Retirement in Texas comes with mild winters, low taxes and affordable housing. The second-most populous state in the United States is a retirement haven for retirees. The state of Texas has it all, whether you're looking for warmer weather, affordable housing or lower taxes, or engaging leisure activities. According to a recent U.S. News analysis of the 150 largest U.S. metropolitan areas as potential retirement spots, many cities in Texas have ample job opportunities for retirees looking to launch a second career and top doctors and hospitals that can help manage health conditions. An analysis of the study's findings included information on housing affordability and happiness, retiree taxes, the job market, and access to quality health care. A bonus for retirees: Texas doesn't have a state income tax.
Here are the best cities to retire in Texas.

Only one Problem in Texas … VERY HIGH PROPERTY TAX !!

And high insurance costs - because the whole thing might get blown away by a hurricane or tornado, or pounded to a pulp by softball-sized hail.

I don't know how, Dallas, Houston and Austin made this list of Best Cities in Texas to Retire. Those 3 specific cities are bit too much and not really affordable for a retired person on a fixed income.

Plus dangerous because they have liberals running them.

    • @robertcurry7860

@@billderby1527 hey, so very true. These liberals who probably voted for that corrupt politician joe biden and his awful, destruction of America agenda, also desire to turn Texas into a mostly Blue state and don't agree with the Republican-Conservatives living the Lone Star State.

True. Retiring in a big city offers high taxes, bad traffic, higher crime & higher cost of living. My plan was to move to the country when I retired but I got married & she has family all over the Dallas metro area so I'm stuck here & working again to pay property taxes at 66. It's a grind living here but my other option is divorce.

All very interesting but you forgot to mention the enormous traffic problems in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. None of the highway systems in these cities is adequate.

As a native Texan I wouldn't consider retiring to a big city. I get the need to be near a big hospital but i'd equally want predictability, peacefulness and no friggin traffic. Rusk, Munday, Henrietta, Olney. Would just be a just few of many considerations.

The only place that is affordable would be McAllen.

Stay away from the big City’s find a small town 30 to 60 miles outside the city’s to find an affordable place to live. Or move to the rural parts of Texas.

I'm from TX and hope to return soon for retirement. Yes, there are many attractive economic and social benefits if one is from a hi cost of living (COLA) state or a cold climate state. But before one moves there here are a few items to consider. Property tax can be significantly higher than in a hi COLA state for comparable housing. Higher utility cost running the AC about 8 months a yr, 24x7, due to constant hi-heat and humidity especially near the Gulf coast. Electric costs in winter can also be higher. These factors can offset no state income tax significantly. Heavy traffic, and long commutes in the top five metro cities. Lower salaries in some job fields. Mortgage & rent costs today appear understated in this video. Cultural norms or political factors are different i.e., your ain't in CA, MA or NYC anymore.

Why would retirees want to live in the big cities like Dallas, San Antonio or Houston? Does not make sense. It should be the medium sized cities like San Angelo, Lubbock or Abilene where the pace is slower.

The Corpus Christie region is booming economically due to the expansion of their deep water ports which has brought in industries that export most of their products. A good number of Snowbirds winter there since the area's average low temperatures are in the 50's at night.
I would stay away from Austin and DFW due to horrendous traffic and cost of housing. Small Town, East Texas has been attracting more out-of-state retirees due to the lower cost of land, housing, property taxes, new construction and remodeling plus large medical centers and shopping is available in Longview and Tyler.
East Texas also is the wettest part of the state so has plenty of lakes, rivers and aquifers full of water. We tend to receive rain on a regular basis while the rest of the state stays dry as a bone for months on end. Most of East Texas isn't part of the Texas Grid so has lower cost for electricity thanks to our numerous coal and gas fired power plants that churn out current 24/7.

$350k for a house in Austin. $1,200 rent would be for a one room studio.

Interesting, that $1,200 rent for a 1BD Studio Apt, sounds exactly like the amount someone who have to pay in expensive cost of living California.
