  • Elsewhere on this channel we've featured juvenile justice documentaries that feature kids who spend time in the juvenile justice system for many different reason. In this follow-up documentary, we revisit some of their stories and then take a look at how things were going 7 years later. Filmed between 2000-2007, this documentary illuminates how kids and families make their way through the juvenile justice system and exactly what's involved at every turn.
2022 UPDATE: Joshua is now doing well and has a full time job and a young son. His mom and stepdad have divorced.
DeLena finished her college degree and works full time as an office manager. She has 4 boys and has traveled the globe working with non-profit organizations. She and Gavin maintain a great relationship.
Raymond was never back in the criminal justice system. We have since lost contact with the family.
All contact has been lost with Chelsea.

What 18 year old can really manage without lots of help? I believe foster care should continue until age 21, it could be so different. Kids should be able to make mistakes without loosing their support network. Nobody is grown-at 18.

      ‘Nobody is grown at 18.’
      That depends on the kid.
Kids who can prove that they are able to provide for themselves can be legally emancipated as young as 16.

It's crazy that no one has put any thought into the amount of medications that poor girl has been put on could be the reason for her behavior. Makes me so sad.

I wouldnt live with a violent kid. Been there, done that. We put up with his violent crap til he was an adult. As a kid, had him in therapy. Gave him a good education, hes a college graduate. He never abandoned his violent ways. Disowned him when he turned 29. Its been 8 years, havent seen him since. I did tell him that if he shows up at my home, I will call police, have him arrested.
Good riddance to him. I no longer have to live with crazy, violent drama.

As a grandparent who finally got custody of my 13 yr. old grandson who was in foster care for three years (I had two strokes and had to recover before I could get him), foster care is no better for children. That one young lady is an exception to the case. My grandson was eight years old when I got him out and has told me horror stories of when he was in there. I've had him for five years now . In one home, they thought he was raped, another home was closed for abuse. They put those kids on pschycotropic drugs that messes up their young brains. I slowly weaned him off of Vivance (do research on this drug) and Abilify. Children are nothing but a comodity to CPS. DCS will not leave us alone. My grandson has good consequences and not so good consequences for his behavior. Thank you for your time and hope for the best for us.

Best of luck to you, and your grandson. I really understand what you mean when you talk about those destructive medicines. I recently found out, but always suspected it. The fact that 80 new diagnosis had been added to the DSM3, including the most ridiculous names for the disorders one can have, blows my mind. How they wrote down the symptoms, and just guessed their way through the process, a handful of pcychiatrists. People should be very careful of those medicines. It shrinks the frontal lobe. The kids becomes zombies.

Far too often the case and those adopted too. And if they speak out they are called liars and if a third party comes forward with evidence the child gets ( moved again sometimes to secure units off the back of lies to cover the inadequacies / abuse in care provided / failures of authorities) punished not the DeFacto parents / guardian's.

All these judges were incredible. I loved when Judge Payne told Ray that what happened to him was of no concern to him, he only cared about the children. He also decided that instead of complaining about the child welfare system he would jump ship and become a director and beacon of hope for the children. Judges Taliaferro and Bonaventura are empathetic, caring but by no means pushovers. They are a credit to the court system. As for the kids I worry about Chelsea being on her own at 18. She has never really made decisions for herself that impact her well being. Little Ray has some learning disabilities but also seems very anxious. He understands things beyond his years. Ray (the Father) seems like the kind of guy who won't do well outside a prison setting. Delena changed in some good and bad ways. She has another son, she's engaged and in college. That is awesome. However, she still seems to play the blame game. She says she is still Gavin's Mom but honestly, Kathy deserves that title. Delena will always be his biological Mother but Kathy is his Mom. She puts up with the big and little problems, the illnesses, the homework, the everyday dilemmas. Selena also said nobody cared about her before which is a lie. Kathy invited her and Gavin into her home with trust and love and made it their home, too. Delena stole and forged checks from Kathy and irrevocably betrayed that bond and trust but Kathy is still there for her and always has been. I wish all these people-the kids, fosters, families, social workers and judges the best.

