A lovely light lyric tenor perfectly suited to the song. So many otherwise really good tenors attempt this part with a voice far too rich and dark for it. As you say, the high C's should sound sweet and easy - almost as though the singer is still in his tessitura. Big spinto sound (eg Pavarotti, Domingo, etc) is neither necessary nor desirable.

@@kenoliver8913 Indeed. And the crazy thing is that he sings *eleven* high C's -- the last one, where almost everyone holds out "militaire", he re-attacks it and sings "militaire.. et... mari" all on the C! No one else would dare, but he makes it sound easy...

Now it can be told. I did it. A few years from now I will invent a time machine. Being an opera fan. I traveled back to visit the Bel Canto period where I met Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. I encouraged all three to write parts too high for almost any living European tenor. But who will sing them? They asked. I explained that just when in the early 21st century as interest in opera was waning, suddenly East Asian tenors would emerge who have these high brilliant voices and revive public interest in their music. Audiences who expected the white tenors to transpose their music down or strain, would discover what it sounded like when done by singers who could handle the tessatura.
Rossini wept a little.
