christian borle is 100% the best wonka, he adds a sense of crazy that is just so necessary for the character. it’s so sad that the set for the broadway version was so crappy , this show would have lasted so much longer if the team had worked just a little bit better
I love Christian Borle to death and think he was a great Wonka, but the Broadway set was absolute trash. Haven't seen the London version but just from this clip it already looks much more grandiose, as it should. And I also love Douglas Hodge from what I see here, his Wonka seems a lot more scary and slightly less charming than Christian's, which totally works.
I think the set was really clever, fitting the theme of the show it must be believed to be seen. Also it puts the (low) budget to the deaths, and better actors like Christian borle. But I respect your opinion
@@haydenpolsky995 because the sets weren't as big as the West end and they didn't have juicy (Violets death? Song), I'm sure there's more why people think it sucked but in my opinion I loved it and I liked the fact you had to use your imagination to view the sets a bit more.
I love all of them, they all did a wonderful job. My favourites for a long time were Christian Borle's version (because of the amazing chorus) and Douglas Hodge's (his voice is perfect for Willy Wonka, he can do both gentle and sinister). And then I saw the italian version with Christian Ginepro and WOW, I am sold, he's perfect in every aspect! And the choreography is spot on!
Honestly thank you for this compilation. This is probably the song, with the choreography, that really retains and continues to portray the magic of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from the books. I get chills just watching the different versions and reliving the childlike wonder.
What is your opinion of how in this version, three of the four children most likely die from their catastrophes(whereas the novel highlights how, and then shows later that, they survived), if I may ask?
For me, I absolute adore Alex Jennings' Willy Wonka, I just love the way he seems to ALWAYS be so ANGRY, especially when he does the *"Beyond these door is...CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!"*
I've just become obsessed with the musical and it's so fascinating to see all the different iterations. Thank you for hunting and putting these all together!!
Christian Borle and Noah weinsberg will always be my favorite for both physicality and vocal talent, but now that I've seen the Italian version, I do believe he is now top 3.
i'm insanely biased towards christian borle but the london version in 2013 was the first show i ever saw so i love them both equally yknow. but the harmonies added in the broadway version omggg
i love christian borle's wonka because he creates sort of a middle ground. most wonka actors either make him super crazy or just so charming and magical. no hate to any of the other wonkas, i love them all so much. i just feel that christian borle added some middle ground for me that i enjoy so much, i think js what throws everyone off abt his wonka is that the set was so sad.
I'm from the UK and went and saw the show in 2013 with Douglas Hodge and I've always thought he was the best ❤ wish I could see the musical again it was fantastic!
I wish that in all of these productions they kept the "Gold ticket Winners" line cause I thought it added to the song and The sets keep getting worse and worse by them just removing a flap and walking in- I mean the disappearing effects are probably expensive, but that part was really cool. And without the line and the screams there is just to much awkward silence-
If you watch the making of Broadway show, you’ll see in the recording how Christian Borle doing a crazy look in “Do come in!” and it’s absolutely fantastic 😩😩😩
oh god thanks for making this, seriously. this song is hard to find. I don't like the Broadway version nearly as much as the London, the Broadway one leaned so hard into the movie whereas the london show is much more standalone. but Christian Borle is pretty great lol there used to a clip of him doing this song on the View I think? but it got taken down. :/ I love the movement a lot, I think Douglas Hodge sings it better but Borle performs it better on stage.
@Greg Elchert That has very little to do with it. Most ticket buying tourists don't make that connection. It failed because it sucked and audiences stopped coming
As much as I love the West End show, I think the Broadway did this song better. They kept the mystery and creepy undertones but made it less so for Wonka, so it was less of a complete 360 in his personality between the ominous figure in It Must Be Believed to Be Seen to the whimsical fun character in Strike That, Reverse It.
