Apart from the qualities of this lens , I don't like that it is flare prone.
😂 I’m the complete opposite
Zoom is 24-70mm f2.8
Prime is 35mm f1.4
70mm at f2.8 has plenty of separation; and wide lenses need a wider aperture for same result, hence the f1.4 and for a low light lens, I’d prefer a 35mm 1.4 over an 85mm 1.4
Been looking for lenses to pair with 85mm. Can’t afford the GM, PZ 16-35f/4 for me.
13mm and 24mm primes on ASPC. Wide, fast and light. Great if you don’t mind cropping into your 24mp image from time to time. Mild tele is tempting however…
16-35 GM was my first choice of lens and it is fantastic!
I ate a month worth of noodles for this lens....lol jk
I ate a month worth of noodles for this lens....lol...jk
Always good to see new videos. 👍🏻
We'll see.
Another Jason video? Let's go buddy
Thanks so much about the input Jason!
if i had to choose only 2 lenses to use it would be that 16 - 35mm f2.8 and 70 - 200mm f2.8
i love my 70 - 200 and use it a lot and i also have that 85mm f1.8 but find myself using the 70 - 200mm way more.
and when i use my 35mm prime often feel like needing wider lens. and ive actually been thinking about buying that 16 - 35mm f2.8 GM II
do you use it on super35 mode much? if so have you found it reduces the image quality a lot?
@@s1dew1nd3r4 i actually use it quite often, while it does affect the image quality a bit, its not really that much.
pretty much every time when i need that extra bit of reach and getting closer isnt an option, ill happily use it.
The work ethic is crazy
On a recent trip to Thailand I had the a7cII with 12-24 f2.8 and the 24-70 f28. As well as the RX100vii. I ended up only using the RX100 and the 12-24. The former was when I wasn't really going out to shoot something specific and the a7cII when I was specifically going to shoot stuff.
For me Sony 20mm G lens as my next purchase. No doubt Sony 16-35mm a more sensible option but for sharpness prefer prime lens. Plus cost gap?
My standard lens Voigtlander 35mm f2 on my Sony A7RIII
Awesome video - what do you use at 00:24 as the yellow/orange background on your table? Is it card?
i woulda said 35+85 bc of the 1.4/1.8 bokeh but that would be like a wedding kit, i can see why the 16-35 would make it much more versatile
20-70/f4 and 35mm GM are the dynamic duo for me
i use 24 and 135...great recommendations.
I have the Sony 24-70mm F/2.8 GM II, Sony 14mm F/1.8 GM, and the Sony 24-105mm F/4. Hoping to get the GM 70-200mm when I have the funds for it.
@@ramenkingfilms8537 That's a great set. You'll love the 70-200 GM-ii as it comes in handy a lot. Im hoping to add the GM 12-24mm to my collection in the future.
my 2 would be the 16-35 GM and the tamron 35 -150mm
No overlap and full coverage :D
Agree. I second that.
I use only 2 lenses [with my sony a7c] 1: sigma 24-70 2.8, 2: sony 90 mm 2.8
Hi there, thanks for all great contents, what gimbal are you using for this camera? Or what gimbal would you recommend? Thanks 🙏
Great video! The Sigma 85mm 1.4ƒ DG DN Art and the Sigma 16-28mm 2.8ƒ DG DN C are my go to’s for everyday carry!
Mine favourite two are the 1.4f Samyang 85mm and 35mm. I leave the small Tamron zoom, and sigma 17-24mm at home. I still need a 20mm 1.4f though… once I went fast prime, can‘t go back.
what can you say about the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 for apsc? nice video as always!
Why would you want to use ‘super 35’ (APSC cropped) when you have clear image zoom anyway?
U can’t use ICZ with raw shots. Only with jpg.
16-35 and 24-70 GMII is great for doc work.
i'm buying a sony zv-e10, i'm a dj and i'd like to take videos mainly from the public's point of view to record my music drops. which lens would you recommend?
For the zoom lens, when it goes from 16 to 35, does the 35 look less distorted on people's faces? Like at 35, is it identical to a 35 prime?
Why would it look any different? Look up how a optical zoom lens works :)
I literally sold all my lenses and kept only these two and a digital wide angle for real estate. Best decision ever
Which of the two in your opinion is the better option for wild life?
Noob question: what would be the difference between the Sony 16-35mm you recommend, and the Sony 16-50mm kit lens?
It’s the build quality and image quality! It has a constant aperture of 2.8 which will give you better bokeh when you start shooting more you will realise the auto focusing breathing in kit lenses is decent or just bad when compared to better quality lenses.
Awesome video thanks! Would you recommend the same 2 lens setup for an aps-c setup? If not, what would you you recommend? Any light gpu could provide would be greatly appreciated.
16-35 1.8 would be interesting too,
but I would take 150-400 f4 (rumored) as the second.
I have 35-150 tho so I'm already going for 3 with 12-24 and tele in that instead.
how about 20--40 f 2.8 with Samyang 75 mm f1.8 for ZVE1
Use highest MP camera, use GM, and crop however you want.
The Sony 16-35 F4 PZ is a great price wise option!
This pair is always my to go lenses too but with 16-35 GM i
@AlpControl
I agree on the 85 mm.
I personnaly use 3 prime lenses
For landscape :
A wide angle needs to be sharp, no flare, nice sunstar, no subject separation needed.
Tamron 24 mm F/2.8 is the perfect budget lens.
Sony 20 mm F/1.8 G or 14 mm F/1.4 GM is needed only if focus on astrophotography (wider aperture) or architecture (wider angle and less distorsion).
For portrait :
A king's bokeh is needed for professionnal looking photos.
Samyang 85 mm F/1.4 AF version 1 aspherical is amazing, very close to the Sony GM for a third of the price.
For general purpose each time I take only one litle lens with me :
Samyang 45 mm F/1.8 is incredibly light and versatile, even closer to human eye focal than a 50 mm, great bokeh.
If I have my FF set to APS-C is it the same as cropping or am I missing something? Thanks for another great video Jason!
Hi Jason
I'm new to the world of photography, looking to buy my first professional camera, really like the a6700 or the fx30, I'm planning to do more photography than video, but i do want a camera to do both.
What camera do you think I should go for?
Thanks
I only use 2 lens for my street photos. 24-70 F4 & 50mm f1.8.
Curios why 16-35 and not 24-70? Do you find having that 16mm is super necessary over 24mm for travel photography?
I have a Tokina 85mm F1.8 that I bought here in China for 230€ and a Sony 40mm 2.5 G that I bought in Portugal for 120€.
If I get a wide angle zoom lens & use the crop mode too - fors it then still make sense that I get the 28-75mm from Tamron - or does the wide angle zoom lens do that you? - And then i can invest in a telephoto instead? Its for Sony a7cii and for videos
what do you recommend for fitness videos and occasional food video/pics
My 85mm 1.8 has paid for itself multiple times as my headshot workhorse.
Omg so depends the camera lost que quality? 😮 for Sony A7ii ? Work? Or for Sony A is better?
Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 and the Tamron 150-500 f5-6.7 its all i will ever need for what i do
Hello! I am entirely new to photography but have already found my niche in street photography and have come across the 85mm being recommended. I have a very basic apsc camera. Should I still be getting 85mm lens or a 56mm equivalent? I am not sure how that all works.
Jason: Penultimate means second to the first.
Could you please recommend for A6400?
16-35 gm ii and Tamron 35-150
Tell me a lens which can focus at around 20cm (APS-C or FullFrame). Thanks!
