    I just came across your video, and got a slight chuckle out of the prices for stockers.

      Thanks! Some days I’m not sure that I love it, but the wife picked it all out, so all that matters is that she likes it!

    Really like seeing the cost breakdown and how you did raising the stockers , never really thought that a better quality mineral wouuld be so benificial at the end of the year ,i like the lower added feed costs , how large of a group did you allr put togather to sell ? what kind of premium price does a large group bring over groups of 10-15 head ? Keep the good videos , and glad you made some money this year ! coming !

      We had 103 head total, but they ended up selling in lots of 45, 50, and 8 because of weight differences. Those bigger lots will generally bring $10-15/cwt more than similar cattle in smaller groups, but there’s a lot of variables in there, of course. Thanks for watching!

    So does the timing not work out that you can't add your steers from your cow herd into the stocker herd? If you are doing that how are you differentiating the cost of those steers?
    Something that would be a good video for us longtime viewers is to do a breakdown of the size and layout of your farms and stocking rates and pasture rotation program. Including when you are running the stockers.
    As always appreciate the videos and podcast.

      We do add our home grown steers in. We purchased 53 head this year, but we had 65 total. We use the figures from just the ones we purchased to get the $972. We are making a bit of an assumption/estimation that our home grown ones are roughly the same size and would cost about the same to purchase. Of course, the reality is that we should be making significantly more on those few, but we want to look at it simply from the profitability of the stocker operation. good observation!

    Enjoyed the video! How much was the grass rent? Or if you own, what’s the going rate?

    • @HurricaneCreekFarms
      @HurricaneCreekFarms  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We own the pastures these boys graze on. We do rent just a little pasture that joins our home farm. Pasture rent is typically about $25-30/acre

    Do you run a breakeven before buying or selling calves? Also, why not push your gains from 1 lb/hd/day to 1.5-1.75 lb/hd/day. It could be worth pushing them a little more if you have healthier cattle. It doesn't have to be a high-cost ration, a cheap ration fed properly should help increase your ADG. Just curious what your thoughts are.

      It’s a thought, but our buyers like them green, so they wouldn’t bring quite as much per pound if we have been pushing the feed to them. We view ourselves as grass farmers. With the grass being our crop, we are simply using these calves as a way to market it, so we aren’t generally wanting to add extra costs with feed, even if it may pencil out. It’s something we definitely think about. In a normal year, we will slowly increase the feed late in the year as the grass gets short.

    What kinda of minerals and vacation are u using

      Biozyme stocker grower heat was the one I was referencing in this video. We feed it through the summer to those steers. We used bovi-shield, covexin-8, and Colorado serum Mannheimia/Pasturella. We go through a lot of those details in our video just after the steers arrived.