Thoughts… Alex: Dude can’t sing for shit really, but it fits the character. And I kind of laughed when I heard the voice. Christian: Has it all…good energy, good singing voice, great expressiveness, and reminds me a bit of a gene wilder/Jonny Depp mashup of Wonkas. If the Broadway production was better (though to be fair the London version wasn’t all that great either) with a better set, than he could’ve gotten a Tony nomination. Though he’s much younger than most of the other Wonkas here, he does great. Douglas: Definitely getting the Jonny depp vibes from it. Great singer and actor, though not really a conventional musical theatre voice per se. Also had no idea he was in his 50’s at the time, looks younger than that. Others: good, but not really the best.
If you get the looks of Paul Slade Smith, mix it with the vocals of Douglas Hodge and finally sprinkle in the mannerisms of Alex Jennins then you'll have your perfect Wonka in my opinion 💜💛💜
So here is my opinion on the London versions that have been done Douglas - I do love his Wonka but he feels I bit to into the singing part and I know that it’s good but when he says seen for the final time I couldn’t really understand what word he said the first time I saw the trailer Alex - I LOVED HIS WONKA SO MUCH, he made Wonka feel so mysterious and how he sang his part in auf wiedersehen augustus gloop he made it feel like a comedy Jonathan - Now I did like his Wonka, but when he was singing IMBBTBS it felt a bit slow at some times and the fact he went from shouting to having a soft voice, I didn’t like it much
I think I like all the Wonkas. :) Except maybe for the Italian, didn't really feel the character there, it was lacking in charm - but then again that was a weird format for the performance anyway.
A thing I’ve noticed: the band on Wonka’s hat is blue on every actor except for Ginepro. The Italian production changed things up, but this seems so small
Christian Borle’s version will always be my favorite, as i also am just in love with Christian Borle but.. YALL CANT BE SLEEPING ON MY BOY PAUL SLADE SMITH. HE IS ALSO AMAZING. he shines the light on the sociopathic side of Wonka brilliantly. im sorry to the people who love the London Cast Recording, but i badly would’ve wanted to hear Paul Slade Smith on that recording, his voice is just perfect. As much as i LOVE Christian Borle, i think i can fully say it would be a 50/50 if i had to choose to see the show between Paul Slade Smith and Borle
Ok so I love Christian Borle and I feel like it would make it even better with a better set! I also love Douglas Hodge but I think that he shouldn't turn away from the melody so much, also I don't love the London costume/makeup as much as I loved the Broadway costume/set, but then again they probably focused on using their budget on their amazing (and frankly, superior) sets! I'd love to hear all of your opinions too!' (Also Derek Hagen is- what??? I can't explain him, he's.. not my cup of tea)
Okay I'm going to say something that sounds absolutely crazy... Douglas Hodge, although he doesn't do it for me for Wonka... I would love to see him play The phantom. His voice has a richness that I think would be fantastic for that part.

For me I think Alex did the best cause he crazy and childish like the book and he’s mysterious. Unlike the others they are more serious. But no hate on all wonkas they did great but Alex had the best wonka impression
I would love to see the GMA performance, the only video I have found of it cuts out halfway through the song. So it doesn't even make it to this half of the song
@@MrNonsenseSr I also have the Royal Variety Performance version from 2013.....It's quite different, different key and all, Douglas also sings it quite differently

do you have the 2013 instrumental with douglas hodge? because I have been looking for it for a very long time ...)
For me I think Alex did the best cause he crazy and childish like the book and he’s mysterious. Unlike the others they are more serious. But no hate on all wonkas they did great but Alex had the best wonka impression
charlie and the chocolate factory the musical have a version in brazil now could update the video
Soon the best, Brazilian version
I personally think that the key of E (Original West End and U.S. Tours) is much better than D (West End) and F (Broadway and Australia).

I would love to see the GMA performance, the only video I have found of it cuts out halfway through the song. So it doesn't even make it to this half of the song
Yea I’m not sure what happened to that video 🤷♂️ Oh well..