Isn’t she?! And not just a fantastic judge…but beautiful inside and out. A lovely, compassionate judge yet stern without being cruel. When she says she’s disappointed in Connie for instance, it’s not to overuse shame as a method of torture but rather, as the learning tool that’s been evolutionarily wired within us. For just such purposes. Similar to pain. Not pleasant but necessary to us for our survival. She uses her place as a judge-her power so to speak-in the exact way she should in my opinion. I hear you, Amy! Kathy said she took them in because SHE wanted a family. The way I see things, she took the opportunity to legally steal Deleana's baby over $400! She SAID, "I'm afraid that Deleana will take Gavin, and then I'll never see him again - and I couldn't bear that". BUT HE'S NOT HER CHILD! She shouldn't be legally able to force Deleana to hand over her baby - over $400. I can't imagine how Gavin will feel when he figures out what his adopted mother did in order to get him. But he's going to grow up one day, Kathy! And despite all the brainwashing, he's going to work everything out for himself.

This Judge seems to be so fair and down to earth, thinking of what is best for the kids to help them become adults. I'm very shocked that there is no way to track the kids. Once they are adults, of course I realize they must be on their own, but until that time they should be able to be tracked across the country to prevent a family member from abducting them or harming them and their extended families.

Saving for her college and you want to be considered her mom… yes there should be punishment for stealing but criminal charges? You potentially ruin that girls life. Idk how y’all are saying she’s an angel. She’s barely that. A mom normally wouldn’t automatically seek out criminal charges for their daughter stealing $400. She has a kid, she’s had a hard life. If you want to help her how do you think putting her into the criminal system is helping? Potentially giving her a criminal record. Pretty ridiculous imo.

My heart broke for that little girl being left in that place by her mum never knowing if she would see her again because so many adults break their promises.
Whilst I do'nt doubt that for some children they find it hard to love
How can you give love when nobody's shown you what love is?
I love my children unconditionally, for a long while I did not love myself because I never felt worthy of love and being loved but it does'nt mean you cannot love.

Oh, I agree with you there. There are many other improvements to the system that should be undertaken also, rather than total intervention. For example, Chelsea was just a very wilful child - and I've no doubt that her mother struggled with her. But there are effective ways of dealing with extremely wilful children. With the system itself allowing parents to just dump them in a place like Daymar - which is essentially a juvenile delinquent institution - instead of teaching her mother better parenting skills and how to bring up her own daughter in ways that would nurture her desire to be 'a good girl' - would have been a far better solution. But do those services exist? When it was time for Chelsea to go home to her mother, she STILL wasn't wanted. Instead she went to a foster home - which didn't work out (it didn't say why), and she was returned to Daymar. How much rejection can that poor child take?! At least they were focused on teaching her independence - because she's going to be 100% on her own when the institution is done with her! She seems like a bright girl - and I hope to all heck that the system was willing to pay for her College education! They OWE HER that much at least. Without a higher education, I fail to see what kind of 'secure future' that young girl might have been able to make for herself when she did find herself all alone in the world - as I'm sure happened. Unfortunately her later story was not told in this documentary and no details are included in the description - so I can only hope that she has been able to stay very strong and go it alone successfully. The reality is more likely that she would suffer life-long fears of rejection and low self-esteem due to being unwanted. This usually leads to making bad partner choices later in life because they think they're not 'worthy' of a better one. Any 'love' is often considered to be better than no love to unwanted children who become adults. And if you're reading this, Chelsea - I do hope I'm VERY wrong about that, Sweetheart - Because you're worth a hundred of your mother and others who have ever let you down : )

Completely agree....mommy out chasing boys after dumping her previous husband. Step daddy isn't daddy at all, and you could tell by how he acted in the video he had nothing to do with Joshua except for whatever trouble he could get the kid into...he doesn't want to do anything to help Joshua, he's completely for getting him out of his way so he can have his way with mommy...surprised the sister hasn't been included in the shoving out of the house. Step dad acts as if Joshua is just in his way, and a burden to him, rather than stepping up and being the dad, he steps up to be a problem.
Sounds like mommy and step daddy want Joshua in the system so they don't have to deal with him rather than letting him go live with his dad...story stays 1 sided that way by ignoring Joshua's need for help, and not wanting to be around his mom and her useless boyfriend.
Josh knows what's going on, the system failed, as did his mother, and worthless step father.

