everything about this is quintessentially 80's. I love it.

Amazing that they ran these bodies in the mid-80s before the switch to the monte carlos in the Busch series. These bodies are essentially the ‘75-‘79 Nova body style. It’d be like seeing a 2010-ish body on the track in 2021!
That's what I was wondering, I thought this might've been a typo since Dale's Nova was a '77 Nova body on a Pontiac Ventura frame. That's impressive recycling a ten-year-old body and winning it.
That black with silver numbers looked awesome on the track.

Cool of Dale to mention had a good car as well. I thought their 2 cars were the class of the field that day. Can't imagine the fireworks at end if they had been on the same put strategy. Loved how Earnhardt told the real reason why they didn't change tires at the end....."really we didn't have tires to change, didn't have any new ones to put on" 😂
Earnhardt was truly the Darlington dominator. It's insane how many wins he had at that track.

The points system is terrible now and the stage bullshit is also a turnoff

Oh look Winston regulars in the busch series and no one cared.
It was kind of a sideshow then. But then promoters wanted the Cup guys more and more to get a few extra butts in the seats on Saturday. It got to the point that Cup guys dominated the series, instead of it being the AAA league of NASCAR.

Wow that's a blast from the past hearing those V6's buzzing around Darlington reminds me of the 1st race I attended when pre_cup Jeff Gordon was driving the Baby_Ruth car..
Its fun too watch these old races and see how slack the safety aspect was at that point in time...

I don't know how many of these Novas were built, but I did see one of them at The Mitty historics at Road Atlanta many years ago. I believe Gene Felton was driving.
David Coggins-I'm not sure how many were built into race cars,but Chevrolet made a ton of this body style of Nova from 1975 to 79.There was also a ton of Buick Apollo and Pontiac Phoenix cars built as well(GM's stablemates to the Nova).
They were really common. I was born in 1966 so I saw a lot of that body style as I grew up. The stock street cars were pretty awful like a lot of '70s cars (poor quality, gutless engines, terrible handling) but they were stout and easy to work on with plentiful parts, so I could see them making good race cars with a lot of work.

I forgot that Busch was running smaller cars and V6s in the late '80s. I kind of wish the Xfinity cars were more distinct from the Cup cars today to be honest, like this.
Damn Earnhardt was a real dude he was kind of like "now, don't take this ass whooping personally Geoff" he toyed around with him the whole race and just left the field behind after the last Pit Stop

The next season, Goodwrench would take over sponsorship of the #3 in Cup. I don't even think they'd announced that at this point. So you're correct in a sense that this is where it started.

Yes until 1989 the rules for the Busch series regarding cars were much more open.

It was born a Pontiac, Dale cut the nose off it and turned it to a nova, Dale obviously was a Chevy guy!!!
