You can just tell her level of maturity and understanding of what is expected from this career path by her perspective and explanation. There are so many sacrifices on varies levels (emotional, physical, spiritual) that we often don't touch on. The stress, curiosity of what could have been if one chose anything but medical, relationships, financial accountability, etc. I love how she was honest about her point of view during her premed years as being very "naive" and tunnel visioned. I admire her vulnerability, honesty, and commitment. She's fantastic.

Oh wow this is so cool! I am actually a First Year Medical Student at this same school! 😁 I am absolutely loving it so far. It was so cool to see a day in the life of a 4th year student!
Kevin Jubbal, M.D. I would absolutely be down for that 🙌🏻 it would be a ton of fun! Just let me know whenever you have an idea of when you would want to do it! 😁
Just from her comments, I knew EM would be her chosen specialty. I've noticed that the majority of the people who choose EM have other interests outside of medicine and they live really cool lives. Congrats to her. Very happy for her.
Fourth year military med student here, everything is the same as other medical students with the exception of some military away rotations during fourth year and office training usually the summer before med school or after your first year.
@@julieannetyler541 the only thing that makes it more challenging is using free summers to do military requirements such as officer training and specific military rotations which takes away from free time/research opportunities/etc. Other than that the match process gets complicated fourth year depending on what branch and what specialty you are applying to. But for the most part day to day life is the same.
Loved that honesty at the end. I agree there is a lot of naivety when going into medicine. Especially with first generation students and you don't truly understand the sacrifice and rigidity of the process until you are in it. Even looking at the match process and how you may not even have control over where you go etc. And yea there really are so many other avenues we all don't or didn't really know about. Great video! Would love to see the skating video :)
Hey Kevin, I'm an MS3 at TeAMS (US accredited international medical school in Israel). I would be interested in doing a "day in the life" if that's something which you would be interested in showing. I'm also married, have one child, & another on the way, so it might be interesting to show the work-life balance of medical school and family life.
Really great filming and production on this video. So interesting to see all the changes med students have to go through because of Covid. Props to them for getting through these challenging times in medicine. 👏🏼
Her advice is so helpful for people who are unsure about going into med school. I feel like first generation pre-meds don’t look into the other professions in medicine enough. Most of them think that getting the MD or DO is the only way to make an impact in medicine, which isn’t true at all.
I'd appreciate a video of the other avenues of Medicine she was mentioning in the video. Hopefully an in-depth vid would help us better understand what else lies besides being a doctor and the impact it makes.
No one ever talks about the sacrifices that come with pursuing a medical profession. Relationships, time, friendships, stress plus the countless amount of hours spent studying. It's rewarding but extremely costly.
@@internetstranger3686 Yeah and that's completely understandable, I lost a long term relationship several friends and lots of fun experiences I would of loved to take part in but med school always came first, also to be far most people start med school right after college and your still not great at managing your schedule by then, I started MS when I was 24 and was arrogant and thought I would have time for everything no matter what med school would throw at me, I was wrong. Lol
@@Sonny1065LV I lost a 6 yr relationship in the pursuit of med school because I was more focused on getting in than him. It sucks and we are still friends but it hurts like a MF. The theme this yr has been "everyone just leaves". I've come to accept it. Medicine will always be there. So now I've doubled down to succeed to make all those sacrifices worth it.
@@kaitlynkilpatrick36 Seems like it just ends up coming with the territory, considering how much time we put into the profession I can understand how being with someone who doesn't quite understand can be difficult. Either way staying positive and helping people in the end is what we were meant to do, wishing you all the best on your journey and hope to have the pleasure of working with you one day 😀
Could you make a video discussing the other options she mentions? I think many of us turn to this channel because we love healthcare, but we need to know what else is out there besides being a physician.
you know it's a real 4th year cuz she left her rotation to go to gym, then worked on her app, then went to her friend's house and it still wasn't dinner time yet
The American system of medical training is really good for allowing that kind of schedule. Here in Belgium, when you're on your last year of med school, there is just no time for anything but your rotations. You usually finish around 6 p.m. if not later, and finding time for studying and doing your daily tasks is a struggle.
Her perspective on the medicine career path was really interesting, and I completely agree. In general, there is not enough exposure and guidance to the other healthcare careers. Even in medical school, unless you go to a top school, I don't think there's enough exposure to pathways into entrepreneurship, biotech, and admin leadership!
This is why I decided to become a nurse instead. Its still very rewarding and you make an impact, but its a much more reasonable career to get into, the work-life balance is great, and it pays well. You have to be VERY passionate and dedicated to become a doctor, and be willing to accept what you will be giving up when you choose that path
Love these vids. Been trying to pick a specialty and your Day in the Life vids help a lot. If you ever need a Texas MS1 perspective, let me know! Texas A&M Medical School here.
Few simple revision tips for new medical students:👇 Break up study schedules into 20 to 30 minute segments. Create a study timetable. Keep hardest topics for the morning. Create colorful notes and mind maps. Practice old exams and papers. Start assignments sooner rather than later. Get plenty of sleep.
Hello!! Are there any effective plastic surgery resources you’d suggest (blogs, youtubers, educational websites, etc). I’m an M1 and I’m interested in learning more about plastics. Thanks!!
Hi! I'm an OMS4 as well and have a lot of interests and things I do outside of medical school and would love to be part of this series and show people you can pursue your passions while being in medical school as well!
You can go other paths make impact on medical but you may have to be in lower tiers in that field. I’m working for a pharmaceutical company they are really into MDs not even PHDs
Is there any major in masters program that relates to emergency medicine ? Can a paramedic student enter that field directly ? Or he has to start over?
all doctors are “pill pushers”? Do me a favor, next time you’re having a heart attack, stroke, are in a car accident, or notice some sort of mass, just forego the doctor and see how well it pans out for you. Thanks for contributing to natural selection
Clifford Taylor Heart disease kills about 1 in 4. Vegans have about a 22% lower chance (this was only an observational study, but it’s the best we have); therefore, there’s still just under a 1 in 4 chance you’ll die from it (.25*.88) (not to mention all the other things I said). Also, vegans have an elevated risk of stroke (again, only observational, but still). You’re acting like veganism cuts your risk to near-0, but that’s far from the truth. Well, to be honest, I never expected someone like you to actually be informed of the health risks vegans still have.