I think she showed remorse and was surprisd that Kathy felt otherwise.. Sure it was a huge let down after her stellar record but we know that foster children can struggle after disrupted childhoods and messing up can be part of their journey. .I do understand the 5 day punishment in secure lockup...it was the right thing as showed her where she was heading if she continued down that road. I was sad that she gave up her first child but can see why she did it ...A real expression of love ..she wanted her son to feel safe and didnt want any more disruption for him. That must have been really tough for her especially for someone who had 15 foster homes during childhood. . I wish you all the love in the world Delena ...Youve been through so much and I pray you can see your potential. You are a courageous soul with so much to offer the world . I can't believe she pressed charges! If it were her real daughter I feel as though she wouldn't. Teens make mistakes and need caregivers who will make appropriate decisions upon disciplining them to protect them from themselves. The foster mom was way too dramatic. She should have had a teaspoon of real life experience but instead she got a full Bowl and ended up with the criminal record I don't believe that other parents would do this because it would set their child up for a very hard life. That just seems completely opposite of what your parents are there to teach you and to give you and to be part of. I no longer teach, but a customer talked about her mum & dad & that she’d been fostered. She’d moved in with them at 14 with a new baby. Then I saw them out somewhere with the children I knew. The customer talked about them so much I was really glad the 2 sisters had been placed in the family 😀. They’ve both stayed there, even though they are not classed as needing to be in care. Their parents don’t throw children out. They leave when it’s natural for them. If they move or stay until they’re 40.

I am so tired of hearing people get in trouble because of their childhood….it’s false, there is no reason other than just pure laziness and the unwillingness to do better. I felt bad for Josh’s mum. And the judge was basically putting it on her not the 13 year old who physically assaulted his mother to the point of making her bleed! & attempted to assault his sister with a deadly weapon! What if he did get her? Yet he doesn’t hit his step-father of course just the females?!
His mother did try her best. She got him counseling, he has seen doctors & has been put on medications, they even bought him a punching bag!! Yet the judge wanted to give not just him but the mum parenting classes for her other kids when they’re not the issue! Family counseling ok that would be different.
I don’t think it was right for the judge to say what she said about his mum. About her missing him & will want to work harder! He’s 13 not 5 and this isn’t the first time he’s acted like this, he has to learn that there’s consequences for his actions and that it’s not all about him! He’s not an only child! Mum has others to think about too!
Also it’s not uncommon for kids to idealize the parent that they don’t live with on a more permanent basis! That parent becomes the answer to all their problems when in reality that’s not always how it works out! In fact 8 out of 10 times it won’t.

She said she took Delina and her baby in because she wanted a family. But the moment Delina did the first thing wrong (and I'm not saying that didn't deserve SOME punishment), she legally stole her baby. So...I'm wondering if we even watched the same documentary! Joshua's case is heartbreaking...and hits close to home.
He wants to live with his dad so bad, he thinks by acting out, his mom will let him.
He doesn't understand, if his dad could or would, Joshua would already be there.
There is a reason his mom won't send him to his dad.
She might be protecting Joshua from a situation she knows is abusive, or his dad may not be able to financially afford to have him, he's addicted to a substance, etc.
His mom may be trying to be a good mom, by not telling him about his dad's true character. By not talking crap about the other parent.
By doing this though, it only makes the kid fantasize the other parent is perfect, and a way better living situation than the one he's in.
I'm not trying to assume, or say, Joshua's father is any of these things, but rather common reasons the other parent won't let their kid move in with them.
I was brought up since 2 yrs old with my mom and stepdad, who was very physically abusive and controlling.
They brought us up in the church, and were very strict, health nuts, and we did all the chores around the house.
My dad would pick us up on the weekends, but I remember it was sporadic.
We would be waiting on the porch for him to show up with our little bags and stuffed animals ready to go, and he wouldn't show.
When he did get us, it was a weekend full of everything we couldn't have, and didn't ever do, at my mom's. We would go to the beach all day, cooking out, swimming. We would have pizza and soda for dinner. Chips a Hoy cookies for dessert, and we could have as many as we wanted. He would take us to the mall, to the toy store, to get us anything we wanted, within reason.
My sister and I dreamed of moving in with my dad, to escape the abuse.
When my sister was 17, she got pregnant and got kicked out of my mom's, and my mom said I would never see my dad or sister again. She moved in with my dad, and he asked if I wanted to go too. I said yes immediately.
My mom's reaction was telling us we were both full of demons, and we were going straight to hell.
I didn't realize I had just bought a one way ticket, to hell itself!
Come to find out, my dad was an addict, did not care what we did, did not provide anything for us.
My sister moved out immediately and got married to her babie's daddy, and left me alone there.
I was 15, going from an extremely strict, and controlling environment, to an environment where I was able to do anything I wanted, with no repercussions.
I was so naive, and uneducated about the ways of the world.
I was 16, and had to find out everything about life on my own, with no direction from a parent of any kind.
It was horrific. But I managed, through the strength, courage, protection, love, and grace of God alone.
    Thank you, Jesus. 🌷😇🌷🙏🌷
I am so blessed I did not end up in the system. I could have, very easily, but God placed very special people, sometimes strangers even, in my path to help me along the way, until I became of age.
I graduated high school on time, I went to college, got my degree, and joined the Air Force, as a lab technician. I got married, and have 2 beautiful sons.
My oldest is now a Marine, stationed at the Embassy in Poland. My youngest is starting high school next year.
When I look at them, I could not imagine them leading the life I had.
I have done the best I can, to be the best parent for my boys. To show them what a secure, loving parental relationship looks like. To show them all the love and support I never received, from either of my parents.
It used to greive me, when I was young, to listen to other kids dog their parents out. I wanted to scream at them, "At least you have parents that care about you!! They are trying, so stop taking it for granted!"
It would hurt my heart so bad during the Christmas holidays, with no one to celebrate with, or receive gifts from.
Just being alone, while everyone around me had family and friends visiting and celebrating. To watch the kids come back from Xmas break, showing off all the new things they got for Xmas.
    But there is HOPE!!
Each one of us is in control of our destiny. Through the choices we make for our lives, and the strength and courage to make the changes necessary to better our lives.
To love ourselves, and believe we are worth the healthy love of others. 😇💗

