Anyone who’s thinking about trying this: be careful, dandelions are safe but they can be made unsafe by the fertilizers or pesticides that have probably been used at some point on the land you’re getting them from
In early spring, the young crowns of dandelion can be gathered before leaves get 6" long or so (before flower buds form). These are much less bitter than older greens. They are famously made into salad with a hot bacon vinaigrette by Pennsylvania Dutch.
We ate them as greens as kids, but my favorite use of dandelions is dandelion wine! It's delicious and opening a bottle in the winter is like opening a bottle of summer sunshine.
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but: Please don't let your dogs eat garlic. It gives them renal failure. Also onions, chocolate, and raisins.
I have very low anemia, been taking vitamins but for some reason my body doesn’t really retain the iron. I looked up more natural iron sources and came across dandelions. Thank you for trying all these recipes or ways I can prepare them so I can try and see how my iron is in about a month. Again, thank you!
Me and my grandma used to go outside her back yard and pick the stems of them. She'd take them inside, cut a slit down the middle and fried them in a butterd pan. One of the best snacks I've ever eaten.❤️
Loved it, so creative, fun. And love your energy and everything was beautifully put together (editing, music) You get two thumbs up and 5/5, 10/10 for this
Free grocery store, yup. I just started foraging and have been all natural salads , teas, greens and salves. Amazingly natural lettuce, greens and herbs are so nutrient rich unlike store bought.
In Greece we gather them from the mountains when they are without flowers but we don't uproot them. Just use a knife to cut the fresh segment with the green leaves, they will grow back again later or in the next year, this way we don't destroy the plant. Then we clean the leaves from dirt or dried leaves and boil them in a lot of water (with or without salt). Then we eat them with extra virgin olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon, bread and maybe a side dish of fried potatoes. But my favorite is the water from the boiling, it's like a herb tea that we add salt and lemon. I could drink the whole thing in one evening, tons of it! Helps with keeping warm in winter nights and keeps you super hydrated in case you have cough or cold, some vitamin C from the lemon juice. It's considered a remedy.
I'm not gonna lie that can actually be true😂😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅 but there's a very small chance of will appear on their menu, but that is a good comment too bring up
I love the flowers caramelised or steeped in tea with lemon and honey, and the root to make a coffee substitute with adding come carob, also macerate the flowers with garlic in oil, great oil for food and a liver tonic.
We make dandelion fritters for summer parties. They're a delicious and unique bit of whimsy to bring to a gathering. This was a great find to expand our use of them!
Dandelions were originally brought over to North America by European settlers as a food source, actually :’) As far as I know, eating the leaves as “dandelion greens” is the most common consumption method nowadays!
I used to pick dandelions before they flowered with my great grandmother in the late seventies and eighties. If I remember correctly you are supposed to pick them before they flower, it stops them from tasting bitter. She would then boil them in a pot of water like you would greens. Also if I had a cold she would cut an onion in half and place it on a plate of sugar to draw out the onion juice and I would then drink it. I can't remember if it actually helped or not.

I remember when I was younger, I would harvest the bitter dandelion roots to put in my sister's soup. Sometimes I would add the bitter leaves to salads.
A multipurpose flower. Dandelion root can also be dug up from the ground, roasted and ground into a coffee substitute. This was an old Finnish trick when coffee was not available during the post-war shortage. I have never tasted this dandelion "coffee" myself, but according to what is written, it really tastes like a real coffee when roasted and brewed correctly.
