Aqua still is one of my favorite GUIs. It brought a sense of alive-ness whenever a window would pop up and the blue button would have a subtle animation to grab your attention but not fully distract.
All I can say is wow. To say I'm an Apple geek is a massive understatement, yet I still learned things in this video. Let alone the additional knowledge, the presentation is beyond phenomenal. Your incredibly apparent hard work just got a subscription!
I've always loved the skeuomorphic icons as a kid. In fact, when iOS 7 was released in 2013 when I was like 6, I hated it! I hated the ugly flat icons, the lack of realistic-looking things, all of it. I wanted the "3D look" back so badly. Unfortunately, as a kid, I never got to go back to that era of iOS. When I bought an iPod touch 5th gen just a few months ago and downgraded it from iOS 9 to iOS 6, I was hit so hard with nostalgia. The icons. The textures. The smooth animations. The look and feel. The semi-transparent status bar. The lack of anything flat and boring. Everything. It took me back. Back to an era when I was just a kid and there was nothing to stress about... nothing to worry about... no problems with school (kinda)... no constant asking of me to do chores... I want to go back. Unfortunately, this, and a few other nostalgic items, are the closest I can get to going back to my childhood, the golden years of my life. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Have a nice day!
I kind of miss skeuomorphism sometimes. I found this video really fascinating because I never considered how making the apps look like their real world counterparts actually made them easier to understand from an outsider perspective. Sometimes it just looks so much more visually interesting than everything being flat. Unfortunately the modern world disagrees. That's why I'm hoping neumorphism starts to catch on and we start seeing some more interesting UIs.
Scott Forstall is an absolute legend in design. Steve, Scott and Jony were the dream team and Apple hasn’t been as interesting or innovative since they left.

The design of iOS 1-6 wowed me. It looked absolutely outstanding. It felt rich, premium, I could tell that someone worked painstakingly hard designing this, planning every tiny detail. You could feel the design, not just see it. Even the animations resonated with you and complimented the design. It was a privilege to use iOS 6. iOS 7 onwards was plain and amateurish. I don't think there's ever been such a massive drop in quality. It was like a downgrade from first class Titanic to third. The fact that iOS 7's terrible design has lasted so long is one of the reasons I've lost faith in humanity.
just binged "the proof is in the popsocket" and the two apple design videos and unironically I would watch you do an hour long deep dive into different UI/tech concepts and the history of it
This vedio inspired me to design my startup by myself rather than design it from another designer. So much thoughts are roaming in my head while writing this comment💥
I really loved the skeumorphism, it was the thing which set Apple apart from other brands. I still remember being mesmerised when I got my first Apple product, iPad 2 running iOS 5. Apple should include an option to use skeumorphic theme.
Quality insight. User Interface Design, (specifically on the iOS platform since 2007) has been my day job since 1999 and your apparent interest, appreciation and insight on this topic warms my heart. Thank you, keep at it!

WOW. Um ok, I searched up skeuomorphism because I had a deep thought about 12 minutes ago. I've now watched your entire video and you got me gagging for more. The whole layout was incredible, I used to love the old skeuomorphism of apple devices and I am so glad they're (kind of) bringing it back. You have got me subbed and waiting for part 2 my friend.

I personally am a fan of skeuomorphism and miss the old way iOS and other Apple software used to look, I have been less than pleased since the new flat design was introduced a long time ago at this point...but I must say, the new MacOS design is a perfect mix between the fresh look that was brought about with the flat design-sense and the skeuomorphic feel of the past. I absolutely love the new MacOS design and would be extremely delighted if they brought it to iOS/iPadOS next. For the first time in a while, I will feel the way I felt using their products once upon a time. The rest of the experience using Apple products is still there, but I've missed the tangible skeuomorphic feel while consuming the UI.

Not only is what you have to say richly researched and interesting, but your production value suggests you've got a dedicated team behind you (I'm guessing it's just you, though, and so hats off to an amazing job well done!). I sincerely believe that if you keep up with this you're sure to find additional viewers who will be as impressed as I am with your content. What a nice and interesting video! Please keep it up! When I finished watching I was shocked that you have only hundreds of subscribers with a video this good. Can't wait for the thousands that will find this video too!!
Apple design peaked in iOS 6. Beautiful, three dimensional icons, drawing inspiration from real life objects, resulting in sleek and varied designs. Game center wasn't confusing because of the styling, game center was confusing because it was practically useless. As someone who played games on iOS in those days, openfeint was using a completely different (still three dimensional) design and it was great. Today's apple icons could have been made by a child.
Interesting… now we have a whole gen of youths who miss this design style. Just the popularity that the term “Frutiger Aero” has gained online in recent years I believe shows it. It’s gonna be interesting in 10-20 years when we start seeing the new youth nostalgic for the flat, minimalist design people seem to dislike so much nowadays. Would that even happen?
When I first created Tux Paint in 2002, floppy disks' days were already numbered, so I created an icon of a book with an arrow pointing into it for "save", and one pointing out for "load". Also, Aqua was new and hot so, I ended up adopting a similar style for the entire UI. 20 years later it's extremely dated, but it still works... especially since it's ostensibly an app for young kids. Teens and twenty-somethings find it nostalgic and have yelled at me on Twitter to "never change!" :D
Wow! I feel so lucky to have discovered a channel! While you had fewer subscribers than I thought given the quality of this video, it feels great to be your 177th subscriber, excited for the future! And I agree with the last part where you say Forstall proved software design doesn’t have to be boring - too true with today’s apps and operating systems :( but I’m looking forward to this neomorphism despite still thinking the traditional free-form macOS icons are better since they are arguably the most beautiful and recognisable part of macOS.
The difference between the old skeuomorphic icons by Apple and there new ones is the old ones blended in with the os seamlessly while the new ones just stick out like a sore thumb alongside the other non skeuomorphic elements
I get why Apple switched from skeuomorphism, but I still believe that early iOS and Mac OS X look and feel better than the modern interfaces. I still use older iOS and OS X devices occasionally, and it's just such a composed, beautiful, and detail-oriented design language. Everything fits together in its own way, and it is all so incredibly detailed that basically no weird or broken interface elements can be found. In modern iOS and macOS (especially iOS), I run into glitches, bugs, and quirks with the UI fairly regularly, but old iOS/OS X never had that issue. I suppose that more constitutes the UX rather than UI, but UX and UI are intrinsically linked. Apple Skeuomorphism was getting repetitive and boring by 2013, and it had major issues, but once Apple switched, they lost the detail oriented focus that made the old UIs so beautiful and composed. Skeuomorphic design does have major issues, like this video pointed out, it becomes outdated, sometimes has very loose connections to real-world ideas, and is not good for showing things that have no IRL analog, but it was a time when Apple deeply cared about the tiniest of details, down to things like volume controls or small interface buttons. The UI had a character to it that screamed just how much time, care, and effort had been poured into making it as close to perfect as possible. Modern macOS is beginning to inch closer to a higher focus on details, but it still has a very long way to go, and iOS is even further.
I appreciate that Lickable is its own chapter. What do you make of the speculation that the new visual look is more accommodating of use in AR? Specifically, that the white background is to distinguish the icons from other real world elements and that the corners of windows are more rounded so as to seem less like a threatening sharp edge if viewed in AR.
Don’t stop man the algorithms are gonna find you!

Aqua was the perfect point because it was still abstract enough to not mean anything, but vivid enough to be beautiful
