    Welcome back! Our sincerest apologies for being away for the last couple of months, however we're back for a long while. Our next installment in our Houdini tutorial series is this rain tutorial which was promised a while back. We go over popnet streams, collision behaviours and groups as well as how to construct a wetmap for the rain system.
    This was suggested by 'Carte Blanche Channel' and 'Silks'. Thanks for the suggestion and if anyone else has any suggestions, please drop a comment and we'll take it into consideration.
    As mentioned in the tutorial, we used a setup inspired by Ben Watts for our wetmap and that can be found here:

    Hey everyone, we're back! We're immensely sorry for the long wait but we thank you for your continued patience and support! We're going to be releasing a lot of what we've been working on in the weeks to come. We already have Rubiks Cube, Lightning, Geo affector, Symbiote and Particle advection tutorials in the works. Stay tuned and be sure to make suggestions for future videos below. Enjoy!

    if your "run" group is not working properly, go into the popsolver and under collision behavior change "response" from die to "unchanged". I have no idea why this was set to die by default but it took me two hours of trying to tweak every single thing and this is what solved the issue.

      You're welcome! OK, if I have the line open on weather effects... :p Ever since SideFX released their terrain tools I've been looking for a way to properly add snow accumulation on geometry, controlled by a few parameters such as wind direction and accumulation amount. The covered surface should become thick and smooth , something like: c1.staticflickr.com/9/8678/30312998692_6ec72d176f_b.jpg but i bet this could be useful for adding snow on smaller objects like a loghouse model, too. Anyway, since you asked :-)

      1:17 of this video is a good example, too, vimeo.com/244305098

    • @NineBetween
      @NineBetween  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that seems super interesting! I haven't done much work with terrain in Houdini so I can't say for certain how much could be done with the terrain tools alone. As for the video that you sent, it could probably be done with a grain solver and a VDB convert on the static parts of it so that it acts more like a solid once its at rest. I'd like to mess around with a snow system after seeing that. I'll get back to you on that one :)

    A simple question regarding wet maps, when i created the point cloud, i tried an alternative, instead of using the point cloud from both inputs 1 & 2 and adding them together, i used the point cloud from input 2 (the rain) and i used a bind VOP instead and imported the wet attribute and added it to the attribute from the rain, it almost got me the same result (99%). Why use 2 point clouds, can u explain this to me?

    Hey nice tutorial !! i m wondering how to finish this on Houdini ? i mean i rendered on C4d with alembic & wetmap and it works perectly. But i would render on houdini/Vray. The things is I would use the black and white wetmap as mask to apply 2 differents shaders. Do you have any way to do this ? Sounds pretty easy but i did find the solution yet ! thank you so much anyway for your really nice tutorial.

However I am doing it in Cinema4D, so could I combine these somehow?

    This is so cool! Thank you for those explanations! Now I was thinking... If would use a wet map like this for a vellum simulation, there would be any way to associate this to make the wet areas to stick more to a collision surface? Maybe if I could use those maps to trigger a glue constraint or to associate them with the friction?

    • @NineBetween

    Is there a way to write a out a wet texture map to be used in other softwares such as Maya???

    • @NineBetween
      @NineBetween  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I may be mistaken, but I think you may achieve better results by using a custom attribute in Maya and using it to drive your shader in Arnold. Otherwise, the best way to export the wetmap as a texture map would be to use the Bake Texture ROP. There should be decent online resources for baking a texture map in Houdini, perhaps on ODForce forums. Hope this helps!

    • @NineBetween
      @NineBetween  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! I'd recommend taking a look at vellum hair simulation. You could use a glue constraint that causes strands to stick together in clumps. You could drive the glue strength by a wetness attribute so that dry hair tends to separate whilst wet hair pulls together. It's tricky to give you specifics without knowing the details of your project, but hopefully, that points you in the right direction😁

      Hi Amos,
      The background is an HDRI. It's basically an environment image that also acts as a light source. If you render it out (with a bit of post processing such as depth of field blur and glow) you end up with the background in the video. You can download HDRIs from a place like hdrihaven.com

    Edit: If you're having the same problem:
    - put an Dop IO Node (In "Dop Network" put your Popnet node and in "DOP Node" put "../popnet/popobject/)
    - Uncheck "import simulation settings"
    - Add a field and put "Geometry" (No change in visualization)
    Just cache and the VDB part will work.
