I've been picking up my oil paints for the first time in a long time. I tried painting my hair and it was a disaster. You're helping so much you have no idea!
Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent video. Keeping the principles simple and explaining why the techniques will mimic what we see is so helpful!
Thankyou. You were very clear and spoke slowly. You have to teach us as if we are children. A lot of these art shows are more about the teacher showing off their art rather than teaching. But you were very good.
LOVED THIS! I need to see how strong highlights on top of the brown -haired head from a light source can look more natural. You gave good general tips which I will try to use. I’m subscribed now!
you explained every step even which colours you mixed...i am glad i found your video, i couldnt find any other video explaining which colours they mixed. i had a very hard time in other videos but this video was great
Hi Estela, I can't remember since this was a few years ago, but often highlights undulate between warm and cool. There may have been some ultramarine blue for the cool and cad red with black for warm mixed in with the white.
Thanks so much Patricia! In this particular painting, I did the whole thing wet-into-wet in a 2 hour sitting. If it's a larger, more involved painting I would let it dry and probably oil-out with linseed on the next layer.
Ok so by now I was drawing like a portrait for my friend and she had like kinda brownish black hair exactly as urs and this was soooòoooooooooo helpful so yea thx
The amount of hair detail depends on the painting style. With Sargent, he often wouldn’t bother with suggestions of individual hairs at all - just a slightly lighter smudge of softness for the highlights and he’d be done.
What was that track playing at 4:34? ALSO you make an excellent point about putting the details in lighter region. Our eyes actually have rods (night vision) and cones (daytime color vision) . Turns out the cones are concentrated in the center of your retina, where light goes when you're focused on something. That's why your ability to see small things (better resolution) is better when there's more light. Your eyes will actually focus better when viewed off-center while looking at low light objects (like stars).
Hi there! All oil paintings must use some kind of primer, and this particular painting was done on a pre-primed panel. It was probably an acrylic based primer. I hope that helps!
This is by far the most informative tutorial I’ve been able fo find on this subject. By the way, I love how the painting came out!
Thank you so very much for these kind words! It means a lot to me and I am glad to be of help!
I was aiming to leave the same comment, but you have beaten me! 😊 Very clear and easy explanation!

This was very useful to me. Especially helpful was showing how you go back and forth on the highlighted areas, dark, light, dark.
So glad you found value in this, Gene!! Thanks for the feedback!
Really nice job with highlights. I will try this on my next portrait with black hair. Thank you for such a nice clear presentation.

Best tutorial by a country mile - thank you. Can you please relocate to the UK
Your approach is very good for illustrations. If you would like to progress to Fine Art then study how Leonardo painted hair.
Is there a difference if u use acrylic?
Nicely done...♡
What colors do you mix for the highlights?

Excellent video. Thanks very much for sharing. I'm presuming you let the first layer dry before applying mor paint. Patsy

I don't remember what track I used! Might have been from the free TH-cam series.
And thanks for the sciency explanation! Love it!
Great stuff, thank you :)
Beautiful job!! I really enjoyed the video. I think it would be helpful to slow your brush strokes down and close up so us beginners can copy you. 😉
