Rarely is anything ever done outside of that except simple tasks like replacing memory from a donor computer or swapping out hard drives Just handing over a govt device to a third party individual with potentially classified or confidential information is such an inconceivably bad idea that the only possible reason I can imagine is that the device was either public/shared (like those computers you find at rest stops) and isn’t connected to the govt network, or some idiot broke his screen and was too embarrassed to tell anyone. Not sure how it is for federal government but I had to get an FBI background check, prints taken and all, and I have to do so every 5 years in order to keep my job as a tech

Our NIPR computers would never go to an non-contracted entity. For example all of our computers and tablets get fixed by Dell technicians. This tablet was probably from the VA or some other agency that operates within the Army. It’s got some AGM baseline image as the regular imaged NIPR computers have a green background, not a blue one.
Devices are wiped clean and sanitized before leaving any facility. It has the Army banner the green unclassified which means it has an army image. Not sure if the guy was next to you to login with his cac but this is still against opsec.

DoD System Admin here, the user should have brought up the equipment damage to their G6 and have an LCR done instead of bringing it to a local repair shop (great work btw) because the product is still under warranty with Microsoft and the army pays millions of dollars for these contracts. Replacing your government issued computer parts with non DISA approved items can possibly violate STIG and is most likely not legal anyways.

Tip on opening the Surface Pro. 1: Once you lift the glass with your suction cup, pour in a drop (or less) of 100% IPA into the adhesive under. This will make the adhesive brittle and very easy to separate. 2: Use a softer prying tool. I used the foil-plastic corner part of a blister pack of pills/capsules/medicine. Rigid enough to slice through the adhesive but soft enough not to break the glass. I also pour the drop of IPA through here as I slice through so that it gets to the tight/kiss part of the adhesive.
Being a DoD IT guy for over a decade I can tell you this. If an item was under warranty we sent issues like this back to the manufacturer. If they weren't under warranty, we'd remove the Hard Drive and essentially (auction) off the system to another government entity, typically school districts.
Not necessarily it’s easier to find one person if data is stolen rather than send it to Dell and possibly have something leaked and now all of Dell knows

They encrypt their local drives, actually. Certain stuff gets saved to the systems drive that can be restored so typically something like bit locker is used on the drive

You have to plug an encyrpted usb stick into the computer to unlock it. Or use a NFC ID badge. Or RFID or whatever the fuck which one they use. It’s one of them I’ve seen it before

1: Once you lift the glass with your suction cup, pour in a drop (or less) of 100% IPA into the adhesive under. This will make the adhesive brittle and very easy to separate.
2: Use a softer prying tool. I used the foil-plastic corner part of a blister pack of pills/capsules/medicine. Rigid enough to slice through the adhesive but soft enough not to break the glass. I also pour the drop of IPA through here as I slice through so that it gets to the tight/kiss part of the adhesive.

Being a DoD IT guy for over a decade I can tell you this. If an item was under warranty we sent issues like this back to the manufacturer. If they weren't under warranty, we'd remove the Hard Drive and essentially (auction) off the system to another government entity, typically school districts.

Never in my time as a state govt tech have I seen a device go to some random third party repair shop for obvious security reasons. You can’t log in to most govt devices unless you have somebody’s password, and again, for obvious reasons, this is a terrible idea. You can clearly see in the video that he is somehow logged in and you would only be able to do this if the computer was public/shared and off the domain

They encrypt their local drives, actually. Certain stuff gets saved to the systems drive that can be restored so typically something like bit locker is used on the drive