As an ex foster child myself I can definitely relate to Dalena. I to was in over a dozen foster homes, shelters and then finally a girls lock up group home. The sad part was is I did NOTHING WRONG!!! I was severely abused in ALL ways possible and after the fist foster home which was beautiful, loving and amazing I lost it. I just didn’t understand because I did nothing wrong and they said they loved me and that was my home and since I was made a ware of the state I could stay with them forever. Then on day I’m at school and my case worker picked me up and took me for ice cream and said she had to move me the next day because the foster parents wanted her to. I couldn’t understand what happened. After that I’d run away and they find me and either take me back to the home I was in or I’d be moved somewhere else. I didn’t care because I promised myself I wouldn’t get close to anymore of these lying people again. It cost me many years of heartache. I didn’t drink or get into trouble with the law or anything like that, I didn’t even mess with the boys other than being friends. Finally they put me in a temporary home for thanksgiving in 1989 and well long story short I stayed there until I married my high school sweetheart at 19 years old. I’ve completed college, I have 2 grown children and 3 grandchildren. I’d say I did alright however, I give ALL honor and glory to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

And now she has a criminal record...no jobs prospects for 400 USD...really...the foster mom should have made her pay back the theft rather than take it to criminal court.

I don't understand why Joshua can't see his father. The mother would rather her son be removed from the home then contacting the dad in Texas. I wonder if the father even knew he had been given to the state?

This is a vicious cycle of kids with limited opportunity and full of frustration being punished as they should but reinforces their feelings of unworthiness.

A very sad story. I hope they all are doing well. But growing up in the system is not the solution.

I have to say that these judges made the best calls with what they had to work with in these cases. It was the parents that were either unwilling or unprepared to address the needs of their children where the failures occured. It was very insightful that the one judge saw that the girl was being over medicated and moved her to a facility that wouldn't have that option. It saddened me that Joshua's mom made statements on camera that she loved her son, but I never saw her say it to him when he needed to hear it. So glad that he is having a good life now. The teen Mom who is now an adult beat all the odds against her. Yes, she messed up badly once, she got knocked down. But she got up again and moved on with her life the best way she knew how. I hope both of her sons will one day realize what an amazingly strong woman their Mom is.

My God how someone can just give up their kids like that/// Joshua's story just broke my heart/// I am a mother of 3 sons, I just can not imagine just walking up to a place with my child and giving him away/// and the stupid step father that says to Joshua "Oh I don't get a hug", it was like the step father was gloating... Just so sad...

Aww, poor Chelsea. The system isn't built for someone with developmental disabilities, sadly.
